Late rally lifts Cartersville to region win over Cedartown


Cartersville softball broke open a tied game Tuesday night in the sixth inning with a five-run frame and defeated visiting Cedartown 8-3 in Region 5-AAAA action. The Lady Canes held leads of 2-0 through two innings and 3-1 through four inings before Cedartown tied the game in the fifth.


In Cartersville’s sixth inning, the Lady Canes posted five runs on five singles and a Cedartown error.


Ava Perkins earned the pitching victory for Cartersville with a complete-game, 99-pitch effort. She scattered seven hits and two walks recording two strikeouts.


Roslyn Blankenship and Reagan Peek combined for four hits and three RBI for Cedartown. Madi Reynolds (6 IP, 8R, 4ER, 11H, 1BB, 5K) was the losing pitcher for the Lady Bulldogs. Cartersville got three hits each from Elizabeth Nelson and Campbell Rogers. AnnaKate McElhaney finished with two hits and four RBI. Lauren McElhaney drove in one run and had two hits. Cio Seigler had a leadoff single in the sixth inning and made her way around to score the Hurricanes’ go-ahead run.


The loss drops Cedartown to 9-10 overall and 4-3 in region play.


With the win, Cartersville (7-7, 4-3) moves into a third place tie with the Lady Bulldogs behind Central-Carroll and LaGrange in the Region 5-AAAA standings.


The Lady Canes travel to Central-Carroll Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. region contest and will open the Bartow County Championship tournament against Woodland Saturday at 11 a.m. at Adairsville.
