Athletes Beyond Bartow: Lawrence, Jags snap skid
The wait is finally over.
Cartersville High product Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars finally earned their first win of the season, and all they had to do was leave North America to accomplish the feat.
Lawrence, who picked up his first NFL victory in the process, guided the Jaguars to a comeback win over the Miami Dolphins Sunday in London.
Jacksonville snapped the second-longest losing streak in NFL history. The Jaguars' most recent win had occurred in Week 1 of the 2020 season.
Following a bye week, Jacksonville will head to Seattle in hopes of beginning a winning streak.
PRO FOOTBALL
Trevor Lawrence (Jacksonville Jaguars; Cartersville) — Lawrence threw for 319 yards, while completing 25 of 41 pass attempts. Seven of his completions went for 20-plus yards, including a 28-yard touchdown pass to Marvin Jones late in the first half. That proved to be Lawrence's only score, and while he did lose a fumble, it didn't end up costing the Jaguars, as the defense intercepted the ball right back. The former Clemson star led a pair of late drives that ended in the game-tying and winning field goals. The latter drive included a nifty 9-yard completion to Laviska Shenault on a fourth-and-8 play with 5 seconds left. After calling timeout with just one tick left, Jacksonville's Matthew Wright drilled his second field goal of 50-plus yards in the final 5 minutes to earn the walk-off win.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Terry Berdin (Reinhardt Jr., Cartersville) — Berdin rushed twice for 5 total yards in a 41-0 shellacking of Point Saturday in Valley, Alabama.
Chris Blackston (West Georgia Sr., Adairsville) — Blackston matched his season-high with five tackles in a 30-26 upset of top-ranked West Florida Saturday in Pensacola. West Georgia (6-1, 4-1 in GSC) ascended to the No. 4 spot in the Division-II rankings after the win.
Bryce Burgess (Reinhardt Jr., Cartersville) — Burgess carried the ball once for 2 yards in the resounding win.
Zay Jackson (Missouri Baptist Fr., Cass) — Jackson wound up with two tackles in a 31-16 home loss to Saint Xavier Saturday in St. Louis.
Manny Jones (Colorado State Grad Student, Woodland) — Jones produced five tackles, including three solo, in a 36-7 triumph Saturday at New Mexico.
Titus Jones (Colorado State R-So., Woodland) — Jones was listed as a participant for the Rams, who moved to 3-3 on the year and 2-0 in the Mountain West with the win.
Bradley Kirk (Shorter Sr., Cartersville) — Kirk was included on the participation report but didn't record any stats in a 20-7 home loss to Mississippi College Saturday at Barron Stadium.
Jacob Potter (Kennesaw State Sr., Adairsville) — The Owls long snapper assisted in helping KSU down North Carolina A&T by a 14-0 margin Saturday in Kennesaw.
John Scifers (Incarnate Word Grad Student, Woodland) — Scifers attempted seven kickoffs in a 38-21 victory over Nicholls State Saturday at home. Three of the kickoffs went for touchbacks. However, two of them went out of bounds.
Courtney Slocum (Mars Hill Fr., Adairsville) — Slocum participated in a 32-3 road victory over Limestone Saturday in Gaffney, South Carolina.
Matthew Surrett (Olivet Nazarene Fr., Cartersville) — The Tigers offensive lineman helped Olivet Nazarene hold a slight edge in yards, but visiting St. Ambrose wound up with a 17-10 win Saturday.
Bryce Wilkins (Reinhardt Jr., Cartersville) — The Eagles' staring guard helped pave the way for an offense that accumulated 328 yards on the ground.
CROSS COUNTRY
McKenna Trapheagen (Georgia Tech So., Woodland) — Trapheagen finished 77th — eighth on the Yellow Jackets, who placed second — during the Penn State National Open Friday in University Park.
GOLF
Buck Brumlow (Georgia Fr., Cartersville) — Brumlow and the Georgia golf team closed out the SEC Match Play Championship with a consolation match victory over LSU last Tuesday in Birmingham, Alabama. Brumlow wrapped up a solid display with a 2-up victory over Trey Winstead, improving to 3-1 in the event.
SOCCER
Courtney Rhea (Berry College Sr., Cartersville) — Rhea played 17 minutes off the bench but didn't record any stats in a 1-0 win over Millsaps Sunday at home. Russell Shealy (Syracuse R-Jr., Cartersville native) — Shealy, his side's starting goalkeeper, and Syracuse fell 1-0 to Boston College in a game the Orange dominated but couldn't find the back of the net. The Eagles scored with their only shot on goal in their home win Friday. Madison Shook (Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Fr., Cass) — Shook started but didn't record any stats in a pair of losses last week. ABAC fell to Georgia Military 2-1 last Tuesday and dropped a 3-0 decision to Georgia State Saturday.
