Trapheagen wins two events to lead local track & field athletes advancing to state finals
Fifteen local high school track and field athletes advanced from their respective GHSA State Sectional Meets Saturday to reach the State Finals this Thursday through Saturday.
Three different local athletes won four state sectional titles including two by Woodland’s McKenna Trapheagen.
Trapheagen won both the girls 1600 meter and 3200 meter runs at the Class 5A sectional in Fayetteville. Sydney Molinaro of Woodland won the girls high jump at the same sectional and Cartersville’s Nick Bebko won the Class 4A boys pole vault sectional in Columbus.
London Shaw of Cartersville, Nakiyah Washington of Adairsville, and Rylee Evans of Woodland were the other two-event state finals qualifiers.
Shaw was a top-8 sectional qualifer in the two throwing events. She was second in the shot put and eighth in the discus throw. Washington was also a finals qualifying in the AAA throwing events. Evans was a double qualifier in the two distance events. She was fifth in the 1600 meter run and seventh in the 3200 meter run. The Class 3A and 4A State Finals will be at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany. The Class 5A State Finals will be at Carrollton High School.
