College baseball update for 'Athletes Beyond Bartow'

The college baseball update for local athletes for the week ending Sunday, April 1. NOTE: The minor league seasons for Sam Howard (Albuquerque Isotopes, AAA Pacific Coast League) and Connor Justus (Mobile Bay Bears, AA Southern League) begin this week. Updates for other college spring sports and those athletes will be published separately on BSZ again this week.

 


COLLEGE BASEBALL



BRANDON ALLEN — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., OF, Woodland HS)… in a pair of starts as DH, Allen was 2-for-7 with a sac fly and two RBI last week. The Chargers were 2-1 for the week with wins over ABAC and Gordon State at home. The loss was at West Georgia Tech. GHC (24-11, 10-6) plays four games this week against South Georgia State with Tuesday’s game in Douglas and games Friday and Saturday at LakePoint.


ELLIOTT ANDERSON — Auburn University (Soph., LHP, Cartersville HS)… faced only one batter and issued a walk this past week in a relief appearance against rival Alabama, but the 13th-ranked Tigers won the game 5-2 Tuesday in Montgomery. Auburn went 2-2 for the week winning one of three conference games at home against Missouri. The Tigers (22-7, 4-5) host Alabama A&M Tuesday and play a three-game SEC series at 5th-ranked Arkansas Friday through Sunday.


BAILEY CAMPBELL — Young Harris College (Fr., 1B/DH, Cass HS)… drove in a run with a sacrifice fly Saturday at Georgia Southwestern and drew a walk in his only at bat last Tuesday against Emmanuel College. The Mountain Lions won both games and were 2-2 for the week. YHC (19-14, 12-9) plays road games at Anderson University Monday and at Emmanuel College Tuesday. The Mountain Lions then make the short trip to Dahlonega Friday through Sunday to play Peach Belt Conference rival University of North Georgia.


BRANDON ETHERIDGE — Limestone College (Sr., OF, Cass HS)… went 3-for-13 with a walk in four losses last week. The Saints lost at home to Wingate and dropped all three games of a Conference Carolinas series at King University (TN). Limestone (14-19, 6-9) plays at Wingate Tuesday and hosts a three-game conference series with Southern Wesleyan Friday and Saturday.


CODY JOHNSON — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., RHP, Cass HS)… made an eighth inning appearance last Monday in a 9-7 win at LakePoint over Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Johnson allowed four runs (three earned) two hits including a home run with three walks. The Chargers went 2-1 in conference games last week and improved to 24-11 overall and 10-6 in the GCAA. They play Tuesday at South Georgia State and will host the Hawks Friday and Saturday to complete the four-game conference series.


SEAN McDERMOTT — Mercer University (Jr., 1B/DH, Adairsville HS)… went 2-for-4 with two RBI in a 13-4 win over Florida A&M last Tuesday, but was hitless in a three-game series at East Tennessee State University. The Bears swept ETSU Wednesday through Friday. Mercer (23-6, 5-1 Southern Conference) play at Savannah State Tuesday, at Georgia Southern Wednesday, and host Furman for a three-game conference series Friday through Sunday.


HARRISON OSBORN — Point University (Fr., RHP, Cartersville HS)… worked the fifth inning last Friday of a 17-4 Appalachian Athletic Conference loss at Reinhardt. Osborn allowed two earned runs on four hits. The Skyhawks (20-13, 10-5) who won one of three games at Reinhardt, play at Talladega College Tuesday afternoon at travel to 9th-ranked Bryan College for a three-game conference series Friday and Saturday.


TRISTIN SMITH — Young Harris College (Jr., Inf., Adairsville HS)… went 2-for-17 with a double, two walks, and two RBI last week in four starts at second base. Smith also scored a pair of runs. Young Harris won three of four games including two of three Peach Belt Conference games at Georgia Southwestern. The Mountain Lions (19-14, 12-9) play five road games this week including non-conference single games at Anderson University (SC) and Emmanuel College before the short trip to University of North Georgia for three conference games Friday through Sunday.


TYLER WASHINGTON — Young Harris College (Sr., OF, Adairsville HS)… continued to watch his batting average rise as he went 5-for-13 in four games this past week. Included with his hits was a double, two walks, and two stolen bases. YHC (19-14, 12-9) plays at Anderson University (SC) Monday, at Emmanuel College Tuesday, and at University of North Georgia Friday through Sunday.
