Athletes Beyond Bartow: Lawrence helps lead Clemson, locals make pro basketball news


Former Cartersville High quarterback Trevor Lawrence was impressive in helping lead the Clemson Tigers to a one-sided victory over ACC-rival N.C. State Saturday and a pair of local athletes begin professional basketball careers in this edition of Athletes Beyond Bartow. Cross country results and women's soccer capsules are also included for the week ending Sunday, October 21.


 

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

QUADRE ALLEN — Tusculum University (Sr., DB, Woodland HS)… (photo) had three tackles, including a sack for a seven-yard loss in the Pioneers’ 55-37 loss Saturday at Catawba. Tusculum (4-3, 3-2 South Atlantic Conference) host Carson-Newman University this Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.


DeANDRE APPLIN — Georgia State University (Sr., DB, Adairsville HS)… had one tackle assist in the Panthers’ 51-35 loss last Thursday at Arkansas State. GSU (2-5, 1-2 Sun Belt Conference) remains winless on the road this season but hosts Coastal Carolina this Saturday afternoon.


CHRIS BLACKSTON — University of West Georgia (Jr., DB, Adairsville HS)… collected four tackles (3 solo) as the NCAA D2 3rd-ranked Wolves edged visiting West Alabama Saturday, 27-25. UWG (8-0, 5-0 Gulf South Conference) travels to Mississippi College next Saturday.


XAVIOR COAXUM — LaGrange College (So., DB, Cartersville HS)… the Panthers’ starter at free safety had four solo tackles in a 37-17 loss to visiting Maryville College (TN). LaGrange (2-5, 1-3 USA-South Athletic Conference) plays at Brevard College next Saturday afternoon.


JONATHAN CRUZ — UNC-Charlotte (Fr., PK, Cartersville HS)… missed a pair of second quarter field goal attempts Saturday in the 49ers’ 21-13 loss at Middle Tennessee State. The misses were from 48 and 52 yards. Cruz had a pair of kickoffs that were both touchbacks. UNCC (3-4, 2-2 Conference USA) hosts Southern Miss this Saturday.


DALEN CURTIS — Brevard College (So., FB, Cartersville HS)… saw action in the Tornados’ 29-21 loss at home Saturday to North Carolina Wesleyan. Brevard (1-5, 1-3 USA-South Athletic Conference) hosts LaGrange College next Saturday afternoon.


JORDAN FERGUSON — Middle Tennessee State University (So., DL, Cartersville HS)… (photo) made four tackles, including one for a three-yard loss in the Blue Raiders’ 21-13 win over visiting Charlotte Saturday afternoon. MTSU (4-3, 3-1 C-USA) plays this Saturday at Old Dominion.


MILLER FORRISTALL — University of Alabama (R-So., TE, Cartersville HS)… participated in the Crimson Tide’s 58-21 win Saturday at Tennessee. Top-ranked Alabama (8-0, 5-0 SEC) has a bye week prior to traveling to 5th-ranked LSU on November 3.


RICO FRYE — Bowling Green University (Fr., RB, Cartersville HS)… rushed for 36 yards on eight attempts and caught one pass for two yards Saturday in the Falcons’ 49-14 Mid-America Conference loss at Ohio University. Frye had a long run of 19 yards. Bowling Green (1-7, 0-4) will look to snap a five game losing streak Tuesday, October 30 when they host Kent State.


CAMERON GONYEA — Saint Anselm College (Fr., DB, Cass HS)… saw action in the Hawks’ 31-28 home loss to Merrimack (MA). Saint Anselm (1-5) hosts Bentley (MA) in another Northeastern 10 Conference game this Saturday night.


GABRIEL GRIDLEY — Angelo State University (Jr., P, Cartersville HS)… punted six times Saturday for a 38.2 yard average at UT Permian Basin during a 44-20 win. He also ran for 20 yards and a first down on a first quarter fake punt. The Rams faced a fourth and fifteen from their own 37-yard line at the time in a scoreless game. The play continued a drive that set up an eventual 35-yard field goal and a 3-0 lead. Gridley had a long punt of 47 yards and had three of his punts downed inside the 20-yard line. Angelo State (4-4, 3-3 Lone Star Conference) hosts Adams State this Saturday evening in a non-conference game.


HUNTER HARDIN — Point University (So., OL, Woodland HS)… was a starter for the Skyhawks Saturday at right guard in a 21-17 win at St. Andrews University (NC). Point rallied from behind to score a go-ahead touchdown with only 0:05 remaining. The Skyhawks offense produced 344 total yards including 169 on the ground. Point (2-7, 1-3 Mid-South Conference) has a bye week before hosting Union College (KY) November 3.


SEAN HOLTON — Davidson College (So., DB, Cartersville HS)… saw action in the Wildcats’ 48-41 loss Saturday at Marist (NY). Davidson (5-3, 2-3 Pioneer League) hosts Stetson University in a PFL contest this Saturday afternoon.


ANTOINE JEFFERSON — Lindsey Wilson College (So., SL, Cartersville HS)… had a one-yard punt return and made three fair catches on punts Saturday. He also attempted one pass in the fourth quarter that fell incomplete as the NAIA 4th-ranked Blue Raiders lost 24-21 at Cumberland University (TN). Lindsey Wilson (5-2, 2-1 Mid-South Conference) hosts 8th-ranked Bethel University (TN) this Saturday afternoon.


BRADY JERNIGAN — Maryville College (TN) (Jr., DL, Woodland HS)… had one tackle assist in the Scots’ 37-17 win Saturday at LaGrange College. Maryville (4-2, 4-0 USA-South Athletic Conference) hosts Averett University (VA) this Saturday for Homecoming.


LUCAS JOHNSON — Georgia State University (Sr., OL, Cass HS)… was not a starter this week, but was an offensive line participant in the Panthers’ 51-35 loss Thursday at Arkansas State. GSU produced 422 total yards of offense in the loss. Georgia State (2-5, 1-2 Sun Belt Conference) entertains conference rival Coastal Carolina this Saturday afternoon in Atlanta.


BRADLEY KIRK — Shorter University (Fr., DB, Cartersville HS)… (photo left) had a pair of tackles in the Hawks’ Gulf South Conference loss to Mississippi College Saturday afternoon, 37-24. Shorter (0-8, 0-6 GSC) plays Thursday night at Delta State University.



TREVOR LAWRENCE — Clemson University (Fr., QB, Cartersville HS)… was 26-for-39 passing for 308 yards and one touchdown as the 3rd-ranked Tigers beat 15th-ranked N.C. State, 41-7. His touchdown pass was a 46-yarder to Tee Higgins late in the first quarter. He also had five rushing attempts for 12 yards. Lawrence has now passed for 1,176 yards and 12 touchdowns this season. Clemson (7-0, 4-0 ACC) travels to Florida State this Saturday afternoon.


MARK QUATTLEBAUM — UNC-Charlotte (Sr., SL, Cartersville HS)… had three receptions, including a 23-yard, fourth quarter touchdown catch in the 49ers’ 21-13 loss Saturday at Middle Tennessee State. His other two receptions were for five yards each in the third quarter. He was targeted as a receiver six times during the game. Quattlebaum added a one-yard punt return, five fair catches of MTSU punts, and a 16-yard kickoff return. He now has 12 catches this season for 142 yards and two touchdowns. Charlotte (3-4, 2-2) looks to bounce back at home this Saturday when they host Southern Miss in another C-USA game.


HIRAM VELEZ — University of West Florida (Sr., WR, Adairsville HS)… saw action for the 19th-ranked Argonauts in a 30-28 loss at home Saturday. UWF (5-3, 3-2 Gulf South Conference) travels to North Greenville this Saturday afternoon.


JAKE WALKER — Furman University (So., TE, Cartersville, GA, Darlington HS)… had one catch for eight yards Saturday in the Paladins’ 38-25 homecoming loss to Samford. Furman (2-4, 2-2 Southern Conference) plays at The Citadel this Saturday afternoon.





PRO BASKETBALL


A.J. MOSBY — Northern Arizona Suns (1st yr. pro; NBA G-League; Alcorn State; Cartersville HS)… was selected Saturday in the second round of the 2018 NBA G-League Draft (36th overall) by the Northern Arizona Suns. The Suns begin a 50-game regular season schedule this Saturday in Los Angeles against the South Bay Lakers.


ELIJAH ROBINSON — Villa San Martin (1st yr. pro; 6-5, 215, F, Liga Argentina; Emmanuel College; Excel Christian Acad.)… a starter at small forward, Robinson scored 30 points and had six rebounds to lead his team to a 75-71 win Friday night at Obera TC and had 10 points and two rebounds last Thursday in a 78-72 loss at Obera TC. Villa San Martin (1-1) will host Hindu Cub Friday night and will entertain Independent (SDE) November 1.






CROSS COUNTRY


JAISON MORNING — Valdosta State University (Sr., Cass HS)… placed 19th as an individual and led the Blazers to a ninth place team finish in the 18-team Georgia College & State University Bobcat Invitational in Milledgeville. Morning completed the 8K course in 26:03.6. The meet was won by UNC-Pembroke. VSU runs next at the Gulf South Conference Championship hosted by Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi on Saturday, November 3.





SOCCER


EMILY COLLUM — Georgia Southwestern University (Fr., MF, Adairsville HS)… played 14 minutes off the bench for the Hurricanes in a 14-0 loss at NCAA D2, 4th-ranked Columbus State University last Wednesday. Georgia Southwestern (2-13, 0-9 Peach Belt Conference) was also blanked by USC-Aiken Saturday, 7-0. The Canes host Albany State Wednesday out of conference and entertain Lander University in a PBC match Saturday night.


KATELYNN HARBEKE — Life University (Sr., MF, Cass HS)… started both home games for the Runnin’ Eagles this past week as Life lost 3-2 to NAIA 24th-ranked University of the Cumberlands (KY), but defeated Shawnee State (OH) 2-0. Harbeke played 71 minutes and had an assist and four shots on goal in the win Saturday. She added 65 minutes of playing time last Wednesday against Cumberlands. Life (5-9, 1-4 Mid-South Conference) plays at University of Pikeville Monday afternoon, hosts Middle Georgia State Wednesday night, and heads to Lindsey Wilson (KY) Sunday afternoon.


KATELYNN LAWHORN — Life University (So., MF, Adairsville HS)… saw action as a reserve in both of the Runnin’ Eagles’ games this past week. She totaled 33 minutes as Life split matches with University of the Cumberlands (KY) and Shawnee State (OH). The Eagles (5-9, 1-4 MSC) play at University of Pikeville Monday afternoon, host Middle Georgia State Wednesday night, and travel to conference leading Lindsey Wilson (KY) Sunday afternoon.


MARISSA MOWRY — Anderson University (Fr., F, Cartersville HS)… played 38 minutes last Wednesday and took a shot in the Trojans’ 1-0 home overtime win over Erskine College. Mowry also played 20 minutes off the bench and took one shot on goal Saturday in a 3-0 loss at Catawba College. Anderson (6-6-1, 5-2-1 South Atlantic Conference) plays conference games at Coker College Wednesday evening and at home against Lenoir-Rhyne University Saturday afternoon.
