5th-ranked Chargers win series opener with South Georgia State

The Georgia Highlands College baseball team won the first game of this week’s four-game conference series by taking a 7-5 decision at South Georgia State on Tuesday.


Second baseman Clay Wiesen and center fielder Ryan Wideman combined for seven of the Chargers’ thirteen hits to pace the offense. Wiesen’s hits included a double. Wideman’s included a double, a homer, and two RBIs.


The game was tied 1-1 through five innings before GHC posted two runs in each of the next three innings building a 7-2 lead. South Georgia threatened with three runs in the bottom of the ninth but a strikeout with Hawks’ baserunners at second and third base ended the contest.


Brodie Chestnutt (2.1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 2BB) made the pitching start for Georgia Highlands. Andrew Arnold (1.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 3K), Oliver Wood (4.1 IP, 4ER, 4H, 2BB, 2K), and Hunter Ward (0.2 IP, 0R, 1H) also pitched for the Chargers. 


Ryan Martin (HR, double, two RBIs) and Davis Newman (RBI) produced two hits for GHC. Barrett Eldridge and CJ Blackwell (double) added one hit. Luke Orfi drove in a run with a sac fly.


Georgia Highlands (37-6, 9-4), ranked No. 5 nationally, will host South Georgia State (22-21, 5-8) for the remainder of the series with a single game Friday night and a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
