CPRD 12U, 10U youth all-star football teams advance to championship games


The Cartersville Parks and Recreation Department 12U and 10U youth football all-stars won their respective Georgia Recreation and Parks Association Class A state playoff games Saturday to advance to state championship games Sunday. Cartersville 12U defeated Walton County West 42-0. Cartersville 10U defeated Walton County Central, 30-6.


The Cartersville 8U all-stars lost their semifinal contest to Walton County Central, 25-0.

Cartersville 42, Walton County West 0


Cartersville blanked Walton County West in a semifinal matchup Saturday afternoon to qualify for the GRPA Class A state championship game Sunday afternoon in Walton County at 2:30 p.m. Cartersville will play the Savannah Hurricanes, a 36-0 winner over Walton County Central on Saturday.


Cartersville 12U dominated the contest with Stephen Rowser and Khristian Lando identified as offensive standouts. Landen Heath had a take-away and double figures in tackles for the Cartersville defense which also recorded a safety. Kendrick Price, Logan Shrewsbury, Cooper Moon, and Trevor Harris were also selected for outstanding performances.

Cartersville 30, Walton County Central 6

Reed Ezell had first half touchdown runs from 12- and 76-yards as Cartersville took a 16-0 lead at halftime. Asa Mitcham made both first half, two-point PATs and added another in the second half.



Cartersville completed a long, time-consuming drive for a touchdown (scoring play not reported) and added a 16-yard touchdown pass from Ezell to Mitcham in the second half.


Hudson Lusk, Hagen Sharp, and Dixon Lindsey were noted for their offensive contributions for Cartersville. Lusk rushed for 20 yards. Sharp rushed for 12 yards. Lindsey added eight yards.


Defensive standouts for Cartersville were Bear McWhorter, Jacob Ellis (forced fumble), Mitcham, and Lusk.


Cartersville 10U faces Savannah Stars Sunday afternoon in Walton County for the GRPA State Championship. Savannah defeated Walton County West 34-0 on Saturday to reach the finals.


GRPA 8U Class A State Playoffs

Walton County Central 25, Cartersville 0


The Walton County Central rushing attack proved to be difficult to stop for Cartersville on a wet and muddy playing surface Saturday. The host Walton County 8U all-stars blanked Cartersville 25-0.


Cooper Melvin had 30 rushing yards for Cartersville in the loss, while Brody Jones and Drake Bailey also contributed.


Melvin and Jones both finished with eight tackles to help lead the Cartersville defense.


Walton County Central will face the Savannah Pit Bulls for the state championship Sunday afternoon. Savannah blanked Walton County West, 54-0, in the other Saturday semifinal.
