Woodland girls drop region third place match; advance to state as 4-seed


The Woodland High School girls tennis team dropped the Region 7-AAAAA third place consolation match to Hiram Thursday afternoon, but will advance to the Class 5A state tournament next week as a 4-seed.


The Lady Cats’ Line 1 doubles tandem of Emma Savage and Eryn Gentry picked up the only Woodland win of the day with a straight sets 6-1, 6-3 victory. Breanna Shook at Line 1 singles and Kayla Gales at Line 3 singles took their matches to a third set, but lost. Shook won her opening set 6-4, but then lost 3-6, 3-6. Gales won her second set 6-3, but dropped the first and third sets by 1-6 scores. Woodland’s Line 2 doubles team of Abigail Spaulding and Monterya Morrow lost 3-6, 4-6 and Lady Cats’ Line 2 singles player, Becky Wesley, was pulled off the court when the team match was decided although Wesley was leading in the third set.


Woodland (11-9) will open the state playoffs next week at the region champion from Region 6-AAAAA.
