Five wrestlers win state titles
Woodland wrestlers captured three state championships and Cass collected two at the 2018 GHSA Traditional State Wrestling Championships at the Macon Centreplex Thursday through Saturday.
Wildcats' 160-pounder Cody Cochran capped off his senior season with a third state title. He had one pin and two technical fall victories prior to his 10-6 win in the finals.
Junior Kyle Gollhofer (120-pounds) also won his third state championship pinning three of four opponents. Gollhofer did not lose a match this season.
Woodland’s third state winner was freshman Caden McCrary (113-pounds).
Cass seniors Tripp Breeden (220-pounds) and Seven Richards (285-pounds) won their second-straight titles. Breeden pinned three of his four opponents. Richards pinned all four of his opponents, three in 50 seconds or less.
In the team competition, Cass was fourth and Woodland fifth. Buford won Class AAAAA followed by Union Grove and Ola.
Adairsville finished 12th in Class AAA. Cartersville was 29th in Class AAAA.
Class AAA was won by Sonoraville who finished just ahead of Bremen and North Hall. The title is a first for Sonoraville.
Jefferson won Class AAAA ahead of West Laurens and Troup County. The title is the 18th straight for Jefferson wrestling.
Other local state individual placers included Adairsville’s Nic Jackson with a state runner-up finish in the 170-pound division. Angel Banda (106) and Bryce Burgess (182) also placed third in Class AAA for the Tigers.
Cartersville wrestler Jonathan De La Cruz (182) finished fourth in Class AAAA as did Woodland’s Caleb Jones (126) in Class AAAAA.
Cass had four additional state placers. Tyler Pilcher (132) and Kendall Arnold (145) finished third. Rett Moore (170) was fourth and Ben Mills (126) placed fifth in Class AAAAA.
