Athletes Beyond Bartow: College and pro athletes update for week ending February 3


Bartow County college and professional athletes contributed in seven different sports this past week including basketball, baseball, softball, tennis, track & field, swimming and wrestling.

 

COLLEGE BASKETBALL


MARK CHESTER — Georgia Northwestern Tech (Fr., G, Cass HS)… scored eight points in a 74-66 loss last Monday to Bryan College JV in Dayton, Tennessee. He also had six points Thursday night in a 112-89 loss to Hiwassee College JV in Madisonville, Tennessee. The Bobcats (4-14) host The Crown College Tuesday and Emory-Oxford College Saturday afternoon.


RYAN DAVIS — Francis Marion University (Sr., G, Cartersville HS)… scored a team-high 22 points, collected six rebounds, and dished a pair of assists Wednesday in a 91-72 loss at 21st-ranked UNC-Pembroke. Davis added 16 points, eight boards, five assists, and three steals in an 86-82 win Saturday over Georgia College. FMU (14-4, 10-3 Peach Belt Conference) plays at USC-Aiken Wednesday and hosts Clayton State Saturday.


ASHTON HAGANS — University of Kentucky (Fr., G, Cartersville, GA, Newton HS)… scored seven points with eight assists, six rebounds, and one steal in the Wildcats’ 87-52 win last Tuesday at Vanderbilt. He also had six points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals as UK extended their current win streak to eight in a 65-54 win at Florida. Kentucky (18-3, 7-1 SEC) hosts South Carolina Tuesday night at journeys to Mississippi State Saturday afternoon.


WHITNEY HARRIS — Toccoa Falls College (Fr., G, Woodland HS)… poured in 16 points, collected nine rebounds, and four assists in a 75-66 win Saturday over visiting Trinity Baptist College (FL). TFC (2-18) hosts Johnson University (FL) Monday before traveling to Covenant College Thursday night and Johnson & Wales University (NC) Saturday afternoon.


CARTER HEDDEN — Hocking CC (Fr., G, Cass HS)… in a pair of starts this past week, totaled five points, two rebounds, three assists, and one steal. The Hawks lost home games to Clark State CC and Lakeland CC to fall to 7-14 overall and 3-8 in conference. Hocking hosts Edison CC Wednesday and travels to Cuyahoga CC Saturday.


KIMORA McCLINIC — Middle Georgia State University (So., G, Cartersville HS)… had three rebounds in 18 minutes of playing time off the bench in a 76-60 home loss to Martin Methodist. MGSU (7-13, 3-10 Southern State Athletic Conference) entertains William Carey University Thursday night and Loyola-New Orleans Saturday.


JANA MORNING — Berry College (So., G, Cass HS)… scored in double figures for her sixth and seventh-consecutive games as the Vikings edged both Millsaps and Birmingham Southern over the weekend. Morning scored 18 points, grabbed two rebounds, and had one steal in a 56-53 victory over Millsaps Friday night and scored 14 points with five rebounds and two steals Sunday in a 60-58 win over Birmingham Southern. Berry (11-11, 7-4 Southern Athletic Association) has now won seven straight and travels to Sewanee (TN) Friday night and Centre College (KY) Sunday afternoon.


JONATHAN PRITCHETT — Vermont Tech CC (So., G, Woodland HS)… knocked down 14 points with five assists, four rebounds, and a steal in his team’s 94-88 loss Sunday at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. He also scored four points with four assists, four rebounds, and two steals last Wednesday as the Knights won convincingly at Hampshire CC, 97-44. VTCC (18-8, 11-4 Yankee Small College Conference) hosts Southern Maine CC Saturday afternoon and plays at Paul Smith’s College Sunday.


JOSIE SUMMERVILLE — North Park University (Fr., F, Adairsville HS)… scored four points, collected four rebounds, had an assist and two steals in a 79-63 home loss to Carroll (WI) Thursday. She also had three points, six boards, one block, and one assist as the Vikings won at Augustana (IL), 59-47 Saturday. North Park (8-14, 4-9 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) hosts Carthage College (WI) this Saturday.


DARIUS THROWER — Truett McConnell University (Jr., G, Excel Christian Academy)… scored one point and had two rebounds in 18 minutes of playing time Thursday during a 103-77 home win over Point University. TMU (12-11, 7-10 Appalachian Athletic Conference) hosts Milligan College Monday and St. Andrews (NC) University Wednesday before traveling to Tennessee Wesleyan Saturday.


HAKEEM WINTERS — Point University (Sr., F, Cartersville HS)… played 24 minutes off the bench, scored five points and had three rebounds and an assist in a 103-77 loss at Truett McConnell University Thursday. The Skyhawks also suffered losses to Allen University and 11th-ranked Union College (KY) during the week. Point (7-18, 5-13 AAC) hosts Reinhardt University Wednesday and journeys to St. Andrews University (NC) Saturday.




PRO BASKETBALL


ELIJAH ROBINSON — Club Atletico Villa San Martin (1st yr. pro; F, Argentine League; Emmanuel College, Excel Christian Academy)… scored a game-high 21 points with six rebounds, one assist and one steal last Tuesday during an 80-77 win over Obera TC. He also scored eight points with seven rebounds and two assists in an 89-76 loss Thursday at Salta Basketball. Villa San Martin (12-8) is in third place in the La Liga Argentina Northern Division of the Northern Conference. This week, Villa San Martin hosts Echague Wednesday and Union SF Friday.




COLLEGE BASEBALL



LEVI AYERS — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., RHP, Cartersville HS)… picked up a pitching win in his collegiate debut working one inning of relief in the Chargers’ 11-9 win Saturday over Chattanooga State CC. Ayers allowed three hits and a pair of earned runs in the top of the seventh to trail 9-3, but GHC rallied with an eight-run bottom of the frame and a come-from-behind win. Georgia Highlands (4-1) won two-of-three vs. Chattanooga State over the weekend after sweeping LaGrange College January 28. The Chargers host Cleveland State CC Tuesday, have a home doubleheader with Brewton Parker College Wednesday, and entertain Walters State CC in a three-game series Saturday and Sunday. BAILEY CAMPBELL — Young Harris College (So., DH, Cass HS)… had a seven-RBI day Sunday in a 2-for-2 performance that included a walk and a sac fly as designated hitter. Campbell also scored three runs as Young Harris salvaged one game in a three game set at Albany State. He also went 1-for-4 in the Mountain Lions’ 3-1 loss Saturday. YHC (1-2) travels to Anderson University (SC) Tuesday and plays a three-game set at Shorter University Friday through Sunday.


CARRINGTON EVANS — Augusta University (R-Soph., OF, Cartersville HS)… started in left field in all three games of a home weekend series with Mars Hill University as the Jaguars won two-of-three. Evans was 2-for-4, scored three runs, and drew a walk in Friday’s 13-8 win, but was 0-for-6 in the final two games of the series. Augusta (2-1) hosts Anderson University (SC) Wednesday before opening the Peach Belt Conference season at home Saturday and Sunday in a three-game series with Francis Marion University.


LANE GRIFFITH — University of West Georgia (Jr., C, Adairsville HS)… played in one of the Wolves’ three losses this past weekend at Wingate University going 0-for-1 with a run batted in on a sacrifice fly and a hit by pitch. UWG (0-3) plays at Belmont Abbey College Tuesday, at Florida Tech Friday afternoon, and has games at Valdosta State Friday night and Saturday afternoon.


KENNY JINKS — Shorter University (Fr., LHP, Woodland HS)… worked two-thirds of an inning Sunday, allowing three earned runs on four hits in the Hawks’ 13-4 loss at Eckerd College. Shorter (2-1) plays at Georgia Southwestern State Tuesday night prior to hosting Young Harris College in a three-game series Friday through Sunday.


HARRISON OSBORN — Point University (Soph., RHP, Cartersville HS)… worked 5 and one-third innings allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks as the Skyhawks completed a three-game sweep of University of Pikeville (KY) at LakePoint in Emerson. Osborn was credited with the win and fanned four. Point (3-0) hosts Toccoa Falls College in a doubleheader Wednesday, entertains Auburn-Montgomery Friday, and plays a doubleheader at AUM Saturday.


TRISTIN SMITH — Young Harris College (R-Sr., Inf., Adairsville HS)… went 1-for-4 with a walk and one run scored in two games this weekend at Albany State. The Mountain Lions (1-2) travel to Anderson University (SC) Tuesday before a three-game series at Shorter University Friday through Sunday.


TYLER WASHINGTON — Young Harris College (Sr., OF, Adairsville HS)… started two games and was 2-for-9 at the plate as the Mountain Lions won one of three games in a series at Albany State over the weekend. Washington had a double, two RBIs, and scored two runs. Young Harris (1-2) plays at Anderson University (SC) Tuesday and has a three-game series at Shorter University Friday through Sunday.




SOFTBALL


SIERRAH GANI — Georgia Highlands CC (So., 2B, Cass HS)… went 3-for-9 in the Chargers’ first four games. She had a walk, a triple, two sacrifice hits, four RBIs, and two runs scored in the season opening stretch. GHC also had a pair of wins Saturday over Motlow State to even their season record at 3-3. The Chargers will host the Border Battle this weekend and will play games against Spartanburg Methodist, Harford, Calhoun CC, and Cleveland State CC.




TENNIS


PEYTON GOLLHOFER — Ball State University (Sr., Cartersville, GA, Laurel Springs Academy)… won her Line 3 singles match over Lisa Khamassi 6-4, 6-1 and paired with teammate Isabelle Dohanics to defeat Elvira Esteo and Lucia Zagar as the Cardinals won 6-1 over Youngstown State Saturday at home. Ball State (3-1) hosts Eastern Illinois Universitiy this Saturday afternoon.




TRACK AND FIELD


ANNA HIGHTOWER — Georgia Tech (Sr., Cartersville HS)… placed 14th at the University of Michigan Power Five Invitational Saturday by clearing 11 feet, seven and three-quarter inches. The Yellow Jackets’ team will have competitors next weekend at the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational, the Vanderbilt Music City Invitational, and the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational.


TREVOR KNOWLES — Albion College (Soph., Woodland HS)… placed fourth in the triple jump Saturday with a leap of 43 feet, one and three-quarter inches at the Midwest Invitational hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University. The Britons will send competitors next weekend for meets at Aquinas College and Grand Valley State University.




SWIMMING


JORDAN BALDWIN — Life University (Fr., Woodland HS)… placed 19th in the 200-yard backstroke preliminaries (2:35.34) and 25th in the 100-yard backstroke preliminaries (1:08.30) at the Mid-South Conference Championships.


KATIE LAWHORN — Life University (Jr., Adairsville HS)… was 33rd in both the 50-yard freestyle preliminaries (31.18) and the 100-yard freestyle preliminaries at the Mid-South Conference Championships.


DAWSON McCLURE — Life University (Fr., Woodland HS)… placed 18th in the 100-yard breaststroke preliminaries (1:05.37) and was 25th in the 100-yard freestyle preliminaries (51.91) at the Mid-South Conference Championships.




WRESTLING


JAKE HUFFINE — UT-Chattanooga (Jr., 133-wt. class, Woodland HS)… lost to Codi Russell of Appalachian State, 11-3, in the Mocs’ 21-14 team loss Sunday to the Mountaineers. UTC (5-5) hosts The Citadel Friday night and Campbell University next Sunday.
