Athletes Beyond Bartow: Collegiate softball, baseball updates
The 2020 college baseball and softball schedules are well underway and this week's review of our local Bartow County athletes in those two sports includes updates on 18 different contributors with their respective programs around the country.
BASEBALL
LEVI AYERS — Georgia Highlands CC (So., RHP, Cartersville HS)… made relief appearances against Bryan College JV last Tuesday and Lincoln Trail CC Friday. He did not allow a run and recorded one strikeout in an 11-0 win over Bryan. Ayers yielded two earned runs on a walk and two hits in Friday’s 6-1 loss to Lincoln Trail. Georgia Highlands (10-3) hosts Cleveland State CC (TN) Tuesday, Lake Land CC (IL) in a doubleheader Thursday, and Three Rivers CC (MO) in a three-game series Saturday and Sunday.
MASON BARNETT — Auburn University (Fr., RHP, Cartersville HS)… made his college debut Saturday with the Tigers in a home 7-3 win over Illinois-Chicago. Barnett faced eight batters and allowed three earned runs on a walk and four hits. He fanned two. Auburn (4-0) hosts Oakland University (MI) Tuesday and has a three-game home series with UCF this Friday through Sunday.
BAILEY CAMPBELL — Young Harris College (Jr., 1B, Cass HS)… was 0-for-1 with a walk in a start as designated hitter Saturday as the Mountain Lions won 1-0 to complete a three-game sweep of visiting Albany State. Campbell also had an unsuccessful pinch hitting appearance in Friday’s 3-2 win. YHC (6-1) plays at Tusculum University (TN) Tuesday in a final tune-up before Peach Belt Conference play begins Saturday and Sunday with a three-game set at Georgia Southwestern State.
CLIFTON DEMPSEY — Toccoa Falls College (Sr., SS, Cartersville HS)… the Screamin’ Eagles’ shortstop was 1-for-7 with one RBI in a pair of losses to Reinhardt University Wednesday at LakePoint in Emerson. He was then 4-for-9 with a double, two walks, two runs, and one RBI as Toccoa Falls split two games with Columbia International University Friday and Saturday at Georgia Gwinnett College. Dempsey was also 2-for-7 in losses Friday and Saturday against the host and NAIA 5th-ranked Grizzlies at GGC. Toccoa Falls (3-6) hosts NAIA 22nd-ranked Middle Georgia State Tuesday and travels to University of South Carolina Beaufort for a three-game series Friday and Saturday.
CARRINGTON EVANS — Augusta University (Jr., OF, Cartersville HS)… had a rough week at the plate going 0-for-11 in three starts but the Jaguars picked up their first win of the season Saturday over Lake Erie College in games played at Anderson University (SC). August (1-8) plays at Erskine College Wednesday and opens Peach Belt Conference play Friday through Sunday in a three-game series at Lander University.
LANE GRIFFITH — University of West Georgia (Sr., C, Adairsville HS)… in three starts at Lee University this weekend, Griffith walked once, scored a run, and drove in one run but was 0-for-11 at the plate. West Georgia won two of three games improving to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the Gulf South Conference. The Wolves play at North Georgia Wednesday and host a three-game conference series with University of Montevallo Saturday and Sunday.
HUNTER HICE — Georgia College (So., 1B, Adairsville HS)… went 1-for-4 in both games of a weekend conference series with Francis Marion University. The Bobcats won 6-1 Friday but lost 7-4 Saturday. Sunday’s game was cancelled. Georgia College (8-1, 4-1 Peach Belt Conference) hosts Savannah State University Tuesday and will entertain Claflin University in a three-game weekend series.
KENNY JINKS — Shorter University (So., LHP, Woodland HS)… was called on Friday out of the bullpen in the eighth inning and allowed a base hit to the only batter he faced during a 5-1 loss at Valdosta State. The Hawks split two games with the Blazers with Sunday’s game cancelled due to weather. Shorter (7-1, 1-1 Gulf South Conference) hosts Emmanuel College in non-conference action Tuesday and Oakland City University (IN) Saturday and Sunday in a three-game series.
LOGAN MARTIN — Sewanee: University of the South (Fr., RHP, Cartersville HS)… made his first start and his second college appearance Sunday against Carroll University (WI). Martin allowed one, unearned run on a walk and two hits in five innings of work. He struck out six in a non-decision outing. The Tigers rallied in the bottom of the ninth to win 4-3. Sewanee (4-0-1) hosts Dominican (IL) Saturday and Sunday in a three-game series.
DEVIN WARNER - Grayson CC (So., OF, Cartersville HS)… went 3-for-14 with three doubles, two runs scored, and one RBI as the 17th-ranked Vikings won four games during the week. Grayson had wins a pair of wins over both San Jacinto-North and Alvin CC. Grayson (5-1) hosts Navarro CC Tuesday, Paris CC Thursday, and travels to Seminole State (OK) for a doubleheader Saturday.
PRESTON WELCHEL — University of South Alabama (Fr., OF, Cartersville HS)… made his collegiate debut as a pinch hitter Saturday against Campbell University in the seventh inning of an 8-8 game at the time. He went down on strikes, but the Jaguars rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning to top the visiting Camels 12-10. USA (2-1) plays a two-game series Tuesday and Wednesday at Vanderbilt before hosting the South Alabama Invitational Friday through Sunday at Stanky Field.
CAUY WILLIAMS — Wallace State-Dothan CC (So., RHP, Woodland HS)… made a pair of appearances this week recording one out in each. He gave up two earned runs on two hits and two walks Wednesday in a 19-6 win at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College when he worked in the fifth inning. He then entered in the seventh inning and yielded four earned runs on two walks, a hit, and a home run in Saturday’s 15-8 home win over St. Petersburg CC. Wallace State-Dothan (4-3) plays Shelton State and Gulf Coast State Friday at Gulf Coast. The Governors will then host Dyersburg State Saturday and Columbia State Sunday.
SOFTBALL
COLBI BALLARD — Shorter University (Fr., OF, Cartersville HS)… entered in the fourth inning as a pinch runner Saturday at Valdosta State and scored a run in the Hawks’ 10-4 loss. Shorter (0-8, 0-3 Gulf South Conference) plays Catawba College and Columbus State University Sunday in Blairsville.
SKYLAR CHAPPELL — Cottey College (Fr., C, Woodland HS)… made a pinch hitting appearance in a 3-2 win Tuesday over visiting Bethel (KS). Cottey is 5-1 following a Sunday home doubleheader split with William Woods University, but not all game boxscores were immediately available. The Comets, a new member of NAIA, are scheduled to host Oklahoma Wesleyan Tuesday before playing in the Queen City Bash Friday through Sunday in Springfield, Missouri.
PRESLY EDWARDS — Wesleyan College (Fr., C, Cartersville HS)… was 0-for-5 at the plate but drove in one run as the Wolves split a doubleheader with Belhaven at home Saturday. Wesleyan (1-1) plays a doubleheader at Middle Georgia State Tuesday, hosts William Peace in a doubleheader Saturday, and Sewanee: University of the South in a twinbill Sunday.
SARAH FOX — Agnes Scott College (So., SS, Cass HS)… had a hit and walked once in a 9-1 loss to Brenau University Saturday. ASC (0-2) plays a doubleheader at LaGrange College Wednesday, hosts Point University Friday, and Sewanee: University of the South Saturday.
HANNAH KNAPP — Talladega College (Jr., 1B, Adairsville HS)… went 3-for-8 in the final three games of four played Friday and Saturday against Missouri Baptist and Blue Mountain College in Mississippi. The Tornadoes (0-4) host Cumberland University (TN) Monday before traveling to Tennessee Wesleyan Wednesday, and Faulkner University (AL) Thursday.
PARIS POSTON — Columbus State University (So., OF, Cartersville HS)… went 1-for-2 with one RBI in Friday’s 9-1 home win over Albany State. Poston was also 0-for-3 Saturday in a 3-0 win over Union University (TN). CSU (5-5) has won four straight heading into Wednesday’s doubleheader at Albany State. The Cougars will also play games this weekend at the Young Harris Tournament against Trevecca Nazarene, Catawba, and Shorter.
HANNAH TODD — Kansas University (Jr., P, Cartersville HS)… made a start Friday in Clearwater, Florida against 15th-ranked Georgia and was tagged with the pitching loss. Todd went two innings in the circle allowing six earned runs on four hits and three walks in an eventual 11-0 loss. She struck out two of 14 batters faced. Kansas is schedule to play Friday through Sunday at the Boerner Invitational in Arlington, Texas. The Jayhawks (2-8) will face UT-San Antonio, Rutgers, and two additional games in the three day event.
