Georgia Highlands sweeps Andrew, secures conference tourney berth


The Georgia Highlands College softball team secured a spot in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association playoffs with a doubleheader sweep of Andrew College Thursday at Stars Field in Cassville.


The Chargers won the opener 12-5 before blanking the Tigers in the second game, 10-0.


Kayla Laukka had a monster day at the plate going 4-for-6 with a home run, three doubles, and 10 RBI in the doubleheader. Deyonce Lewis also had a four-hit day and finished with two RBI for the Chargers.


Mya Adams and Lexi Palazzo contributed three hits and one double each. Sierrah Gani, Jazzmyn Shelton, and Alexis Davis added two hits each in the doubleheader. Kara Kight (7 IP, 5R, 3ER, 10H, 3BB, 4K) was the winning pitcher in Game 1 and also homered in the game. Haley Robinson (5 IP, 0R, 6H, 0BB, 2K) earned the win in the circle in Game 2.


The losses drop Andrew to 17-30 on the season and 7-17 in conference play.


Due to impending weather, home games scheduled for Saturday have been moved to next Tuesday afternoon when Georgia Highlands (24-16, 15-9) will host Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. The Chargers will then conclude the regular season Saturday, April 27 at home with a conference doubleheader against West Georgia Tech. The GCAA conference tournament will include the top four teams in the conference and will be May 3 and 4 at Strong Rock Christian in Locust Grove.
