Updates this week for local athletes competing at the collegiate level in basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball, tennis, and golf.

 

BASKETBALL


RYAN DAVIS — Francis Marion University (Jr., G, Cartersville HS)… scored 16 points with four rebounds, three assists, and one steal in a 71-69 win last Wednesday at Lander University. He then scored 12 points with five rebounds, five assists, and four steals in a 90-54 home blowout over University of North Georgia. FMU (15-7, 10-7 Peach Belt Conference) hosts Young Harris College Monday and Augusta University Wednesday before traveling to Flagler College Saturday. All three are conference games.


KIMORA McCLINIC — Middle Georgia State University (Fr., G, Cartersville HS)… scored five points with four rebounds in a 56-55 home loss to Brenau University last Monday. She then scored two points and grabbed five rebounds last Thursday in a 78-62 home win over Brewton-Parker College. MGSU (6-17, 3-10 Southern States Athletic Conference) plays at Bethel (TN) University Thursday and at Martin Methodist (TN) on Saturday.


JANA MORNING — Berry College (Fr., G, Cass HS)… started and totaled 14 points with four rebounds, one assist, and seven steals in losses at Centre College (KY) and Sewanee University (TN) Friday and Sunday. The Vikings (10-13, 5-8 Southern Athletic Association) wrap up the regular season this week at home against Wesleyan Tuesday and Oglethorpe University Saturday. The SAA Tournament is the following week.


A.J. MOSBY — Alcorn State Universitiy (Sr., G, Cartersville HS)… scored 28 points in an 81-72 loss at Grambling State last Monday and scored 22 more in a home 94-90 overtime win over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday. Mosby added 11 rebounds, 13 assists, one block, and four steals in the two games. ASU (8-17, 4-8 Southwestern Athletic Conference) hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff Monday night and travels to Alabama A&M on Saturday. Mosby leads the SWAC in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.3-1, and is averaging team highs in points (14.3), assists (3.6), steals (1.4), 3-point percentage (40.5) and minutes played (31.2) per game. He also is second on the team with 4.7 rebounds per game. Mosby is eighth in the SWAC in points per game, third in assists per game, fourth in field goal percentage (49.4), 17th in rebounds, sixth in steals per game and third in 3-point percentage. Alcorn State is 8-17 overall and 4-8 in conference play with six games remaining and the team sitting in eighth place.


GREG MURPHY — Young Harris College (Jr., F, Woodland HS)… played five minutes and grabbed two rebounds in a 98-77 home win over North Georgia on Feb. 7. He then played seven minutes and went 2-of-4 from the field for four points with two rebounds and a block in a 70-61 loss at UNC Pembroke. YHC (7-16, 6-11 Peach Belt Conference) plays road conference games this week at Francis Marion Monday, Lander Thursday, and Columbus State on Saturday.


JONATHAN PRITCHETT — Vermont Tech (Fr., G, Woodland HS)… In one game last week, Pritchett played 19 minutes off the bench, scoring five points with two steals, a rebound and an assist in a 71-68 road loss at Southern Maine Community College. Vermont Tech (16-10, 11-5 Yankee Small College Conference) host College of St. Joseph Tuesday.


ELIJAH ROBINSON — Emmanuel College (Sr., F, Excel Christian Acad.)… had a double-double Saturday with 10 rebounds and 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting in 25 minutes in a 64-57 road win over Limestone. He added two blocks and an assist. In 11 games, Robinson is second on the team in points (14), rebounds (7.3) and blocks (1.2) per game while shooting 48 percent from the field in 26.8 minutes per game. The Lions (14-9, 8-5 Conference Carolinas) plays at Mount Olive Wednesday and hosts Southern Wesleyan Saturday.


DARIUS THROWER— Truett-McConnell University (Soph., G, Excel Christian Acad.)… scored three points in each of Truett-McConnell’s two games last week, the first in a 75-72 home win over Allen on Feb. 7, and the second in Saturday’s 91-73 road win over Columbia International. TMU (18-10, 10-8 Appalachian Athletic Conference) travels to Reinhardt Wednesday and entertains Bluefield College (VA) Saturday.


COREY TOBIN — Reinhardt University (Sr., G, Cartersville HS)…Tobin had a rough shooting night in a loss against Tennessee Wesleyan Feb. 7, scoring just five points, but adding 10 rebounds and two assists. His shooting then bounced back in Saturday’s 92-83 home win over St. Andrews, scoring 18 points. He also threatened a triple double with eight assists and seven rebounds. Reinhardt is fifth in the Appalachian Athletic Conference with a 10-8 conference record and two games remaining. Tobin is third on the team in scoring, averaging 11.8 points per game. He also is putting up 5.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists per outing. The Eagles host Truett-McConnell University Wednesday and close out the regular season Saturday at Montreat College (NC).


CARROD WATSON — University of North Georgia (Soph., F, Woodland HS)… North Georgia dropped three games last week by at least 22 points. Watson could do little to help, but did have a strong performance in one of the losses. He scored 10 points in just nine minutes on Feb. 7 against Young Harris, adding a rebound and a block. On Saturday, he scored three points in 12 minutes with three rebounds and an assist, and added a rebound and a block Sunday against UNC Pembroke. UNG (10-14, 8-10 Peach Belt Conference) hosts Clayton State Wednesday and plays at Georgia College Saturday.


RUDY WINTERS — Columbus State University (Jr., G, Excel Christian Acad.)… scored nine points with three rebounds in a 95-78 home loss to Georgia Southwestern on Feb. 7. He then scored 15 points and had 11 rebounds in just 16 minutes, while putting up 15 field goal attempts, in an 86-76 road loss at Lander on Satuday. For the season, Winters is averaging 12.4 points and 4.7 rebounds in 25.2 minutes per game. Columbus State currently sits tenth in the 12-team Peach Belt Conferce with a 6-11 record, but is just four games back of third place with five games left to play in the regular season. The Cougars play at USC-Aiken Monday night, at Georgia College Wednesday, and host Young Harris College Saturday.




WRESTLING


EVAN COLE — Cumberland University (Sr., Cartersville HS)… won his lone match last week, a 10-2 major decision in the 149-pound weight class over Brewton-Parker’s Benghali Touray on Friday. Cumberland won the dual 28-17 to improve to 3-9 on the year and 1-5 in the Mid-South Conference. Cole is now 5-9 on the year. The Phoenix travel to the Mid-South Conference Championships Saturday in Bowling Green, KY.




BASEBALL


GRAYSON BAGWELL — LaGrange College (Fr., RHP, Woodland HS)… struck out one and walked one in a one inning relief appearance last Tuesday as the NCAA D3 10th-ranked Panthers blanked visiting Emory, 8-0. LaGrange (5-2) hosts Berry Tuesday before traveling to Jackson, MS to play in the Millsaps College Tournament. Friday through Sunday.


BAILEY CAMPBELL — Young Harris College (Fr., 1B, Cass HS)… made his first college hit memorable with a solo shot to right field that gave the Mountain Lions a 3-1 lead in the third inning of a 5-4 win last week over visiting Shorter. YHC (2-4) plays at Lee University Tuesday and will host Lander University this weekend in a three-game series to open Peach Belt Conference play.


NOAH DANIEL — Reinhardt University (Fr., OF, Cartersville HS)… made a sixth inning, pinch hit appearance Friday but popped out in foul territory in the Eagles’ 8-5 win over visiting Saint Francis (IN). Reinhardt (2-3) hosts Faulkner University (AL) Wednesday and a three-game series with Huntington University (IN) this weekend.


BRANDON ETHERIDGE — Limestone College (Sr., OF/P, Cass HS)… the Saints’ every day centerfielder made a one-inning relief appearance Friday at home in an 11-10 loss to Merrimack College. He was also 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in the game. In the first game of the doubleheader, Etheridge was 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored raising his season batting average to .353 through six games. Limestone (4-2) hosts Mars Hill Tuesday, plays at Lenoir-Rhyne Wednesday, and will host the Limestone Classic Friday through Sunday with doubleheaders against Gannon University and LIU Post.


LANE GRIFFITH — University of West Georgia (Jr., C, Adairsville HS)… started behind the plate Friday in the second game of a doubleheader with West Alabama that was a 4-1 win for the Wolves and completed a three-game series sweep. Griffith walked once and came around to score. He was also hit by a pitch. UWG (7-0) plays at Georgia College Wednesday before hosting a three-game series with Albany State over the weekend.


HARRISON OSBORN — Point University (Fr., RHP, Cartersville HS)… recorded the final two outs on the mound Friday for the Skyhawks in a 4-1 loss to visiting Talladega (AL). Osborn allowed a hit, a pair of inherited runners to score, and hit one batter in his appearance. Point (1-4) hosts a doubleheader with Clark Atlanta University Tuesday and a three-game series with Toccoa Falls College Friday and Saturday.


SAM SEAMAN — Gordon State CC (Fr., Inf., Adairsville HS)… started at second base last Monday in a 3-1 loss to visiting LaGrange College JV. He went 0-for-3 at the plate but recorded an assist and a putout in the field in two defensive chances. The Highlanders (3-4) play at LaGrange College JV Wednesday and will play four games Thursday through Saturday in Marianna, FL against Chipola CC (DH), Wallace State CC, and Columbia State CC.


TYLER WASHINGTON — Young Harris College (Sr., OF, Adairsville HS)… started all three games but went hitless as the Mountain Lions won two of three against visiting Shorter University Thursday and Friday. YHC (2-4) plays at Lee University Tuesday and will host Lander University this weekend in a three-game series to open Peach Belt Conference play.





SOFTBALL


SIERRAH GANI — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., OF, Cass HS)… went 2-for-3 with a double, run scored, and a stolen base in a 2-1 home win over Harford CC last Thursday in the first game of a doubleheader. She then walked twice and scored a run in the second game, a 10-4 win. Gani added one hit in a 4-1 loss to Southern Union State CC and walked and scored a run in a 4-1 win over Cleveland State CC Friday. GHC (8-4) plays a doubleheader at Southern Union State CC Tuesday and will play five games at the Coastal Alabama CC Sun Chief Classic Friday and Saturday in Gulf Shores, AL.


BRITTANY HUTH — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., Inf., Cartersville HS)…

scored a run in a 10-4 home win last Thursday over Enterprise State CC. GHC (8-4) plays a doubleheader at Southern Union State CC Tuesday and will play five games at the Coastal Alabama CC Sun Chief Classic Friday and Saturday in Gulf Shores, AL.


KAILAH RAIN — Embry-Riddle University (Sr., OF, Cartersville HS)…went 2-for-10 with one RBI on a sacrifice fly as the Eagles defeated West Alabama, but lost to University of North Georgia and Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL. Despite the stretch, Rain is batting .375 as the starting right fielder hitting in the two-hole of the order. ERU (3-2) starts Sunshine State Conference play this Friday and Saturday with a three-game series in St. Petersburg, FL against Eckerd College.


TAYLOR WAITS — Brewton-Parker College (Soph., OF, Cartersville HS)… went 2-for-3, scored a run, and drove in one in a 7-6 loss at Truett McConnell University last Tuesday. It was Waits’ first start in two game appearances. The Lady Barons (1-3) travel to Coastal Georgia College Thursday for a doubleheader.


ANNALYN YANTIS — Samford University (Jr., P, Cartersville HS)… worked 10.2 innings across four games for the Bulldogs last Thursday through Saturday in team losses to Illinois-Chicago, Evansville, Eastern Illinois, and the hosts Louisiana-Lafayette. Yantis is 0-2 with a 7.88 ERA and eight strikeouts. Samford (0-4) plays at Jacksonville State Wednesday before traveling to the University of Georgia for the Red and Black Tournament Friday through Sunday where they will play Georgia twice, Wintrop twice, and Evansville once.




TENNIS


PEYTON GOLLHOFER — Ball State University (Jr., Cartersville, GA; Laurel Springs Acad.)… won a three-set thriller Saturday over Jalena Vujanic at Line 2 singles and paired with Lilya Hadab for a 6-4 win at Line 2 doubles as the Cardinals defeated visiting Valparaiso, 6-1. BSU (4-2) hosts Illinois-Chicago Friday and Western Kentucky Sunday.




TRACK AND FIELD


ANNA HIGHTOWER — Georgia Tech (Jr., Cartersville HS)… competed Saturday in the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational but failed to clear 11’ 11.75” in her initial attempts. The Yellow Jackets return to Clemson for the ACC Indoor Championships February 22-24.


SAMANTHA PATTERSON — Jacksonville State University (Sr., Woodland HS)… won the College-Platinum division of the Dunamis Super Meet Thursday at LakePoint in Emerson with a best jump of 10’-11.75” (3.35m). Next for JSU is the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championships February 23-24 in Charleston, IL.




GOLF


MAGGIE ASHMORE — Augusta University (Sr., Kingston, GA; Heritage Golf Acad.)… shot an opening round 81 Sunday and followed with a 78 Monday at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic on the Ocean Course at Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, PR. She sits fourth best for the Jaguars who are 8th of 11 teams in the tournament that continues through Tuesday. 4th-ranked Arkansas is the leader through two rounds, five shots ahead of 26th-ranked Iowa State and eight shots ahead of 22nd-ranked Kent State.


HANNAH MAE DEEMS — Mercer University (Sr., Taylorsville, GA; Darlington HS)… shot a 1-under-par 71 Saturday to tie for 7th individually in the 37-player Reynolds Lake Oconee Great Waters Individual Collegiate. The Bears play next at the University of Miami Hurricane Invitational March 5-7.
