Athletes Beyond Bartow: Barnett collects another pitching win

Former Cartersville High Purple Hurricane Mason Barnett earned his third pitching win of the season last week and he continues his MiLB work in the Kansas City Royals organization. Meanwhile, another former Canes standout, Anthony Seigler, remains on the injured list with the Yankees' Double-A affiliate Somerset Patriots.

MASON BARNETT — Quad Cities River Bandits (KC Royals High A affiliate; 2nd-yr. pro; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … picked up his third pitching victory of the year last Tuesday night (July 18) as the River Bandits won at the Beloit Sky Carp, 6-4. The 6-foot right-hander made a six-inning scoreless start scattering just two hits and a pair of walks while facing 21 batters. He struck out three. Now 3-5 for the season in 14 starts and 70 innings pitched, the Royals’ third-round pick has 79 strikeouts and a 3.47 ERA. Quad Cities was 3-3 at Beloit last week and is 9-15 in the second-half standings of the Midwest League’s West Division. The Bandits (41-49 overall) host the Lansing Lugnuts in a six-game series this Tuesday through Sunday to close out the July schedule.

ANTHONY SEIGLER — Somerset Patriots (NY Yankees Double-A affiliate; 6th-yr. pro; Cartersville HS) … has been on the Patriots’ Injured List since June 29 and has not seen action in a game since June 25. The switch-hitting catcher and Yankees’ 2018 first-round selection has struggled with injuries during his professional career. He has 133 official at-bats this season with a .173 batting average, one homer, and 16 RBIs. In 774 career MiLB at-bats, he has a .217 batting average with 13 homers and 100 RBIs. Somerset (53-35 overall) won the first-half standings of the Northeast Division in the Eastern League and has secured a playoff berth. The Patriots are 11-9 in the second-half race, 3-½ games behind Portland.
