Athletes Beyond Bartow: Barnett briefly called up by Athletics

Former Purple Hurricane pitcher Mason Barnett was called up briefly last week by the MLB Athletics, and Anthony Seigler returned to live action last week with the Worcester Red Sox.


MLB / MiLB


MASON BARNETT — MLB Athletics; Las Vegas Aviators (A’s Triple-A affiliate; 5th-year pro; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … made a five-inning start for the Triple-A Aviators at the Reno Aces on April 14 for his second win of the MiLB season. He allowed no runs on one hit and five walks while striking out seven. He was then called up to the MLB Athletics for a home relief appearance this past Sunday. Barnett needed 43 pitches to cover two-plus innings versus the White Sox in an eventual 7-4 loss. Since Barnett would have been unavailable to pitch for a day or two, the Athletics have summoned a fresh bullpen arm to take his roster spot. Barnett was optioned back to Las Vegas. The Aviators have a six-game series at home this week against the Salt Lake Bees.


LOGAN MARTIN — Richmond Flying Squirrels (San Francisco Giants Double-A affiliate; 4th-year pro; Kentucky; Cartersville HS) … made his second pitching start for Richmond on April 14 and went 4-1/3 innings with no decision in an eventual 11-7 win at the Hartford Yard Goats. Martin allowed one earned run on three hits and one walk. He fanned four. The Flying Squirrels entered the week with a 12-2 record, leading the Eastern League Southwest Division. They host the Somerset Patriots for six games this week through Sunday.


ANTHONY SEIGLER — Worcester Red Sox (Boston Red Sox Triple-A affiliate; 9th-year pro; Cartersville HS) … returning to action recently following a lingering left knee injury he suffered during the offseason Dominican Winter League, Seigler has gone 2-for-18 in five games at the Triple-A level against Columbus at home and on the road at Nashville. Both hits were doubles. He has two walks, one stolen base, and one RBI. The 26-year-old utility player started the year on the MLB Red Sox injured list after moving over from the Milwaukee Brewers in the offseason. Worcester entered the week with an 11-9 record. They host the Syracuse Mets for six games this week through Sunday.



PGA TOUR AMERICAS


BUCK BRUMLOW — 2nd yr. pro (University of Georgia; Cartersville HS) … shot 74-67 (1-under par) last Thursday and Friday, but missed the cut at the Brazil Open at the Rio Olympic Golf Course in Rio de Janeiro. The 36-hole cut was 5-under par on the 7,163-yard, par-71 layout. The tour moves to Argentina this week for the 94 Abierto del Centro Zurich.



GOLF 


CHRISTINA SURCEY — Lipscomb University (So., Cartersville resident, North Cobb Christian) …  recorded rounds of 71-76-74 (+5) and tied for 12th in the 69-player field at the 2026 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship held at Dothan Country Club in Dothan, Alabama. The Bisons finished fifth, behind North Florida, Florida Gulf Coast, Stetson, and Central Arkansas in the 12-team field. 



TENNIS


EMILY BUSH — University of North Georgia (Sr., Cartersville HS) … won each of her singles matches last week as the Nighthawks lost at 14th-ranked Columbus State University, but won at Middle Georgia State University and Georgia Southwestern University. She played Line 6 singles vs. Columbus State, Line 5 vs. MGSU, and Line 3 vs. Georgia Southwestern. She lost doubles sets with partner Linn Goerdes in two of the matches, but was up 4-3 with partner Lauryn Swatski at Georgia Southwestern when their set was halted. UNG, ranked 11th by ITA, plays in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament this weekend at Columbus State.


SYDNEY COPPOLA — Berry College (Jr., Cass HS) … won her Line 3 doubles set with partner Charlee Eidson and won her Line 6 singles match in straight sets on Sunday as the Vikings blanked Oglethorpe University, 7-0. On Saturday, facing the University of Mary Washington in Sewanee, Tennessee, she lost her Line 5 singles match and her Line 3 doubles match with Eidson. Berry faces Southwestern University (TX) on Friday in the opening round of the Southern Athletic Association Championship Tournament in Memphis, Tennessee.



TRACK AND FIELD


KENDRICK PRICE — Troy University (So., Cartersville HS) … placed 54th (10.91) in the 100-meter dash at the Georgia Tech Invitational this past weekend. The Penn Relays are next on the Trojans’ schedule this Thursday through Saturday.


JAYLEN SCOTT — Reinhardt University (So., Cartersville HS) … finished seventh (126-4.50) in the discus throw April 15 at the Life University Mid Week Mini Meet in Marietta. The Appalachian Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships begin on Thursday.



BEACH VOLLEYBALL


AILEE ENGLAND — Berry College (So., Cartersville HS) … playing with Flight 3 partner Kaylee Howell, the duo won three matches at the AVCA DIII National Championships in Gulf Breeze, Alabama, last Friday and Saturday. Berry defeated LaGrange College (3-0), East Texas Baptist (3-0), and Stevenson University (MD) (3-2) to reach the national championship match against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Crusaders won the title match 3-0, but the England-Howell duo was up one set when their match was halted. The Vikings won 20+ games for the second straight year, finishing 21-10 as Division III national runner-up.


LAUREN LAWSON — University of South Carolina (Jr., Cartersville HS) … the 17th-ranked Gamecocks went 3-1 this past Friday and Saturday at the Stetson University Deland Cup while Lawson and her Flight 3 partner Evie Ziffer went 1-3. The duo won in three sets as the Gamecocks beat UNC Wilmington 4-1. Their losses were also in three sets as South Carolina defeated Georgia State and 14th-ranked Stetson, but lost 3-2 to 18th-ranked North Florida. The Gamecocks play Thursday and Friday in the Big 12 Conference Championships in Tucson, Arizona.


LONDON MOULTRIE — Wingate University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … had a Flight 3 straight sets win with partner Amelia Talbott as the Bulldogs defeated McKendree University (MD) last weekend at the AVCA DII National Championships in Gulf Breeze, Alabama. The Flight 3 duo also suffered losses to Colorado Mesa and St. Leo University (FL), but won their match against Erskine College (SC). Wingate finished the season with a 13-21 record.



SOFTBALL


KILEY ARNOLD — Shorter University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … went 1-for-11 with one walk in four losses last week — two to visiting Southern Wesleyan University (SC) and two at King University (TN). The Hawks finished the season with a 13-36 record overall and were 7-21 in Conference Carolinas action. They did not qualify for the Conference Carolinas tournament. Arnold batted .173 with eight RBI in 35 games and 33 starts. She had a .914 fielding percentage.


HAYLEE DISHMON — Berry College (Jr., Cass HS) … was inserted as a pinch runner in both games of a doubleheader with Piedmont University on April 15 and scored one run as the Vikings won both games over the Lions. Berry plays a three-game home series with Sewanee-University of the South on Saturday and Sunday.


ANSLEY HIGHT — Reinhardt University (Jr., Cass HS) … went 8-for-18 in six games last week as the Eagles went 4-2 with two losses at Brenau University and four wins at home in doubleheaders with Milligan University (TN) and Tennessee Wesleyan University. Hight hit two home runs and had two doubles, two walks, one sacrifice fly, two runs scored, and six RBI. Reinhardt (23-7, 19-5 Appalachian Athletic Conference) visits Johnson University (TN) for two games on Wednesday to finish regular-season play.


ALYSSA JARRETT — Piedmont University (Jr., Adairsville HS) … in four home games last week — two losses against Berry College and two wins against Covenant College — she appeared in each game and started three. The Lions catcher was 1-for-9 at the plate with one walk. Piedmont (22-14, 9-5 CCS) wraps up regular season action Friday with a doubleheader at Wesleyan College and will play in the Collegiate Conference of the South Tournament beginning Thursday, April 30.


ERYN LEE — Reinhardt University (Sr., Cass HS) … went 6-for-14, including two walks, two sacrifice hits, two runs scored, three stolen bases, and two RBI last week as the Eagles swept home doubleheaders against Milligan University (TN) and Tennessee Wesleyan University, but lost both games at Brenau University (GA). Reinhardt (23-7, 19-5 Appalachian Athletic Conference) visits Johnson University on Wednesday for a doubleheader. The AAC Tournament begins Monday, April 27, in Kingsport, Tennessee.


RACHAEL LEE — Valdosta State University (Sr., Cass HS) … a starter at first base, Lee went 4-for-9 with two doubles, two walks, two runs scored, and four RBI as the Blazers won two of three games last weekend over visiting Christian Brothers University (TN). Valdosta State (21-22, 13-14 Gulf South Conference) plays a three-game conference series at the 14th-ranked University of West Florida on Friday and Saturday.


AVA PERKINS — Lander University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … made a start last Saturday at second base and went 2-for-2 with a sacrifice hit, two walks, and scored two runs in a 12-4 Bearkats win at Georgia College. Lander (27-15, 13-8 Peach Belt Conference) hosts Tusculum University (TN)  on Tuesday and hosts three games with USC-Aiken on Friday and Saturday.


ALEXIS WOODS — Tennessee State University (Jr., Cass HS) … enjoyed her best week of the season at the plate, going 8-for-11, including one triple, one double, one sacrifice hit, one sacrifice fly, three runs scored, one stolen base, and seven RBI as the Tigers lost at Middle Tennessee State and dropped two of three at home against Western Illinois University. Her efforts raised her season batting average to .310. TSU (2-32, 1-16 Ohio Valley Conference) hosts a three-game series with Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville on Saturday and Sunday.



BASEBALL


CAMERON ADAMS — Shorter University (R-Fr., Excel Christian Academy) … the second baseman made one start and appeared in four games last week as the Hawks beat visiting Middle Georgia State, but lost three at Mount Olive University (NC). Adams went 0-for-8 at the plate. The Hawks (15-26, 6-24 Conference Carolinas) visit Carson-Newman University on Tuesday and will conclude their season with three games at Southern Wesleyan University (SC) on Friday and Saturday.


CURT BONNER — LaGrange College (Sr., Cartersville HS) … went 5-for-10, including one walk, four hit by pitch, one sac fly, one stolen base, three runs scored, and five RBI, in the Panthers’ three home wins last weekend over 14th-ranked Piedmont University. LaGrange (18-15, 7-8 Collegiate Conference of the South) hosts Maryville College (TN) for three games on Thursday through Saturday.


CALEB DANIEL — Georgia Tech (So., Cartersville HS) … went 5-for-9 at the plate, including one homer, two doubles, one hit by pitch, one walk, two runs scored, and two RBI, as the Yellow Jackets defeated Georgia Southern University and lost two of three games at the University of North Carolina last week. Daniel is hitting for a .326 average with nine homers and 24 RBI. Third-ranked Georgia Tech (32-7, 16-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) plays 5th-ranked Georgia on Tuesday night at Truist Park and hosts Wake Forest for three games on Friday through Sunday.


MICAH EARWOOD — Southeastern University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … allowed two hits, but retired the final out last Friday to earn his first save as the Fire outlasted 12th-ranked Webber International University (FL) 7-6 in Babson Park, Florida. Southeastern (32-14, 16-8 Sun Conference) welcomes New College of Florida for four games on Thursday through Saturday.


ELLIOTT EASTIN — Covenant College (Jr., Cartersville HS) … went 5-for-16, including one walk, one run scored, and two RBI, as the Scots defeated Berry College and won two of three over Maryville College (TN) last week at home. Covenant (14-21, 6-12 Collegiate Conference of the South) visits Berry on Tuesday and plays a three-game non-conference series on Friday and Saturday at Toccoa Falls College.


RYAN FARR — Kentucky Christian University (So., Adairsville HS) … made two relief pitching appearances and collected one pitching win last week. His win was a two-inning appearance at Ohio Christian University, where he faced eight batters in the tenth and eleventh innings of an 8-4 win. He allowed no runs and struck out two. On Saturday, the right-hander picked up his first save by working a scoreless ninth inning, yielding one walk, in a 5-2 home victory over Rio Grande College (OH). The Knights (21-19, 11-13 River States Conference) host a doubleheader with Alice Lloyd College (KY) on Wednesday and travel to Oakland City College (IN) for three games on Friday and Saturday.


JACKSON HARWELL — Wallace State CC-Dothan (Fr., Cartersville HS) … was one of eleven pitchers utilized in a 15-5 home loss April 14 to Tallahassee State CC. He allowed one earned run on one hit and two walks while striking out one of five batters faced. Wallace-Dothan (25-25, 19-13 Alabama Community College Conference) has a four-game, home-and-home series on Thursday and Saturday with Wallace State CC-Selma.


RYAN JOHNSON — University of Illinois (Fr., Cartersville HS) … pitched the final two-thirds of the seventh inning last Friday in the Illini’s 16-6 home loss to Oregon. He yielded one earned run on two hits, facing four batters. Illinois (20-18, 8-10 Big Ten Conference) welcomes Illinois State on Tuesday night and entertains 20th-ranked Nebraska for a three-game series on Friday through Sunday.


AIDAN LARKIN — Georgia Highlands College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … went 2-for-15, including one double, two walks, and three runs scored as the Chargers split four games in a home-and-home conference series last week with East Georgia State.  GHC (39-11, 13-4 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association) visits Andrew College on Tuesday and East Georgia State on Thursday.


HUNTER LOVETT — Oglethorpe University (Fr., Cass HS) … pitched 3-2/3 innings of relief last Saturday and was saddled with the pitching loss in a 9-7 home loss to Berry College. Lovett was charged with three runs (all unearned) on four hits, three walks, and one hit batter while striking out one. The Stormy Petrels (18-15, 9-6 Southern Athletic Association) visit 9th-ranked Centre College (KY) for three games on Saturday and Sunday.


SAM MELTON — Guilford College (Sr., Cartersville HS) … went 0-for-1 with one sacrifice hit last week in home wins over Johnson & Wales University-Charlotte and Eastern Minnonite University (VA). The Quakers (18-17, 6-11 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) visit Roanoke College (VA) on Tuesday, Greensboro College (NC) on Wednesday, and play a doubleheader at Randolph-Macon College (VA) on Saturday.


LUKE MILLER — Columbus State University (So., Cartersville HS) … appeared in two games and went 1-for-6 with one run scored, and one RBI as the Cougars took two of three against visiting Augusta University last weekend. CSU (27-16, 18-9 Peach Belt Conference) visits the University of Montevallo (AL) on Tuesday night and travels to Americus for a three-game series at Georgia Southwestern State University on Friday through Sunday.


AYDEN RAY — USC Lancaster (So., Woodland HS) … went 1-for-9 with one walk and scored one run last week in three home losses to USC Union. The Lancers (22-23, 9-16 Carolina Junior College Conference) play a three-game series Saturday and Sunday at Gaston College (NC). 


DREW ROTHSCHILD — Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (Sr., Cartersville HS) … went 3-for-17, including one double, one walk, one run scored, one sac fly, and three RBI as the Stallions beat visiting Albany State University on April 14 and won three games last Friday and Saturday at Blue Mountain Christian University (MS). ABAC (33-14, 17-7 Southern States Athletic Conference) hosts a three-game conference series on Thursday and Friday with the University of Tennessee Southern.


HANK SMITH — University of West Georgia (R-Jr., Cartersville HS) … made one start and appeared in four games last week as the Wolves lost at Georgia State and dropped all three games at Jacksonville University (FL).  The UWG catcher was 0-for-4 at the plate. The Wolves (11-29, 8-10 Atlantic Sun Conference) welcome Kennesaw State University on Tuesday night and host three games with Stetson University on Friday through Sunday.


DAVIS WILLIAMS — University of West Georgia (R-Jr., Cartersville HS) … made two pitching appearances at Jacksonville University last weekend. He allowed three earned runs on four hits and one walk in a 2/3-inning appearance last Friday. Williams then worked 2-1/3 shutout innings on Sunday, allowing three hits and one hit batter. The Wolves lost both games, with Williams taking no decision. West Georgia (11-29, 8-10 Atlantic Sun Conference) welcomes Kennesaw State University on Tuesday night and hosts three games with Stetson University on Friday through Sunday.


SAWYER WILSON — Columbus State University (So., Cartersville HS) … collected his fifth pitching win of the season last Friday in a 13-1 home win over Augusta University. Wilson gave up one earned run on eight hits with no walks and three strikeouts in seven innings. The victory improved his season record to 5-3. The Cougars (27-16, 18-9 Peach Belt Conference) visit the University of Montevallo (AL) on Tuesday and visit Georgia Southwestern State University for a three-game conference series on Friday through Sunday.
