This week's update includes reports on 34 local athletes at the collegiate and professional levels for the week ending on Sunday, September 13.

NFL

TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (6th-yr. NFL; Clemson; Cartersville HS) . . . completed 18 of 23 passes for 245 yards and four touchdowns Sunday as the Jaguars won their season opener at home over the Cleveland Browns 34-10. The 26-year-old also had three rushing yards on two attempts. Jacksonville (1-0) plays at the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

MLB / MiLB

MASON BARNETT — Las Vegas Aviators (MLB Athletics Triple-A affiliate; 5th-year pro; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … pitched a nine-inning complete game to beat the Sacramento River Cats this past Saturday, 3-2. He allowed two earned runs on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Barnett improved to 4-3 in 14 starts this season for Las Vegas, covering just over 66 innings. He has 50 strikeouts and a 5.16 ERA in Triple-A. He is also 1-4 with two saves in 18 appearances this season with the MLB Athletics, including 38 strikeouts. The Aviators (39-30 second half; 83-59 overall) play six games this week at the Sugar Land Space Cowboys.

LOGAN MARTIN — Sacramento River Cats (San Francisco Giants Triple-A affiliate; 4th-year pro; Kentucky; Cartersville HS) … made a 2-1/3 innings relief appearance last Friday and was saddled with a pitching loss as the River Cats fell 9-6 at Las Vegas. Martin, who was promoted September 2 from Double-A Richmond to Triple-A Sacramento, allowed five earned runs on four hits and two walks. Two of the four hits were homers. He is 6-2 on the season in 28 appearances covering 64 innings. He has 69 strikeouts and a 4.65 ERA. Sacramento (35-34 second half; 77-64 overall) closes out the regular season this week with six home games against the Reno Aces.

ANTHONY SEIGLER — Boston Red Sox; 9th-year pro; Cartersville HS) … was recalled to the Major League team from Triple-A Worcester last Friday, went 0-for-2 on Saturday at Fenway Park against the Kansas City Royals, and was placed on the 10-day injured list on Sunday with right wrist inflammation. In 2026, Seigler has a .247 average, including three home runs and 13 RBI with Boston in 150 official at-bats. At Worcester, he has a .267 average with three homers and 27 RBI in 161 at-bats. Boston began the week with an 82-68 record and in third place in the American League East. The Red Sox began the week with a 6-game advantage over the Cleveland Guardians for the second Wild Card spot in the American League.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS

BOO WEEKLEY — 29-year pro; 52; Cartersville Country Club member; Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College; Jay, Florida resident — fired rounds of 69-69-64 (8 under par) and tied for third at the Sanford International in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Zach Johnson won the tournament at 11-under, with Ben Crane runner-up at 10-under par. Weekley is currently sixth overall in the Schwab Cup points race with four events remaining before the beginning of the playoffs. The next event is the PURE Insurance Championship at Pebble Beach Golf Links this weekend.

FOOTBALL

JOHNATHAN CLINE — University of Miami (R-Jr., Cartersville HS) … was part of the Hurricanes’ offensive line rotation that helped produce 856 total yards in a 77-7 home win last Thursday over Florida A&M. Miami (2-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) visits Wake Forest on Friday night.

CARLOS DEL RIO-WILSON — Marshall University (R-Sr., Cartersville HS) … completed 7 of 8 passes for 92 yards with one touchdown and one interception this past Saturday in a 28-26 home win over Middle Tennessee. He also rushed for 43 yards on 10 attempts with one touchdown. The Thundering Herd (1-1) travels to Missouri State for a Saturday night game.

JD DeROCHE — University of Cumberlands (So., Cass HS) … made 11 tackles (three solo), including one tackle for loss and one quarterback hurry in the Patriots’ 35-21 home win Saturday over Warner University (FL). The University of Cumberlands (3-0) visits the University of Rio Grande (OH) on Saturday afternoon.

TOKYO GORDON — Sam Houston State University (Sr., Adairsville HS) … the Bearkats’ linebacker saw action, but had no stat line on Saturday during a 23-17 home loss to Tulsa. SHSU (0-2) hosts Nicholls State University on Saturday night.

DEVIN HENDERSON — Appalachian State University (Jr., Cass HS) … made three tackles (one solo) and broke up one pass in the Mountaineers 27-24 win this past Saturday at East Carolina.  Appalachian State (2-0) hosts Charlotte on Saturday night in Boone.

KEVIN HENDERSON — Appalachian State University (Jr., Cass HS) … the linebacker saw action, but did not have a stat line in the Mountaineers’ three-point win Saturday at East Carolina. Appalachian State (2-0) welcomes Charlotte on Saturday night.

BRAYLON HILL — Kentucky Wesleyan College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … rushed for seven yards on three attempts and caught one pass for 14 yards this past Saturday in a 35-14 home loss to William Jewell College (MO). Kentucky Wesleyan (0-2) hosts Findlay University on Saturday.

SHADRE HURST — University of Houston (Fifth Yr. Sr., Cartersville HS) … a starter on the Cougars’ offensive line that helped produce 591 total yards in last Saturday’s 77-6 home win over Southern University. Houston (2-0) plays at Texas Tech on Friday night.

KHRISTIAN LANDO — Jacksonville State University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … had 16 yards and one touchdown rushing on eight carries, and caught one pass for 16 yards in last Saturday’s 29-27 home loss to Ohio University.  Jax State (1-2) hosts Georgia Southern on Saturday night.

BRADY MARCHESE — Auburn University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … saw action, but did not have a stat line in the Tigers’ 43-8 home win over Southern Miss. Auburn (2-0) hosts Florida on Saturday night.

ZAY NALLS — Anderson University (So., Adairsville HS) … broke up one pass and had one solo tackle Saturday in a 39-21 win at UVA-Wise. The Trojans (2-1, 1-0 South Atlantic Conference) travel to Tusculum University (TN) on Saturday afternoon.

JAKE PARKER — Cumberland University (R-Sr., Cartersville HS) … completed 14 of 24 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns Saturday in a Phoenix 31-10 win at Ave Maria (FL). He also rushed for 101 yards on 11 attempts. Cumberland (1-1) welcomes the University of Pikeville on Saturday night.

BRAXTON RYAN — Kentucky Wesleyan College (So., Adairsville HS) … started on the Panthers’ offensive line that helped produce 205 yards of total offense in a 35-14 home loss to William Jewell College. KWC (0-2) hosts Findlay University on Saturday.

LUKE SURRETT — University of Richmond (Jr., Cartersville HS) … started on the Spiders’ offensive line that helped produce 110 total yards in a 73-0 loss this past Saturday at N.C. State. Richmond (2-1, 1-0 Patriot League) hosts Georgetown University on Saturday afternoon.

CHASE TATUM — Kennesaw State University (Fr., Cass HS) … saw action this past Saturday but did not have a stat line in a 31-17 home loss to Georgia State. The Owls (1-1) play Saturday night at the University of Tennessee.

MALACHI TOLIVER — University of Georgia (Jr., Cartersville HS) … was part of an offensive line rotation that helped produce 493 total yards this past Saturday in a 70-20 home win over Western Kentucky. The Bulldogs (2-0) play at Arkansas this Saturday.

SACOVIE WHITE-HELTON — University of Georgia (Jr., Cass HS) … had one reception for a 70-yard touchdown, one rushing attempt for eight yards, one kick return for 18 yards, and six punt returns for 82 yards during the Bulldogs’ 70-20 home win Saturday over Western Kentucky.  UGA (2-0 opens SEC play on Saturday afternoon at Arkansas.

VOLLEYBALL

AILEE ENGLAND — Berry College (Jr., Cartersville HS) … played in nine sets and totaled two kills and four digs as the Vikings beat Asbury University and Transylvania University, but lost to College of Saint Benedict this past weekend at the Transylvania Tournament in Lexington, Kentucky. Berry (4-2) hosts Oglethorpe University, Emory University, Transylvania University, and Randolph Macon College this weekend for the Berry Invitational.

GOLF

CARSEN STANFIELD — USC Upstate (Fr., Cartersville HS) … carded rounds of 75-70-72 (1-over) and tied for 29th individually as the Spartans finished fourth in the 16-team field at the Golfweek Fall Challenge. The tournament was played at True Blue Golf Club in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, September 6-8. Georgia Southern won the tournament, followed by Troy and Georgia State. USC Upstate's next tournament begins Sunday through Tuesday in Birmingham at the GMAC Invitational.

CHRISTINA SURCEY — Lipscomb University (Jr., Cartersville resident, North Cobb Christian HS) … shot 71-75-74 and tied for 36th individually as the Bisons finished 12th in the 23-team field at the Golfweek Fall Challenge. The tournament was held at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. Lipscomb's next tournament is the Betty Lou Evans Invitational on September 21-22 in Lexington, Kentucky.

BRODY TIDWELL — Appalachian State University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … shot 73-68-71 (4-under) and tied for 14th individually at the Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Intercollegiate on September 6-8. The Mountaineers finished 15th in the 16-team field. Coastal Carolina won the tournament at Grande Dunes Resort Club. Elon and Lipscomb took the next two spots. Appalachian State plays next at the University of Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin on September 27-29.

CROSS COUNTRY

ADDISON BROWN — Truett McConnell University (Fr., Woodland HS) … finished 30th (24:08) as the Lady Bears finished third behind Daytona State College and Gulf Coast State College at the 12-team 5K HOKA Nights of Thunder Cross Country Fest last Friday in Tallahassee, Florida. TMU competes at Berea College (KY) on Saturday.

WILL PARKER — Truett McConnell University (So., Woodland HS) … finished 50th (33:47) of 90 runners at the 8K HOKA Nights of Thunder Cross Country Fest last Friday in Tallahassee, Florida. The Bears’ team finished second of eight teams, with Daytona State College winning the men’s race. TMU runs at Berea College (KY) on Saturday.

SOCCER

BRIONNA CARVER — Johnson University (Fr., Woodland HS) … the Royals’ outside back logged 19 minutes of pitch time last Friday in a 4-0 win over Midway University (KY). Johnson (2-2) plays at the University of Pikeville on Wednesday and hosts Tennessee Wesleyan on Saturday.

HUNTER LIMBAUGH — LaGrange College (Fr., Woodland HS) … came off the bench as a defender and saw 19 minutes of pitch time this past Saturday in the Panthers’ 4-3 home loss to William Peace University (NC). LaGrange (3-1) hosts Berry College on Saturday and the U.S. Sports University (AL) on Sunday.

LIBBY MORGAN — Thomas University (So., Woodland HS) … came off the Night Hawks’ bench and took one shot in 60 minutes of pitch time this past Saturday as Thomas lost 7-0 at William Carey University (MS). The Night Hawks (1-2-1) host Life University on Thursday and welcome Dalton State College on Saturday.

MALLORY NICKLAS — Northeastern State University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … the midfielder came off the Riverhawks’ bench and took one shot in 34 minutes during Sunday’s 4-0 win over Missouri Southern State. NSU (4-1-1) visits Northwest Missouri on Friday and Missouri Western on Sunday.

MIGUEL PINEDA — University of North Georgia (Fr., Woodland HS) … made seven saves on September 4 in a 2-0 win over Palm Beach Atlantic and picked up his second clean sheet this past Saturday in a 2-0 win over USC Aiken. He was named the Peach Belt Conference Goalkeeper of the Week following the win over Palm Beach Atlantic University. The Nighthawks (5-0-2) visit Clayton State on Wednesday and Flagler College (FL) on Saturday.

HALEY SKLBA — Point University (So., Cass HS) … logged 32 minutes and took one shot on goal this past Saturday in a Skyhawks 6-0 home win over Blue Mountain Christian University (MS). Point (4-2) hosts Georgia Gwinnett on Wednesday and Andrew College on Friday.
