Cass soccer teams close in on playoff berths


The Cass girls and boys soccer teams both picked up important Region 7-AAAAA victories Friday night over Villa Rica moving both teams closer to potential state playoff berths.

 

CASS GIRLS 4, VILLA RICA 1


The Cass girls soccer team moved a step closer to securing a Class 5A state playoff berth Friday night with a 4-1 Region 7-AAAAA win at home over Villa Rica.


Villa Rica carried a 1-0 lead to the locker room at halftime Friday night, but the Cass girls got four goals from Logan Vermaas in the second half for their victory.


The first goal for Vermaas tied the game about one minute into the second half off a feed from Briana Ochoa. Ochoa would assist on two more goals and the final assist was from Jaden Musacchio.


Cass (6-7, 4-2) has now won four straight and has two region games remaining at home next week against Hiram Wednesday and Kell Friday.





CASS BOYS 4, VILLA RICA 3


Cass and Villa Rica played regulation and overtime Friday night in a game that was ultimately decided by penalty kicks.


The two teams matched first half goals for a 2-2 tie at the intermission, then each scored a second half goal to send the game into overtime tied 3-3.


Neither team scored in the two, five-minute overtime periods sending the game to a shootout finale’.


Anthony Robledo, Julio Medina, Jonathan Tong, and Josh Flores all converted their penalty kicks to secure the Colonels’ 4-3 win.


Villa Rica scored two goals early in the first half before Cass tied the game at the intermission on goals by Carlos Perez and Slomi Orozco. Medina assisted on both plays.


The Colonels took a second half lead, 3-2, on a Felipe Albarran goal off an assist from Robledo but Villa Rica tied the game with about 20 minutes remaining in regulation.


Cass keeper Isai Romero had nine saves in regulation plus the big stop in the shootout.


Villa Rica is now 7-5-1 overall and 3-3 in Region 7-AAAAA.


Cass (5-7, 4-2) has won four straight and is currently third in the region playoff chase with home games remaining against Hiram Wednesday and Kell on Friday.
