Athletes Beyond Bartow: College softball, golf, tennis, track & field updates


Updates for local athletes competing for their respective college programs in softball, golf, tennis, and track & field for the week ending Sunday, March 25. NOTE: The baseball update was published in a separate article this week. NOTE: Nicholas Sullivan, The Daily Tribune News, contributed to this report.

 

SOFTBALL

CASSIDY HOWREN — Reinhardt University (Jr., C, Adairsville HS)… went 1-for-4 with a run scored in a doubleheader sweep of Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Tennessee Wesleyan on Thursday. Reinhardt (15-17, 5-3) hosts Truett-McConnell University Tuesday afternoon and travels to Allen (SC) University Saturday for a conference doubleheader.


SYDNEY HODORFF — LaGrange College (Jr., C, Woodland HS)… had two hits and an RBI in 13 plate appearances across four games this past week. LaGrange (12-16, 8-4) plays a doubleheader at Agnes Scott Wednesday.


HANNAH KNAPP — Coastal Alabama CC (Soph., C, Adairsville HS)… saw action in three games this past week, finishing 2-for-7 with two runs scored and two RBIs. CACC (13-23, 7-2) hosts Chattahoochee Valley CC Tuesday and plays at Wallace-Dothan CC Thursday.

KAILAH RAIN — Embry-Riddle University (Sr., OF, Cartersville HS)… went 5-for-18 with five runs scored and two RBIs in five games, as Embry-Riddle posted a 3-2 record on the week. The Eagles (25-8, 13-5) travel to West Palm Beach for a three-game Sunshine State Conference series Thursday and Friday.


ANNALYN YANTIS — Samford University (Jr., P, Cartersville HS)… needed just seven pitches to record her first save of the season in Samford's 2-1 win over East Tennessee State University. She entered with the bases loaded and one out. She coaxed a flyball that led to a runner being thrown out at home to secure the win, which evened the Bulldogs' SoCon record at 1-1. Samford (10-24, 1-1) hosts Chattanooga Friday and Saturday in a three-game series.



GOLF


HANNAH MAE DEEMS — Mercer University (Sr., Taylorsville, GA, Darlington HS)… finished in a tie for 25th at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic over the weekend. She shot six-over par in the 54-hole event with scores of 81, 75 and 78. As a team, Mercer placed fifth of 12 teams. Host LSU won the tournament, followed by Houston, Virginia, and NC State. The Bears have one more tournament before the SoCon Championships. Mercer will host the Brickyard Collegiate on the Brickyard at Riverside Course in Macon April 8-10. The Southern Conference tournament is April 15-17 in Hilton Head, SC.



TENNIS



PEYTON GOLLHOFER — Ball State University (Jr., Cartersville, GA; Laurel Springs Academy)… went 0-2 in singles matches and 2-0 in doubles as Ball State opened MAC play with losses to Miami (Ohio) and Bowling Green. In singles action, Gollhofer fell in three sets against Miami, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, and in two sets against Bowling Green, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Paired up with Victoria Sec, Gollhofer helped the Cardinals earn doubles wins by scores of 6-3 and 6-1. Ball State (7-7, 0-2 Mid-American Conference) travels to Ypsilanti, MI Friday for a conference match at Eastern Michigan University.



TRACK AND FIELD


MILES BEARDEN — Kansas State University (Sr., Cartersville, GA; Darlington HS)… finished eighth in the high jump at the 2018 Roadrunner Invitational hosted by Texas-San Antonio this past weekend. He cleared 1.95 meters to earn a point for the Wildcats, who finished third in the men's standings. K-State competes in the San Francisco State distance Carnival March 30-31 and at the Emporia State Open Saturday, March 31.
