Athletes Beyond Bartow: Lawrence, Forristall see preseason action; MiLB heads into final weeks

Athletes Beyond Bartow provides regular updates on local college and pro athletes. All former Cartersville Purple Hurricanes, Trevor Lawrence and Miller Forristall head into their final 2022 preseason games while Sam Howard and Anthony Seigler move into the final three weeks of the MiLB regular season.




 

NFL


TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (2nd yr. pro; NFL; Clemson; Cartersville HS) … in a pair of home preseason losses August 12 to the Cleveland Browns and this past Saturday to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the 22-year-old quarterback is 20-for-33 passing. He was 6-for-12 for 95 yards and one touchdown against the Browns in a 24-13 loss. He also had one rush attempt for 11 yards. In Saturday’s 16-15 loss, Lawrence was 14-for-21 through the air for 133 yards but no touchdowns. He had two rushing attempts for 13 yards. The Jaguars are 0-3 in the preseason and will finish the exhibition schedule against the Falcons in Atlanta this Saturday afternoon.


MILLER FORRISTALL — Cleveland Browns (2nd yr. pro; NFL; Alabama; Cartersville HS) … the 24-year-old tight end was targeted twice and had one catch for 11 yards August 12 during a 24-13 win at Jacksonville. The Browns are 1-1 in the preseason and will complete the exhibition schedule Saturday night at home against the Chicago Bears.



PRO BASEBALL

SAM HOWARD — Toledo Mud Hens (9th yr. pro; Triple-A Detroit Tigers organization; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS) … lowered his MiLB season ERA to 2.77 with scoreless appearances August 12 and 17. Working an inning and one-third August 12, the lefty walked one and struck out two in parts of the fourth and fifth innings during a 5-0 home loss to the Omaha Storm Chasers. Last Wednesday at the Columbus Clippers, the 29-year-old struck out one while working a scoreless sixth inning as the Mud Hens won 4-0. Howard is 1-2 in 28 MiLB appearances this season across 26 innings. He has 31 strikeouts. Toledo (61-54) is in third place in the International League’s West Division. The Mud Hens trail Nashville by 8.5 games and host a six game series with the Louisville Bats Tuesday through Sunday.


ANTHONY SEIGLER — Hudson Valley Renegades (5th yr. pro; High Class-A New York Yankees organization; Cartersville HS) … in five games this past week at the Brooklyn Cyclones, the 23 year old catcher/DH was 6-for-16 at the plate including one double, six walks, two RBIs, and five runs scored. He also stole his 16th base in Sunday’s win. For the season, Seigler has a .242 batting average with seven home runs and 35 RBIs in 269 official at bats. Hudson Valley (61-52 overall) is 27-20 in the second half standings and in first place by 1.5 games with just 18 games remaining in the regular season. The Renegades play a six game home series Tuesday through Sunday against the Hickory Crawdads.
