Athletes Beyond Bartow: Howard wraps up ninth pro season; Forristall added to Browns' active roster

Cartersville native Sam Howard concluded his ninth season as a professional this past week with a scoreless outing for the Toledo Mud Hens at the Iowa Cubs. The lefty started the year in extended spring training for Pittsburgh and eventually made three 2022 appearances for the MLB Pirates. He was later acquired by the Detroit Tigers’ organization and finished the year with the Triple-A affiliate in Toledo.


Meanwhile in the NFL, former Purple Hurricanes Trevor Lawrence and Miller Forristall were in action with their respective clubs.


Forristall, who has been on the Cleveland practice squad, was signed to the active roster this past week and participated in the Browns’ game at the Atlanta Falcons. Lawrence threw a pair of touchdowns Sunday, but his Jacksonville Jaguars lost at the Philadelphia Eagles.


At the collegiate level, two dozen local athletes across the country were active in football, cross country, volleyball, golf, and soccer.


NFL

MILLER FORRISTALL — Cleveland Browns (NFL, 2nd-yr. pro; Alabama; Cartersville HS) … was moved from the Browns’ practice squad to the Cleveland roster last week and saw action for the second straight week. He was not targeted and did not record any stats in a 23-20 loss Sunday at Atlanta. The Browns (2-2) host the Los Angeles Chargers Sunday at 1 p.m.


TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL, 2nd-yr. pro; Clemson; Cartersville HS) … was 11-for-23 passing Sunday for 174 yards and two touchdowns in a rainy 29-21 loss at the Philadelphia Eagles. Lawrence also rushed for seven yards on a pair of attempts. He had a first quarter 4-yard touchdown pass to Jamal Agnew to give the Jags a 14-0 lead. His other scoring strike also went to Agnew with 7:19 remaining in the game. Jacksonville (2-2) host the winless Houston Texans Sunday at 1 p.m.



PRO BASEBALL

SAM HOWARD — Toledo Mud Hens (9th yr. pro; Triple-A Detroit Tigers organization; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS) … in his final appearance of 2022 last Thursday, the 29-year-old earned his eleventh hold of the season with a four-out appearance across the sixth and seventh innings of a 7-5 win at the Iowa Cubs. The southpaw allowed two hits but struck out two. Howard made three MLB appearances in 2022 with the Pittsburgh Pirates after rehab appearances with Bradenton and Indianapolis of the Pirates’ organization. In May he was claimed off waivers by the Detroit Tigers and sent to the Toledo Mud Hens. Howard completed his 2022 MiLB season with a 2-2 record and 3.11 ERA in 43 appearances. He worked 37.2 innings and struck out 44. Toledo (87-63) finished second in the International League West Division and did not qualify for the post-season.


COLLEGE FOOTBALL

KOLBE BENHAM — Marist College (R-Fr., Cartersville HS) … had a fumble recovery last Saturday with just over one minute remaining in the game during a 38-24 home loss to St. Thomas (MN). The Red Foxes (1-3, 1-1 Pioneer Football League) head to Florida Saturday to take on the Stetson Hatters.


HAYDEN CAGLE — Berry College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … a starter on the Vikings’ offensive line in a 24-10 loss last Saturday at Birmingham-Southern College. The offensive unit produced 319 total yards (154 rushing/165 passing). Berry (2-2, 0-1 Southern Athletic Association) hosts Rhodes College Saturday night.

JONATHAN CRUZ — University of Mississippi (R-Sr., Cartersville HS) … made a 53-yard field goal in the second quarter and was true on what turned out to be the game-winning field goal in the third quarter from 26 yards as the Rebels defeated then 7th-ranked Kentucky last Saturday afternoon 22-19. Cruz also made both PAT attempts and averaged 58.8 yards on five kickoffs with one touchback. Ole Miss (5-0, 1-0) plays at Vanderbilt Saturday afternoon.


CARLOS DEL RIO-WILSON — Syracuse University (R-Fr., Cartersville HS) … ran twice for 11 yards and completed his only pass attempt for a five yard gain as the Orange blanked Wagner last Saturday, 59-0. Syracuse (5-0, 2-0 ACC) hosts ??? = ranked N.C. State Saturday.


DYLAN FORMAN — Shorter University (R-Jr., Woodland HS) … was on the participation report but did not accumulate any stats in the Hawks’ 37-14 loss last Saturday at West Alabama. Shorter (2-3, 0-2 Gulf South Conference) plays at Mississippi College this Saturday afternoon.


JACOREY JOHNS — Wake Forest University (R-Jr., Cartersville HS) … continued his season streak of at least one tackle in each game this season by recording one tackle assist in the Demon Deacons’ 31-21 win last Saturday at Florida State. Wake Forest (4-1, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) hosts Army this Saturday night.


LA’KWAYME JUPITER — North Carolina Wesleyan (So., Cartersville HS) … was listed as a participant but had no stat line as the Battling Bishops beat visiting LaGrange College last Friday night, 37-22. North Carolina Wesleyan (2-3, 2-0 USA South Athletic Conference) travels to play at Belhaven University (NC) Saturday afternoon.


IAN LOWE — Shorter University (Fr., Cass HS) … saw action in last Saturday’s loss at West Alabama but did not record any stats. Shorter (2-3, 0-2 Gulf South Conference) travels to Mississippi College this Saturday.


ANDREW NGUYEN — Berry College (Fr., Cass HS) … recorded one solo tackle in the Vikings’ 24-10 loss last Saturday at Birmingham-Southern College. Berry (2-2, 0-1 Southern Athletic Association) entertains Rhodes College Saturday night.


SAM PHILLIPS — University of Tennessee-Chattanooga (So., Cartersville HS) … made four catches for 41 yards as the Mocs won last Saturday at East Tennessee State 24-16. Chattanooga (4-1, 2-0 Southern Conference) has a bye week before hosting VMI October 15.


COURTNEY SLOCUM — Mars Hill University (Jr., Adairsville HS) … saw action but did not record any stats in a 17-14 home loss last Thursday against Limestone. The Lions (2-2, 2-1 South Atlantic Conference) travel to Erskine College Saturday.


EVAN SLOCUM — Wake Forest University (So., Cartersville HS) … made three tackles in last Saturday’s 31-21 win at Florida State. Wake Forest (4-1, 1-1 ACC) steps out of conference play this Saturday night when the Demon Deacons host Army.


KALEB SPEIGHTS — Shorter University (So., Cass HS) … kicked off three times for a 60.3 yard average this past Saturday in the Hawks’ 37-14 loss at West Alabama. Shorter (2-3, 0-2 Gulf South Conference) plays at Mississippi College Saturday afternoon.


BRANDON WADE — University of West Florida (Grad student, Cartersville HS) … had one tackle and was credited with one quarterback hurry in the Argonauts’ 34-31 home win Satuday over North Greenville. UWF (3-1, 1-1 Gulf South Conference) plays at West Georgia Saturday.


CROSS COUNTRY

BILL ARCHER — University of Montevallo (So., Cartersville HS) … finished 213th of 426 runners at the 8K Louisiville Classic last Friday. His time of 26:30 was fourth for his team as the Falcons placed 27th of 47 teams in the Blue Division which was won by Grand Valley State. Montevallo competes next at the UAB Blazer Classic on Friday, October 14.


RYLEE EVANS — Western Kentucky University (Fr., Woodland HS) … was the top finishers for the Hilltoppers and placed 47th individually in the Blue Division at the 29th annual Live in the Lou Classic last Friday on the E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park 5K course. Evans completed the race in 18:41.10 in a field that included 422 competitors. Western Kentucky finished 28th of 48 teams. The team race was won by Taylor Universitiy. The next race for WKU will be the Blazer Classic October 14 at Alabama-Birmingham.


McKENNA TRAPHEAGEN — Georgia Tech (So., Woodland HS) … finished 222nd (21:36.9) of 427 individual runners at the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University last Friday in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Georgia Tech was 14th of 46 teams in a race won by University of North Carolina. Up next for the Yellow Jackets will be the Penn State National Open Friday, October 14.


VOLLEYBALL

VANESSA JOHNSON — Truett McConnell University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … saw action but recorded no stats in the Bears’ three set sweep at Columbia College (SC) last Tuesday. TMU (10-11, 5-4 Appalachian Athletic Conference) hosts Reinhardt University Tuesday night and will play Carolina University and St. Andrews University Saturday in Laurinburg, North Carolina.


KYA PERKINSON — Piedmont University (Fr., Cass HS) … had one service ace, one dig, and one block last Wednesday night in the Lions’ 25-9, 25-15, 25-22 home win over Agnes Scott. Piedmont (3-11, 3-3 Collegiate Conference of the South) hosts Huntingdon College and Berea College Saturday.


MARIA PILIPOSYANS — Reinhardt University (Fr., Cass HS) … totaled 19 kills, 7 digs, and 8 blocks across three matches last week as the Eagles beat visiting Brenau last Tuesday, won at Tennessee Wesleyan last Thursday, but lost at Bryan Saturday. Reinhardt (8-10, 6-3 Appalachian Athletic Conference) plays at Truett McConnell Tuesday and hosts Columbia University and Columbia International University Friday and Saturday.


GOLF

BUCK BRUMLOW — University of Georgia (So., Cartersville HS) … finished tied for 44th individually in the medal play portion of the Southeastern Conference Match Play Championship conducted September 25-27 on the par-70, 7,204-yard Old Overton Club in Vestavia Hills, Alabama. Brumlow fired rounds of 72-66-74 (212) for a 2-over-par total. UGA was the No. 6-seed following 54-holes of stroke play and lost to No. 3-seed Alabama in the first match play round, 3-2. Brumlow dropped his match 3-up to Alabama’s J.P. Cave. The Bulldogs will return to action Oct. 3-4 in the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.


CHANC WILLIS — Reinhardt University (So., Cartersville HS) … tied for 19th place individually in the weather-shortened Invite at Innisbrook September 26 in Innisbrook, Florida. Willis shot 74-74 on the par-71, 7,015-yard Copperhead Course for the low score for the Eagles. Reinhardt placed 12th of 17 teams with Keiser University winning the event with a 576 total. Reinhardt shot 607. The Eagles travel to Venore, Tennessee this weekend for the Tennessee Wesleyan Invitational on the Links of Kahite.



SOCCER

ABBIE CRAIG — Reinhardt University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … entered as a reserve for seven minutes Saturday and took one shot in the Eagles’ 9-0 home win over St. Andrews University (NC). Reinhardt (7-3, 7-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference) hosts Bryan College Wednesday night and travels to Columbia University Saturday.


RUSSELL SHEALY — Syracuse University (R-Sr., Cartersville resident, Darlington HS) … made four saves and earned his sixth shutout this season as the Orange blanked Virginia Tech last Friday night, 3-0. Shealy is now 7-1-1 in net this season. Syracuse (8-1-1, 3-1 ACC) hosts Cornell Tuesday night and Wake Forest Friday night.
