4th-ranked Chapel Hill eliminates Colonels


The Cass Colonels fell behind early and never recovered Saturday night at 4th-ranked Chapel Hill dropping an 85-52 decision in the Sweet Sixteen round of the Class 5A State Tournament in Douglasville.


The host Panthers led 19-6 after one quarter and 39-13 at halftime en route to an eventual 33-point win.


Kelvin Hunter led Chapel Hill with 19 points. Ramon Soyoye scored 11 and Jasiah Devone added 10 points for the Panthers.

“We knew we would have to hit shots to beat them,” said Cass coach Kevin Cunningham following the game. “We started fine and had a 4-0 lead but we went on the miss our next fourteen shots. I’m proud of what we accomplished this season but no one in this program is satisfied. We’ll get ready for the summer and do our best to make a deeper run in the playoffs next year.”


KJ Rogers scored 21 points as the Colonels’ top scorer. Devin Henderson finished with nine. Jayden Foster scored eight. Sacovie White tossed in five. Jakai Baldwin had four points. Tyrek Hames and Jelani Hames added three and two points, respectively.


Chapel Hill (22-8) advances to host Union Grove next Wednesday in the Class 5A quarterfinals.


The Colonels’ season ends with a 15-14 mark.
