Athletes Beyond Bartow: Lawrence throws for three touchdowns as Jags win at LA Chargers


Trevor Lawrence threw for 262 yards and three touchdowns Sunday as the Jacksonville Jaguars won at the Los Angeles Chargers, 38-10.

In the NFL this week, Trevor Lawrence tossed three touchdown passes Sunday to help lead the Jacksonville Jaguars to a 38-10 win at the Los Angeles Chargers while Cartersville’s Miller Forristall and the Cleveland Browns also moved to 2-1 with a win last Thursday night over the Pittsburgh Steelers.


In MiLB action, Sam Howard and the Toledo Mud Hens were eliminated in the International League West Division’s playoff race but the left handed pitcher did not allow an earned run and yielded only one hit in four appearances last week.


On the LPGA’s qualifying Epson Tour, Kingston’s Maggie Ashmore made her third cut of the year while local collegiate athletes in football, volleyball, and soccer also made contributions across the country this past week.


PRO BASEBALL

SAM HOWARD — Toledo Mud Hens (9th yr. pro; Triple-A Detroit Tigers organization; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS) … made four appearances last week at home and did not allow an earned run as the Mud Hens finished the week 5-2 against the Columbus Clippers. Unfortunately, the second place Mud Hens were eliminated in the International League West Division race. Howard faced the minimum in the seventh inning last Tuesday in a 5-4 win. Wednesday the southpaw struck out the only batter he faced in the seventh inning and earned his 10th hold of the year in an eventual 5-3 win. In the sixth inning of a 4-2 win Friday, the 29-year-old yielded one hit and one unearned run while facing five batters and recording one strikeout. Saturday, he again faced the minimum and struck out one working the sixth inning of an eventual 6-0 loss. Toledo (85-62) has just three games remaining in the 2022 season. The Mud Hens close out the year Monday through Wednesday at the Iowa Cubs.


PRO GOLF

MAGGIE ASHMORE — Epson Tour Golf (3rd year pro; Augusta University; Kingston, GA) … fired rounds of 74-73-76 for a 7-over-par 223 total Friday through Sunday at the Murphy USA El Dorado Shootout in El Dorado, Arkansas. The 54-hole tournament was played at the 6,509-yard, par 72 Mystic Creek Golf Club. Ashmore, who made the 36-hole cut for the third time in eight events played this season, finished tied for 57th and won $814.


PRO FOOTBALL

TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL, 2nd-yr. pro; Clemson; Cartersville HS) … was 28-for-39 passing Sunday for 262 yards and three touchdowns as Jacksonville won at the Los Angeles Chargers 38-10. The 22-year-old finished the game with a 115.5 quarterback rating. He also ran three times for seven yards and did not throw an interception. His first TD pass was a 14-yarder to Zay Jones in the second quarter that gave the Jaguars a 13-0 lead. His second TD pass was a 4-yarder to Chistian Kirk in the third quarter giving Jacksonville a 29-10 advantage. In the fourth quarter, he added an 11-yard TD toss to Marvin Jones. The Jaguars (2-1) play next Sunday at the Philadelphia Eagles.


MILLER FORRISTALL — Cleveland Browns (NFL, 2nd-yr. pro; Alabama; Cartersville HS) … the 24-year-old tight end was targeted once in the Browns’ opening offensive series but did not have a reception during a 29-17 home win last Thursday night over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Cleveland (2-1) plays this Sunday at the Atlanta Falcons.



COLLEGE FOOTBALL

KOLBE BENHAM — Marist College (R-Fr., Cartersville HS) … saw action in the Red Foxes game last Saturday at Drake, but did not add to his stat line after making six tackles in his first two games. Marist (1-2, 1-0 Pioneer Football League) won 30-25 and will host conference foe St. Thomas this Saturday at noon.


JONATHAN CRUZ — University of Mississippi (Sr., Cartersville HS) … was successful on all five PAT kicks and booted four of his six kickoffs for touchbacks last Saturday in a 35-27 home win over Tulsa. Cruz did have one kickoff go out of bounds but averaged over 64 yards per kickoff. 14th-ranked Ole Miss (4-0) hosts No. 7 Kentucky this Saturday for the Rebels’ conference opener and homecoming game.


JORDAN FERGUSON — Middle Tennessee State (Sr., Cartersville HS) … had four tackles including one tackle for a one-yard loss in the Blue Raiders’ 45-31 win at Miami. MTSU (3-1) begins Conference USA play Friday night at home against Texas-San Antonio.


DYLAN FORMAN — Shorter University (Sr., Woodland HS) … the Hawks’ tight end saw action but did not record any stats in a 34-30 home loss last Saturday to 13th-ranked Valdosta State. Shorter (2-2, 0-1 Gulf South Conference) travels to University of West Alabama this Saturday afternoon.


JONAH GAMBILL — University of Memphis (So., Cartersville HS) … a starter on the Tigers’ offensive line, Gambill was part of a unit that produced 334 total yards (141 passing / 193 rushing) during a 44-34 home win over North Texas. Memphis (3-1, 1-0) hosts Temple this Saturday in another American Athletic Conference game.


GAVIN GEROS — Shorter University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … the Hawks’ linebacker had one tackle in a 34-30 home loss last Saturday to 13th-ranked Valdosta State. Shorter (2-2, 0-1 Gulf South Conference) travels to University of West Alabama this Saturday afternoon.


QUANTE JENNINGS — Presbyterian College (So., Cartersville HS) … in a home game last Saturday against Davidson, Jennings had one reception for seven yards and one rushing attempt for no gain in a 56-24 loss. The Blue Hose (1-3, 0-1 Pioneer Football League) plays at Morehead State Saturday.


JaCOREY JOHNS — Wake Forest University (R-Jr., Cartersville HS) … had four tackles and one quarterback hurry in the 22nd-ranked Demon Deacons’ 51-45 (2 OT) home loss last Saturday to 5th-ranked Clemson. Wake Forest (3-1, 0-1 ACC) travels to Tallahassee this Saturday afternoon to play at Florida State.


La’KWAME JUPITER — North Carolina Wesleyan (So., Cartersville HS) … a starter at nose guard, Jupiter had five total tackles (one solo) in the Battling Bishops’ 14-13 win last Saturday at Southern Virginia. N.C. Wesleyan (1-3, 1-0 USA South Athletic Conference) entertains LaGrange College (GA) for homecoming this Saturday afternoon.


SAM PHILLIPS — UT-Chattanooga (R-Fr., Cartersville HS) … after hauling in eight passes in the Mocs’ first three games, Phillips was denied a reception and targeted only once last Saturday in a 31-0 loss at Big Ten Illinois. 9th-ranked Chattanooga (3-1, 1-0) returns to Southern Conference play this Saturday night at East Tennessee State.


EVAN SLOCUM — Wake Forest University (So., Cartersville HS) … the Deacons’ defensive back made four total tackles last Saturday in the 22nd-ranked Demon Deacons’ two overtime loss to 5th-ranked Clemson, 51-45. Wake Forest (3-1, 0-1 ACC) plays at Florida State this Saturday afternoon.


KALEB SPEIGHTS — Shorter University (So., Cass HS) … kicked off six times last Saturday for a 46 yard average with one kick for a touchback in the Hawks’ 34-30 conference loss at home to 13th-ranked Valdosta State. Shorter (2-2, 0-1 Gulf South Conference) travels to University of West Alabama this Saturday afternoon.


BRANDON WADE — University West Florida (Grad Student, Cartersville HS) … the Argonauts’ 290-pound defensive lineman had two tackles with a sack and one quarterback hurry in a 45-42 home loss to Delta State in two overtimes. UWF (2-1, 0-1 Gulf South Conference) hosts North Greenville this Saturday in Pensacola.


VOLLEYBALL

KYA PERKINSON — Piedmont College (Fr., Cass HS) … a middle blocker for the Lions, Perkinson saw her first collegiate action last Thursday in a match at Wesleyan. She was credited with four attack attempts and one assist in Piedmont’s five set win. The Lions (1-10, 1-2 Collegiate Conference of the South) host Agnes Scott College Wednesday night and LaGrange College Saturday afternoon.


MARIA PILIPOSYANS — Reinhardt University (Fr., Cass HS) … totaled 11 kills and four blocks from her middle hitter position as the Eagles won in four sets Thursday at St. Andrews (NC) and lost in four sets at Columbia International University last Friday. Reinhardt (6-9, 4-2 Appalachian Athletic Conference) hosts Brenau Tuesday night, travels to Tennessee Wesleyan Friday night, and plays at Bryan College Saturday afternoon in a trio of conference matches.


SOCCER

BRADY CRAIG — Reinhardt University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … an Eagles’ defender, Craig played all 90 minutes and took one shot in a 4-1 loss last Wednesday at Dalton State. He also played 79 minutes and had one shot on goal Saturday in a 3-0 win at Johnson Universitiy (TN). Through the Eagles’ first eight games, Craig is yet to score but has taken five shots with three on goal. Reinhardt (3-4-1, 2-1-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference) plays at Point University Wednesday and hosts St. Andrews Universitiy (NC) Saturday.


CHLOE RAVISH — Shorter University (Fr., Woodland HS) … the Hawks’ goalkeeper played the second half of an 8-0 loss at Valdosta State last Friday night. She allowed four goals and had four saves. Shorter (0-10-1, 0-6 Gulf South Conference) hosts Lee University Sunday afternoon.


RUSSELL SHEALY — Syracuse University (R-Sr., Cartersville resident; Darlington HS) … a goalkeeper for the Orange, Shealy made two saves and recorded his fifth shutout of the season in a 2-0 win last Tuesday at Colgate. He then made three saves but allowed the only goal of the game Saturday in a 1-0 conference home loss to Virginia. Syracuse (7-1-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) was ranked No. 3 but will likely slip in the next poll release. The Orange plays at Virginia Tech Friday night.
