Chargers halted by Hawks, 9-5


The Georgia Highlands College baseball team fell behind early Tuesday and was not able to make up ground in a 9-5 conference loss to South Georgia State CC at LakePoint.


The Chargers matched the Hawks with ten hits, but South Georgia scored eight runs across the first four innings to build an 8-3 advantage. GHC scored twice in the fifth inning to narrow the margin to 8-5, but South Georgia added an insurance run in the sixth inning before both teams went scoreless over the final three frames. South Georgia State starting pitcher Landon Nevill (6 IP, 5R, 4ER, 9H, 0BB, 6K) picked up the pitching win. Caleb Crews (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 3K) wrapped up the final three innings on the mound for the Hawks.


David Meadows had three hits and one RBI to pace the South Georgia State offense. Blake Ebo added a pair of hits including a double and two RBI. Cole Escher drove in three runs for the Hawks. Chargers’ starting pitcher Zach Fordham (2 IP, 5ER, 5H, 4BB, 2K) was tagged with the loss. Ethan Underwood (1 IP, 2ER, 3H, 1K), Dalton Rhadans (5 IP, 2R, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 3K), and Anthony Reneo (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 1K) also pitched for Georgia Highlands. Keith Lyle had two hits including a double and one RBI for GHC. Parker Orr and Blake Brady also had two hits in the loss.


South Georgia State CC improved to 16-16 overall and 6-7 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association with the win. Georgia Highlands (19-14, 7-7) travels to South Georgia State to complete the conference series with a single game Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday.
