Athletes Beyond Bartow: Lawrence, Jags come up short at Indy
Former Cartersville High School quarterback Trevor Lawrence had only two incompletions Sunday in 22 pass attempts, but managed only 163 yards in Jacksonville’s 34-27 loss at the Indianapolis Colts. The Jags’ QB had one TD pass and added two short touchdown runs as Jacksonville slipped to 2-4.
Meanwhile in other NFL news, Cleveland tight end Miller Forristall has been reassigned to the Browns’ practice squad.

NFL
MILLER FORRISTALL — Cleveland Browns (NFL, 2nd-yr. pro; Alabama; Cartersville HS) … had spent time on the Browns’ practice squad earlier this season and had even been called up twice, but the tight end was waived after appearing in Cleveland’s game at Atlanta in Week 4. He has now been returned to the practice squad where he will continue his development. Cleveland (2-4) plays Sunday at the Baltimore Ravens.
TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL, 2nd-yr. pro; Clemson; Cartersville HS) completed 20 of 22 passes for 165 yards and one touchdown in Sunday’s 34-27 loss at the Indianapolis Colts. Lawrence also ran six times for 23 yards and two touchdowns in the defeat. His 1-yard keeper with 3:48 remaining in the first quarter gave the Jags a 7-0 lead. His 2-yard run early in the third quarter capped a 75-yard drive and put Jacksonville up 21-13 at the time. His 4-yard touchdown pass to Christian Kirk finished off a 10 minute drive in the fourth quarter and made the score 27-26, but the Colts scored with 0:17 remaining to pull out the win. Jacksonville (2-4) hosts the New York Giants Sunday.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
KOLBE BENHAM — Marist College (R-Fr., Cartersville HS) … saw action at safety last Saturday but did not record any stats in the Red Foxes 24-7 home loss to Dayton. Marist (2-4, 2-2 Pioneer Football League) plays at Butler Saturday.
BRYCE BURGESS — Reinhardt University (Sr., Adairsville HS) … had two rushing attempts for two yards Saturday in the NAIA 11th-ranked Eagles’ 45-21 win at Bluefield State (WV). Reinhardt (5-1, 2-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference) is off this Saturday and will host St. Andrews October 29.
HAYDEN CAGLE — Berry College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … a starter on the Vikings’ offensive line that helped produce 382 yards of total offense (221 rushing / 161 passing) in a 31-30 overtime victory at Centre College. Berry (4-2, 2-1) heads to San Antonio Saturday to face NCAA D-III 9th-ranked Trinity University in a Southern Athletic Association matchup.
JONATHAN CRUZ — University of Mississippi (R-Sr., Cartersville HS) … made a pair of field goals and was successful on all six extra point attempts last Saturday as 6th-ranked Ole Miss beat Auburn 48-34. Cruz made a 23-yard field goal in the third quarter and a 42-yarder in the fourth period. He also booted seven of his eight kickoffs for touchbacks. His other kickoff was a brilliant onside kick that was recovered by Ole Miss. The Rebels (7-0, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) play at LSU Saturday afternoon.
DYLAN FORMAN — Shorter University (R-Jr., Woodland HS) … had two tackles on punt coverage last Saturday in the Hawks’ 50-26 home loss to University of West Florida. Shorter (2-5, 0-4 Gulf South Conference) hosts a Thursday night matchup this week with 7th-ranked Delta State.
JORDAN FERGUSON — Middle Tennessee State (R-Sr., Cartersville HS) … had two tackles and broke up one pass in the Blue Raiders’ 35-17 home loss to Western Kentucky. MTSU (3-4, 0-3 Conference USA) has a bye week prior to playing at UTEP October 29.
JONAH GAMBILL — University of Memphis (So., Cartersville HS) …a starter on the Tigers’ offensive line that produced 491 yards of total offense (84 rushing / 407 passing) in a four overtime 47-45 loss at East Carolina. Memphis (4-3, 2-2 American Athletic Conference) has a conference game at Tulane Saturday afternoon.
GAVIN GEROS — Shorter University (So., Cartersville HS) … was a participant Saturday but had no stats in the Hawks’ 50-26 home loss to NCAA D-II 9th-ranked West Florida. Shorter (2-5, 0-4 Gulf South Conference) will look to snap a five game skid Thursday night at home against 7th-ranked Delta State.
TITUS JONES — Colorado State University (R-Jr., Woodland HS) … saw action in the Rams’ 17-13 home loss to Utah State last Saturday but recorded no stats. CSU (1-5, 1-1 Mountain West Conference) hosts Hawaii Saturday afternoon.
LA’KWAYME JUPITER — North Carolina Wesleyan (So., Cartersville HS) …a starter at nose guard, Jupiter had one tackle in a 34-33 home loss to Methodist University last Saturday. The Battling Bishops (2-5, 2-2 USA South Athletic Conference) play at Maryville (Tennessee) Saturday afternoon.
TYLER MARTIN — Berry College (Fr., Cass HS) … an offensive lineman, Martin was a participant last Saturday for the first time this season as the Vikings won at Centre College (KY), 31-30. Berry (4-2, 2-1 Southern Athletic Association) plays at 9th-ranked Trinity University (Texas) Saturday afternoon.
ANDREW NGUYEN — Berry College (Fr., Cass HS) … recorded no stats but was a participant for the Vikings in their 31-30 win last Saturday at Centre College. Berry (4-2, 2-1 SAA) travels to 9th-ranked Trinity University (TX) Saturday.
SAM PHILLIPS — UT-Chattanooga (So., Cartersville HS) … had three receptions last Saturday for 66 yards in the Mocs’ 41-13 home win over VMI. Phillips had a 19-yard catch in Chattanooga’s opening drive and a 32-yard catch late in the first quarter. He added a 15-yard reception in the second quarter. Phillips was targeted two other times with one of those plays resulting in a pass interference penalty. Chattanooga (5-1, 3-0 Southern Conference), ranked 9th in the FCS coaches poll, hosts Mercer Saturday afternoon.
JACOB RAY — Berry College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … had an 11-yard reception nullified by a penalty and was targeted two more times without another catch in the Vikings’ 31-30 win last Saturday at Centre College (Kentucky). Berry makes the journey to Trinity University (TX) Saturday afternoon.
COURTNEY SLOCUM — Mars Hill University (Jr., Adairsville HS) … was on the participation list last Saturday but recorded no stats in the Lions’ 49-14 home win over Emory & Henry. Mars Hill (4-2, 4-1 South Atlantic Conference) hosts Carson-Newman Saturday afternoon.
KALEB SPEIGHTS — Shorter University (So., Cass HS) … the placekicker had two kickoffs last Saturday for a 43.5 yard average in the Hawks’ 50-26 home loss to 9th-ranked West Florida. Shorter (2-5, 0-4 Gulf South Conference) looks for its first conference win Thursday night at home against 7th-ranked Delta State.
BRANDON WADE — University of West Florida (Grad Student, Cartersville HS) … the Argonauts’ defensive lineman saw action last Saturday in a 50-26 win at Shorter but did not record any stats. UWF (5-1, 3-1 Gulf South Conference), ranked No. 9 in D-II, hosts conference foe Mississippi College Saturday afternoon for homecoming.

McKENNA TRAPHEAGEN — Georgia Tech (So., Woodland HS) … placed 57th individually and sixth for her team in 22:07 as the Yellow Jackets finished fourth last Friday at the 6K Penn State University Open. Next for Georgia Tech is the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships October 28 in Earlysville, Virginia.
VOLLEYBALL
MARIA PILIPOSYANS — Reinhardt University (Fr., Cass HS) … totaled 21 kills, 13 blocks, and two digs in three matches last week. The Eagles lost in four sets at Tennessee Southern last Tuesday and had 3-0 wins Friday and Saturday at home over Union College (Kentucky) and Johnson University (Tennessee). Reinhardt (13-11, 11-3 Appalachian Athletic Conference) plays at Point University Tuesday and hosts St. Andrews University (North Carolina) Saturday.

BRADY CRAIG — Reinhardt University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … the Eagles’ defender played all 90 minutes in a 1-0 shutout at Columbia International University last Wednesday. Reinhardt (7-4-2, 6-1-2 Appalachian Athletic Conference) hosts Truett-McConnell University Wednesday and travels to Milligan University (Tennessee) Saturday.
HAVYN ISAAC — Young Harris College (Jr., Adairsville HS) … earned the win in goal this past Saturday as the Mountain Lions defeated Clayton State 2-1. Isaac was credited with three saves. YHC (4-9, 4-5 Peach Belt Conference) travels to St. Augustine Saturday for a conference match at Flagler College.
CHLOE RAVISH — Shorter University (Fr., Woodland HS) … was inserted as keeper in the second half last Saturday of the Hawks’ 10-0 loss at University of Montevallo. Ravish was charged with five goals against and made seven saves. Shorter (0-15-1, 0-11 Gulf South Conference) hosts Alabama-Huntsville Friday night and West Alabama Sunday afternoon.
RUSSELL SHEALY — Syracuse University (R-Sr., Cartersville resident; Darlington HS) … earned his ninth and tenth wins in goal last week with a 6-1 home win over Loyola Maryland and a 2-1 ACC victory at Louisville. Shealy had five saves against Loyola and two in the win over 11th-ranked Louisville. Syracuse (11-2-1, 5-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), ranked No. 5, hosts Bucknell Tuesday night and travels to N.C. State Saturday night.
TENNIS
EMILY BUSH — Young Harris College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … has a pair of singles wins this Fall and has gone 1-2 in doubles matches in a pair of October matches. Bush won 6-2, 6-3 on Line 3 October 4 at Emmanuel College and won 6-4, 6-0 on Line 1 October 8 at home against Lees-McRae. The Mountain Lions (1-2) host Mars Hill University Wednesday afternoon and will play in the University of North Georgia Invitational in Gainesville Friday and Saturday.
GOLF
DALTON HENSON — Reinhardt University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … shot a 246 total as the Eagles finished third of twelve teams at the Tennessee Wesleyan Intercollegiate Tournament October 8-9. Next for Reinhardt is the Appalachian Athletic Conference Fall Preview Monday and Tuesday in Seneca, South Carolina.
JAKE WEHUNT — Young Harris College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … participated as an individual and placed 56th of 68 players October 3-4 at the Camden Collegiate in Camden, South Carolina. Young Harris finished ninth of ten teams at the event. Wehunt shot 72-79-83 in the 54-hole tournament. The Mountain Lions have one more Fall tournament. They will play in the Currahee Collegiate Invitational in Toccoa, Georgia October 24-25.
CHANC WILLIS — Reinhardt University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … finished with a 239 total at the Tennessee Wesleyan Intercollegiate as the Eagles placed third out of twelve teams. Reinhardt wraps up its Fall schedule Monday and Tuesday in Seneca, South Carolina at the AAC Fall Preview.
SWIMMING
GRAYSON BREEDLOVE — Lenoir-Rhyne University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … placed third (1:07.61) in the 100-yard backstroke; fourth (2:25.50) in the 200-yard backstroke; and was a member of an LRU 200-yard freestyle relay team that placed sixth Friday in a home meet with Mars Hill University and Converse College. Next for the Bears is a tri-meet at Wingate University including Catawba College.
MALLORY COOK — University of Montevallo (So., Adairsville HS) … finished second (2:11.69) in the 200-yard freestyle; fourth (27.83) in the 50-yard freestyle; fourth (30.66) in the 50-yard butterfly; and swam the third leg of the Falcons’ third place 200-yard freestyle relay team as Montevallo won at Millsaps College (MIssissippi) this past Saturday 202-56. The Falcons travel to Berry College for their next meet Saturday.
HARPER POWELL — Florida Institute of Technology (So., Adairsville HS) … placed 26th (25.73) in the 50-yard freestyle; 37th (1:05.79) in the 100-yard backstroke; 44th (58.52) in the 100-yard freestyle; and 55th (2:21.22) in the 200-yard freestyle October 7-8 in Fort Lauderdale at the Nova Southeastern University Invitational. Powell also swam the second leg of the 200-yard freestyle for the Panthers’ team that finished 11th; was a member of a 16th place 200-yard medley team; and was a member of an 18th place 400-yard freestyle relay team. Next for FIT is a home meet against Lynn University Friday.
