Chargers sweep Saturday doubleheader
The Georgia Highlands College baseball team swept a home, conference doubleheader with West Georgia Tech Saturday at LakePoint in Emerson to win this week’s four-game series with the Golden Knights three games to one.
West Georgia Tech won the series opener Tuesday in Carrollton, but the Chargers took the final three games at LakePoint with a 13-12 win Friday night and Saturday’s 4-1 and 5-1 sweep.
In Saturday’s opener, Drew Wilson tossed a complete game two hitter to control the Knights’ bats while four different Chargers drove in one run each. GHC led 1-0 after two innings and scored three times in the fifth for a 4-0 advantage. The lone WGTCC run was scored in the sixth.
Austin Foster and Cameron Hearn had RBI singles for the Chargers. Nick Piccapietra doubled home a run and Skylar McPhee drove in a run with a groundout.
In the second game Saturday, Tyler Sellers tossed a complete game four hitter for the Chargers. The lone run against him was unearned.
All the runs of Game 2 were scored in the third inning.
West Georgia Tech (10-19, 1-8) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the frame before Piccapietra tied the game in the bottom of the third with a line drive RBI single. Hearn followed with a three-run homer and Parker Orr added a solo blast as the Chargers took a 5-1 lead.
With the their third straight conference win, Georgia Highlands (20-8, 6-3) moves into second place in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. The Chargers are one-half game ahead of South Georgia and trail conference leading East Georgia by two games.
