Lady Canes cruise to Bartow County title


Cartersville volleyball won three matches without dropping a set to win the 2018 Bartow County Championship Tournament Saturday at Cass High School.


With their title, Cartersville has now won 12 straight Bartow County Tournament championships.


The Lady Canes defeated the host Lady Colonels in the championship match, 25-8, 25-20, and 25-10 to take the title.


Nedu Evans had 14 kills, four aces, and nine digs in the finals for Cartersville. Grace Hunter made 35 assists and had nine aces. Anna Grace Brock totaled six kills and four aces, while Anna Mathis contributed 15 digs and three aces.


“It was a good team effort in the finals,” said Cartersville coach Dutch Cothran. “Grace Hunter got us started with some great serving and she set well all day. Halle Matthews played well in the middle today and we had several players step up in Bekah Stevens’ absence today.”


Stevens missed Saturday’s tournaent to take the ACT.


In earlier action, the Lady Canes had two other wins.


Cartersville defeated Adairsville 25-20, 25-7 and topped Cass 25-16 and 25-18.


Evans had 18 kills against Adairsville and 14 against Cass in the first match. She also totaled five aces and 14 digs in those two matches. Hunter had 64 assists in the preliminary matches to go with a dozen assists. Brock contributed 13 kills, seven aces, and nine digs prior to the finals while Mathis had 24 digs in the first two matches.


The Lady Canes (11-11) host Chapel Hill and Troup Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Storm Center. Troup and Cartersville are both unbeaten in region actoin.


Cass defeated Woodland twice in preliminary rounds.


The Lady Colonels won the first meeting 27-25, 25-18 and needed three sets in the second match. Cass won the second match 25-22, 20-25, 25-19.


Cass plays at LaFayette Tuesday in non-region action. Adairsville will host Haralson County. Woodland joins Carrollton for two region matches at Hiram.
