Softball roundup: Woodland wins at Villa Rica
Woodland softball scored four times in their first offensive frame Thursday night at Villa Rica and built a 6-3 lead through three innings before holding on to beat the host Wildcats 7-5 in Region 7-AAAAA action. Villa Rica scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the Woodland lead to 6-5, but the Lady Cats added an insurance run in the sixth for their eventual two-run win.
Lainey Baker (7 IP, 5ER, 12H, 3BB, 11K) struck out eleven in her complete-game win.
Ansley Evans was the only Woodland player with two hits. Five other Lady Cats — Bella Carnes (double), Morgan Bailey, Morgan Cooper (double), Hannah Miller (RBI, shown in photo vs. Cass earlier this week), and Cassie Jones (RBI) had the other Woodland base hits. Brianna Hill drove in a run.
Villa Rica falls to 10-12 overall and 7-7 in region play. Woodland (12-10, 9-4) retains firm grip of third place in the Region 7-AAAAA standings. The Lady Cats have four games slated for next week and host Rome for their Senior Night Monday at 5:55 p.m.
SONORAVILLE 4, ADAIRSVILLE 0
Adairsville softball was shutout Thursday night at Sonoraville, 4-0.
Taylor Long of Sonoraville tossed a complete-game, two-hitter with a walk and 14 strikeouts. Adairsville’s Taylor Rhoades suffered the tough loss in the circle, allowing only one earned run on five hits. She struck out three.
Taylor Long and Kinsley Long combined to drive in three of the runs for the Phoenix.
Alexa Varner and Victoria O’Neal (double) had the only Lady Tigers hits.
Sonoraville improved to 10-7 overall and 5-2 in region action.
Adairsville (6-12, 3-4) travels to Coahulla Creek Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in their final region regular season game.
HIRAM 11, CASS 1
Hiram completed a two-game, regular season sweep of Cass softball Thursday night at the Lady Colonels diamond with an 11-1 win. The visiting Hornets scored in each of the first four innings to take a commanding lead.
Angel Felker was 3-for-4 for Hiram with a double and three RBI. Xyla Quajraine and Kyleigh Haney homered for the Hornets.
Sydney Admonick (5 IP, 1R, 0ER, 3H 1BB, 4K) was the winning pitcher for the Hornets.
The Lady Colonels scored their only run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Ansley Hight. She added a hit in the fourth. Rachael Lee had the other Cass hit leading off the fourth inning.
Lee (2.2 IP, 9R, 4ER, 11H, 0BB, 2K) was the losing pitcher for Cass. Kylee Hembree (2.1 IP, 2ER, 2H, 0BB, 2K) also pitched for the Colonels.
Hiram improved to 7-12 overall and 7-6 in Region 7-AAAAA.
Cass (10-13, 5-8) hosts Paulding County Monday at 5:55 p.m.
