Cass wins at Rome; Cartersville and Woodland drop region contests


Cass softball picked up a big region win Tuesday night at Rome High School while Cartersville suffered a 12-1 home loss to region foe Central-Carroll. Meanwhile, Woodland dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Carrollton in a rematch of last season's Region 7-AAAAA title matchup.

 

CASS 18, ROME 7


The Lady Colonels posted runs in all five of their offensive frames on their way to an easy 18-7 win at Rome in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass led 4-2 after one inning and stretched their lead to 13-2 in the third inning before holding off the host Wolves for an 11-run victory in five innings. The Lady Colonels out hit Rome eleven to six and also took advantage of a dozen walks and a hit batsman. Cass pitcher Macenzie Dougharty (3 IP, 4R 3ER, 3H, 2BB, 1K) picked up the win in the circle for the Colonels. Kylee Hembree (2 IP, 3ER, 3H, 0BB, 1K) took the circle for the final two innings.


Kylee Hembree led the Cass offense with two hits including a double and four RBI. Eryn Lee also had a two hit game. Alexis Woods, Savannah Tatum, and Kimberly Allen each contributed a hit and two RBI. Ansley Hight and Holli Elrod tossed in one hit and one RBI each. Tatianna Christian and Hailie Owens added the other Colonels’ base hits.


The loss drops Rome to 1-5 for the season and 0-2 in region play.


Cass (1-1, 1-1) travels to Kell for another Region 7-AAAAA contest Thursday at 5:55 p.m.




CENTRAL-CARROLL 12, CARTERSVILLE 1


The visiting Central-Carroll Lions broke open a scoreless game in the top of the fourth inning Tuesday night at Cartersville with a seven-run inning on their way to a 12-1 Region 5-AAAA win. Central added a single run in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth inning to secure their eleven-run win. Cartersville’s lone run came in the fifth inning.


A pair of Lions pitchers limited Cartersville to six hits in the contest and the Lady Canes’ run was unearned.


McKinley Chada (3.1 IP, 6ER, 5H, 4BB) started in the circle and was tagged with the pitching loss. Kiley Arnold (2.2 IP, 6R, 2ER, 6H, 3BB, 2K) worked in relief for the Lady Canes.


Gracie McKey had three hits including a double and three RBI to pace the Lions attack. Shirley Sharp and Ava Tyson combined for four more hits and three RBI for Central.


Campbell Rogers and Cio Seigler both had two hits for Cartersville. One of Seigler’s hits was a double. Mikey Lewis drove in the Canes’ run with a hit and Lauren McElhaney added a double.


Central improved to 4-3 on the season and 2-0 in Region 5-AAAA.


With the loss, Cartersville slips to 1-2 on the season and 1-1 in region action. The Hurricanes host Adairsville Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and play at Woodland Thursday at 5:30 p.m.




CARROLLTON 3, WOODLAND 1


The visiting Trojans defeated Woodland Tuesday night 3-1 in a Region 7-AAAAA contest.


The two teams were tied 1-1 after two innings and Carrollton took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning before adding an insurance run in the top of the seventh. The lone Woodland run came on a long, second inning home run by junior Morgan Cooper. Trojans' pitcher Olivia Fann went the distance for Carrollton in the circle to earn the win. Although the Lady Cats had some opportunities, they were not able to come up with the timely hits to drive in runs. Woodland stranded nine base runners.


Carrollton improved to 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in region games. Woodland (1-1, 1-1) hosts Cartersville Thursday.
