Athletes Beyond Bartow: Beasley and Renegades open UFL slate while local MiLB players begin seasons this week

Former Adairsville High star, Clemson All-American, and Atlanta Falcons Pro Bowler Vic Beasley, Jr. made his United Football League debut last Saturday with the Arlington Renegades. The 31-year-old outside linebacker lands with the Texas team after pro stops with the Falcons, Tennessee Titans, Las Vegas Raiders, and Vegas Vipers of the XFL.


Former Hurricane Buck Brumlow helped lead the Georgia Bulldogs to a tournament championship in college golf and coming up this weekend, three former Cartersville High baseball standouts open the 2024 MiLB season with their respective clubs. 



NBA


ASHTON HAGANS — Portland Trailblazers — (4th yr. pro; Cartersville native; Kentucky; Newton HS) … saw 16 minutes of court time and scored 10 points with three assists and two rebounds last Wednesday during a 120-106 loss at the Atlanta Hawks. Last Monday, he saw 23 minutes on the floor and scored eight points with four rebounds and three assists. Portland (19-55) plays at Charlotte on Wednesday, at Washington on Friday, and at Boston on Sunday night.



BASKETBALL SUPER LEAGUE


A.J. MOSBY, JR. — Sudbury Five (6th-yr. pro; Alcorn State; Cartersville HS) … in a 136-126 home win over the Lebanon Leprechauns, Mosby scored 33 points with seven assists and seven rebounds. The Five (13-10) host the Newfoundland Rogues on Saturday afternoon and the Glass City Wranglers on Sunday.



UFL


VIC BEASLEY, JR. — Arlington Renegades (10th-yr. pro; Clemson; Adairsville HS) … in both teams’ UFL opener, Beasley had four tackles (two solo) including one sack in the Renegades 27-14 home loss this past Saturday to the Birmingham Stallions. Arlington (0-1) plays at the St. Louis Battlehawks on Saturday night.



MiLB


MASON BARNETT — Northwest Arkansas Naturals (3rd-yr. pro; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … was the starting pitcher for the Kansas City Royals’ affiliates in the inaugural Spring Training Breakout games. The Royals' prospects defeated the Milwaukee Brewers’ prospects 4-3. Barnett pitched 1-⅔ innings and allowed two runs (only one earned) on two hits and three walks. The Double-A Naturals begin their regular season schedule this weekend with a home series against the Tulsa Drillers.


LOGAN MARTIN — Columbia Fireflies (2nd-yr. pro; Kentucky; Cartersville HS) … Columbia, a Class A affiliate in the Carolina League, opens the 2024 season this weekend with a series at the Augusta Greenjackets.


ANTHONY SEIGLER — Somerset Patriots (7th-yr. pro; Cartersville HS) … the Double-A Patriots will open the 2024 schedule at home this weekend in a series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels.



TENNIS


EMILY SURCEY — Samford University (Jr., Cass HS) … in a 5-2 team victory last Friday over visiting Western Carolina University, Surcey, and doubles partner Grace Keller, lost their Line 2 set 4-6 and Surcey lost her Line 2 singles match, 4-6, 4-6. Samford (6-10) hosts Chattanooga on Thursday and plays at East Tennessee State on Sunday.



TRACK AND FIELD


ERIC TOVIAVE — Belmont University (So., Cartersville HS) … finished 28th (56.751) in the 400-meter hurdles last weekend at the 96th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. The Bruins run Friday and Saturday at the Ole Miss Joe Walker Invitational.



GOLF


BUCK BRUMLOW — University of Georgia (Jr., Cartersville HS) … shot an even-par 210 total and tied for 11th overall helping the Bulldogs to a team title at The Goodwin hosted at San Francisco’s TPC Harding Park. The tournament was last Thursday through Saturday. 22nd-ranked UGA edged Utah by one shot to win the tournament. 44th-ranked Stanford finished third followed by 8th-ranked Tennessee and 15th-ranked Georgia Tech in the 10-team field. Brumlow carded rounds of 69-73-68 on the par-70, 7,193-yard TPC Harding Park course. Georgia will close out the regular season in Naples, Florida at the Calusa Cup hosted by Iowa on April 7-9.



SOFTBALL


LAINEY BAKER — Union University (So., Woodland HS) … tossed a completed game, one-hit shutout last Wednesday in a Bulldogs’ 3-0 win at Henderson State (Ark.). Baker fanned seven and improved to 8-5 in the circle this season with a 2.07 ERA. Union (22-14, 11-7 Gulf South Conference) visits the University of West Florida for a three-game series on Friday and Saturday.


HAYLEE DISHMON — Georgia Highlands College (Fr., Cass HS) … in four games last week, Dishmon was 5-for-12 at the plate with a walk and two RBIs. She also stole five bases as the Lady Chargers won twice at ABAC and lost twice at Gordon State College. GHC (9-22, 6-6 GCAA) hosts Georgia Military College for a doubleheader on Saturday.


ANSLEY EVANS — Reinhardt University (Jr., Woodland HS) … was 0-for-4 at the plate with two walks and one RBI last Wednesday as the Eagles split a doubleheader at Georgia Gwinnett College. Reinhardt (21-7, 10-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference) hosts a doubleheader with Truett-McConnell University on Wednesday, Columbia International University on Friday, and the University of Pikeville (Ky.) on Saturday.


MEGAN GREGORY — Campbell University (Fr., Adairsville HS) … was tagged with the pitching loss last Saturday in a 5-4 home loss to Monmouth University. Gregory started in the circle and allowed three earned runs (five total) on five hits and two walks in three innings. The Camels went 4-1 for the week with two wins over North Carolina Central and two over Monmouth. Campbell (18-16-1, 8-4) entertains East Carolina on Tuesday before visiting Hampton University this weekend for a Coastal Athletic Association series.


ALYSSA JARRETT — Piedmont University (Fr., Adairsville HS) … made three starts and appeared in four Lions’ wins last week over St. Olaf College and Covenant College. Jarrett was 2-for-6 at the plate with one walk. She was also hit by a pitch twice. Piedmont (14-11, 8-0 Collegiate Conference of the South) carries a 10-game win streak into a doubleheader on Friday at Belhaven University (Miss.).


ERYN LEE — Reinhardt University (So., Cass HS) … in a doubleheader split last Wednesday at Georgia Gwinnett College, Lee was 1-for-5 at the plate. The Eagles host Truett-McConnell, Columbia International, and the University of Pikeville (Ky.) on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.


RACHAEL LEE — Gulf Coast State (So., Cass HS) … went 3-for-7 last Thursday in a pair of wins at Tallahassee CC. She walked once and scored three runs. The 13th-ranked Commodores (31-9, 5-3 FSCCAA) visit Pensacola State CC on Wednesday for a doubleheader and host Chipola College for two games on Saturday.


AVA PERKINS — Lee University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … appeared in losses last Wednesday and Friday against No. 1 ranked North Georgia at home and at Alabama-Huntsville. She drew a walk as a pinch hitter against UNG and retired two batters in a second-inning pitching performance at UAH. She allowed three earned runs on three hits and three walks in the circle. The Flames (13-18, 8-10 Gulf South Conference) visit Young Harris College for two games on Wednesday and host the University of West Alabama on Saturday and Sunday for a three-game conference series.


HOPE SHORT — Shorter University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … was 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter last Friday in a 9-3 loss at the University of West Florida. The Lady Hawks (2-32, 1-20 Gulf South Conference) host No. 1-ranked North Georgia for a doubleheader on Tuesday and the University of Montevallo for three conference games on Friday and Saturday.


ALEXA VARNER — Shorter University (Sr., Adairsville HS) … in three losses at the University of West Florida last Friday and Saturday Varner was 1-for-6 at the plate. Shorter (2-32, 1-20 Gulf South Conference) has home games with North Georgia on Tuesday and Montevallo on Friday and Saturday.


ALEXIS WOODS — Tennessee State University (Fr., Cass HS) … went 2-for-9 with one walk, one double, one run scored, and one RBI as the Lady Tigers won one of three home games this past weekend with UT-Martin. TSU (16-16, 7-5 Ohio Valley Conference) plays a three-game conference series at Eastern Illinois on Saturday and Sunday.


JENNA YOUNG — Covenant College (Fr., Adairsville HS) … went 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter in a 24-4 home loss last Monday to Belhaven University (Miss.). The Scots (3-19, 0-6 Collegiate Conference of the South) host a doubleheader with Huntingdon College on Saturday.



BASEBALL


CURT BONNER — LaGrange College (So., Cartersville HS) … in two starts and three appearances last week, Bonner was 2-for-8 and scored one run. The Panthers lost a game to Birmingham Southern and split games at Covenant College. LaGrange (16-7, 4-2 Collegiate Conference of the South) plays at Oglethorpe University on Tuesday.


CADEN CARROLL — Kennesaw State University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … faced three batters and allowed three earned runs on one hit, one walk, and one hit batsman last Friday in a 14-2 home loss to Austin Peay. Kennesaw (15-11, 6-3 Atlantic Sun Conference) visits Mercer on Tuesday night and plays a three-game conference series at Stetson this weekend.


EASTIN ELLIOTT — Covenant College (R-Fr., Cartersville HS) … was entered off the Scots’ bench last Tuesday and Friday in losses at Berry and at home vs. LaGrange. Covenant (10-15, 3-3 Collegiate Conference of the South) hosts Berry on Tuesday and Belhaven University (Miss.) this weekend for a three-game conference series.


KENNY JINKS — Wheeling University (R-Sr., Woodland HS) … made a pitching start last Friday at home against Concord University with no decision in an eventual 6-5 win. Jinks pitched into the seventh inning (6-⅓ innings) and allowed five earned runs on nine hits and two walks. The Cardinals (16-10, 6-6 Mountain East Conference) visit Walsh University (Ohio) on Tuesday and travel to Notre Dame College (Ohio) on Saturday and Sunday for a three-game conference series.


COLT McKIBBEN — Lee University (So., Cartersville HS) … in two relief appearances last week on Wednesday at Tusculum University and Saturday at Alabama-Huntsville, McKibben worked 3-⅔ innings allowing three earned runs on five hits and five walks. The 15th-ranked Flames went 1-1 in those games and 3-1 for the week. Lee (25-9, 14-4) hosts Trevecca Nazarene on Tuesday and the University of West Alabama on Friday and Saturday for a three-game conference series.


SAM MELTON — Rockingham CC (So., Cartersville HS) … was 0-for-2 with one walk this past Saturday in an 8-0 loss at Camp CC. Rockingham (11-23, 5-9 NJCAA Region 10) plays a three-game, home-and-home series with Caldwell Tech CC on Saturday and Sunday.


DREW ROTHSCHILD — Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (So., Cartersville HS) … in four games last week against Andrew College, he hit safely in each game and was 7-for-16 with a walk, one double, and seven RBIs. The Stallions (12-18, 4-4 GCAA) play at South Georgia State on Tuesday night and will host games with the Hawks on Thursday and Saturday.


TREY SCOTT — Alabama A&M University (Jr., Cass HS) … made pitching appearances last week at UAB on Tuesday and at Bethune-Cookman on Saturday. Tuesday was a no-decision and he was saddled with the pitching loss on Saturday. In the two games, Scott worked 3-⅔ innings and allowed five earned runs on seven hits and eight walks. He struck out two. The Bulldogs (3-23, 1-8 SWAC) visit North Alabama on Wednesday and will host Mississippi Valley State for a three-game conference series on Friday through Sunday.


HANK SMITH — Jacksonville State University (R-Fr., Cartersville HS) … made a defensive appearance at catcher last Tuesday in a 13-3 loss at Auburn. The Gamecocks (9-18, 0-6 Conference USA) host Troy University on Wednesday and Florida International on Friday through Sunday for a three-game conference series.


SCOTTY SMITH — Covenant College (Jr., Woodland HS) … made pitching starts last Monday and Saturday with a loss at Huntingdon College and a no-decision at home against LaGrange in an eventual win. Smith went six innings in each start allowing 11 earned runs on 16 hits and six walks. He struck out six and hit one batter. The Scots (10-15, 3-3 Collegiate Conference of the South) host Berry College on Tuesday and a three-game conference series with Belhaven University (Miss.) on Friday and Saturday.


STEVEN SPELL — Young Harris College (Grad student, Cass HS) … went 4-for-17 with three walks, one hit by pitch, four runs scored, one sac fly, and two RBIs as the Mountain Lions finished a 1-4 week. The lone win was at Francis Marion last Monday. They also lost at home against Mars Hill and had three losses at North Greenville. YHC (25-9, 12-6 Carolinas Conference), ranked No. 9, visits Tusculum University on Wednesday before hosting a three-game conference series with King University (Tenn.) on Saturday and Sunday.


PRESTON WELCHEL — Cumberland University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … in three losses at 3rd-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College last Friday and Saturday, Welchel was 4-for-11 with two walks, two runs scored, and two RBIs. The Phoenix (17-16, 2-3 Mid-South Conference) has a doubleheader at 21st-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan on Wednesday and hosts a three-game conference series on Friday and Saturday with 22nd-ranked Freed-Hardeman University.


COHEN WILBANKS — Georgia Gwinnett College (Jr., Cartersville HS) … made three starts last week and went 3-for-9 at the plate with two walks, one run scored, and two RBIs as the 3rd-ranked Grizzlies beat Tennessee Wesleyan on Monday and Cumberland (Tenn.) on Friday and Saturday. GGC (30-5, 5-0 Continental Athletic Conference) visits Bryan College (Tenn.) for a doubleheader on Friday.


JORDAN WILKIE — Augusta University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … came off the bench in two games last week — home wins over USC Aiken and Columbus State — and went 0-for-2 with one walk at the plate. The Jaguars (21-14, 10-5 Peach Belt Conference) play a three-game conference series at North Georgia on Friday through Sunday.
