Lady Canes secure regular season region title


Cartersville volleyball swept to straight set victories over LaGrange and Sandy Creek Tuesday evening in Tyrone to secure the Region 5-AAAA regular season title and the right to host the region playoff finals.


The Lady Canes beat LaGrange 25-3 and 25-18 before taking down the host Patriots 25-16 and 27-25. Cartersville survived a set point in the finale’ before taking the victory.


“We played well in stretches,” said Cartersville head coach Dutch Cothran. “We had some letdowns during the night, and that’s going to happen, but we responded well when the match (vs. Sandy Creek) got tight.”


Bekah Stevens had seven aces against LaGrange. Grace Hunter contributed four aces and 14 assists. Nedu Evans had 10 kills and a pair of aces. Anna Mathis added three aces.


Against Sandy Creek, Evans totaled 12 kills, five digs, and two aces. Stevens had eight kills, three assists, and three aces. Hunter added 35 assists and three aces. Mathis totaled 10 digs.


The Canes 17-11 (6-0) will travel to Murray County to play the hosts and Dalton on Thursday.




CASS DROPS AREA MATCHES AT ROME


The Lady Colonels lost two area volleyball matches Tuesday night at Rome High School, falling in a three-set battle with Carrollton and in straight sets to the hosts.


Cass edged Carrollton 25-23 in the opening set, but lost the next two sets to the Trojans 25-19 and 25-18.


Rome swept the Colonels 25-10 and 25-12.


Cass plays at Armuchee Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

WOODLAND LOSES TWO AREA MATCHES Woodland volleyball lost both of its matches Tuesday at Kell, one to East Paulding in three sets (18-25, 25-14, 25-13) and one to host Kell (25-13, 25-16). Macey Vaughn had 23 assists and eight digs on the day, while Caroline Gore had nine kills, nine digs and two aces. Woodland visits Sprayberry Thursday along with East Coweta.




ADAIRSVILLE FALLS TO SONORAVILLE



Adairsville lost to Sonoraville Tuesday night 25-15 and 25-23.

The Lady Tigers return to action Thursday at Haralson County.
