This week’s Athletes Beyond Bartow updates include notes on three dozen local athletes across the country at the professional and collegiate levels.




PGA KORN FERRY TOUR


BUCK BRUMLOW — 2nd-year professional; University of Georgia; Cartersville HS … carded rounds of 68-70-71-75 (4-under par) and tied for 53rd at the Club Car Championship at Landings Golf & Athletic Club in Savannah from last Thursday to Sunday. Davis Lamb secured victory in the tournament with a 19-under par finish. Brumlow earned just over $4000 but did not place within the Top 25 to secure an exemption for the next Korn Ferry Tour event. He gained entry to the Savannah event by winning a college tournament last year while at UGA and was granted a sponsor's exemption. Brumlow's options for future Korn Ferry events include obtaining another sponsor exemption or qualifying on Monday. He is also eligible for the PGA Tour Americas series, which begins April 16-19 with the Brazil Open in Rio de Janeiro.


GOLF


CHRISTINA SURCEY — Lipscomb University (So., Cartersville resident, North Cobb Christian HS) … tied for 22nd (77-77-72, 10-over par) of 91 players competing as an individual while the Bison finished runner-up to the University of Delaware at the 16-team Nashville Invitational held at Hermitage Golf Course. Lipscomb plays next at the 22nd “Mo”Morial Invitational in Bryan, Texas, on April 6-8.



BEACH VOLLEYBALL


AILEE ENGLAND — Berry College (So., Cartersville HS) … lost a Line 3 match 19-22, 20-22 with partner Kaylee Howell in a Vikings’ 4-1 loss Friday afternoon at Carson-Newman University (TN). The duo bounced back later in the day to win at Line 3 and won 21-6, 21-13, in a Berry 3-2 win over Erskine College (SC). Berry (18-5) travels to UT-Chattanooga for a tournament on April 10-11 where they will face Georgia State, UT-Martin, the University of North Alabama, and the host Moccasins.


LAUREN LAWSON — University of South Carolina (Jr., Cartersville HS) … won 21-16, 21-12 at Line 4 with partner Juju Quintero last Friday as the 19th-ranked Gamecocks defeated 11th-ranked Arizona State 3-2 in a match at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. The duo also lost 12-21, 24-26 at Line 4 in a 3-2 South Carolina loss to Boise State.  The Gamecocks also lost to 7th-ranked TCU 5-0 on the trip.  South Carolina (14-5) travels to Tucson, Arizona, for the Wildcat Spring Challenge on Friday and Saturday, where they will square off with Colorado Mesa University, the University of Hawaii, Florida Gulf Coast University, and host Arizona.


LONDON MOULTRIE — Wingate University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … in six matches last week, Moultrie and her Line 3 partner Amelia Talbott went 2-4 as the Bulldogs split matches with Catawba College, defeated Lake Sumter State CC, and lost to Jacksonville University, Palm Beach Atlantic University, and Florida Southern College. Wingate (10-11) visits Coastal Carolina University on Wednesday and will play in a tournament at Erskine College on Friday and Saturday.



TENNIS


EMILY BUSH — University of North Georgia (Sr., Cartersville HS) … collected a Line 6 singles win 7-5, 6-3, and won at Line 2 doubles 6-2 with partner Linn Goerdes last Friday, but the 11th-ranked Nighthawks lost 4-3 at 16th-ranked Flagler College (FL). One Sunday, Bush won her Line 6 singles match 6-1, 6-0, but lost at Line 2 doubles 6-3 with Goerdes in a 4-1 team loss at 13th-ranked Rollins College (FL). UNG hosts Georgia College on Thursday afternoon.


SYDNEY COPPOLA — Berry College (Jr., Cass HS) … won by default at Line 3 doubles and Line 6 singles as the Vikings defeated Millsaps College (MS) 7-0 last Saturday. Coppola lost at Line 3 doubles 6-3 with Charlee Eidson, and lost at Line 6 singles 1-6, 0-6 in a 6-1 home loss Sunday to Rhodes College (TN). The Vikings make a Texas road trip this week to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday, Southwestern University on Saturday, and Trinity University on Sunday.



TRACK AND FIELD


BEN ABERNATHY — Reinhardt University (Fr., Adairsville HS) … placed 10th in the long jump (6.47m) as the Eagles finished 7th of 11 teams at the Don McGarey KSU Invitational in Kennesaw last Friday and Saturday. The meet was won by the host Owls, followed by Georgia State and Dayton University. Reinhardt heads to Atlanta on Saturday for the Emory University Dooley Elite Meet.


McKINLEY CHAPPELL — Berry College (Sr., Woodland HS) … finished 32nd (4:22.40) in the 1500-meter run at the Emory Thrills in the Hills Meet this past weekend. Berry returns to Emory for the Dooley Elite Meet on Saturday.


JUNE DELAUDER — Reinhardt University (So., Cass HS) … placed 14th in the 400-meter hurdles (1:15.75) at the KSU Invitational this past weekend. Next for Reinhardt is the Dooley Elite Meet at Emory University.


JAYLEN SCOTT — Reinhardt University (So., Cartersville HS) … finished 24th in the hammer throw (32.30m) at the KSU Invitational this past weekend. Reinhardt competes on Saturday at the Emory Dooley Elite Meet.



SOFTBALL


KILEY ARNOLD — Shorter University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … went 0-for-5 in Hawks’ losses on March 24 and this past Saturday at the University of North Georgia and Southern Wesleyan University. Shorter (11-28, 5-13 Conference Carolinas) went 0-4 on the week. The Hawks visit Erskine College for two games on Wednesday afternoon.


JORDAN BISHOP — Virginia Tech (Fr., Cartersville HS) … saw action as a pinch runner and entered defensively at catcher last Friday as the Hokies won at Boston College, 11-0. Eleventh-ranked Virginia Tech swept a three-game series with the Eagles, improving to 31-4 overall and 7-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. They host Clemson for three games on Thursday through Saturday.


MEGAN GREGORY — University of Indiana (Jr., Adairsville HS) … faced two batters and gave up one hit, but retired the final out of the seventh inning March 23 in a 24-12 home loss to Oregon. The Hoosiers (27-7, 7-2 Big Ten Conference) visits UCLA for a three-game conference series on Friday through Sunday.


ALYSSA JARRETT — Piedmont University (Jr., Adairsville HS) … went 1-for-2, including a double in a start at catcher during a 2-1 home loss to 8th-ranked Huntingdon College (AL) last Friday. The Lions (15-9, 4-2 Collegiate Conference of the South) welcome LaGrange College for two games on Thursday afternoon and host a doubleheader with Maryville College (TN) on Friday afternoon.


RACHAEL LEE — Valdosta State University (Sr., Cass HS) … went 0-for-5, but reached once on a hit by pitch as the Blazers lost two of three at Mississippi College. VSU (15-17, 9-9 Gulf South Conference) hosts Auburn University-Montgomery for three games on Friday and Saturday.


ALEXIS WOODS — Tennessee State University (Jr., Cass HS) … went 1-for-7 with one walk and one sacrifice hit in four starts last week. The Tigers (0-24, 0-12 Ohio Valley Conference) dropped a home game with Lipscomb University and lost three at Southeast Missouri State (MO). The Tigers host three games with Lindenwood University on Friday and Saturday.



BASEBALL


CAMERON ADAMS — Shorter University (R-Fr., Excel Christian Academy) … went 1-for-9 with one walk in four losses last week to Carson-Newman University and at UNC Pembroke. The Hawks (11-19, 3-18 Conference Carolinas) visit the University of Montevallo (AL) on Tuesday and host three games with Erskine College on Friday and Saturday.


DREW BILLINGS — Trinity College of Jacksonville (Sr., Woodland HS) … picked up a pitching win in a two-inning relief appearance on March 24 as the Eagles defeated Thomas University (GA) 10-4. He worked scoreless frames with no hits in the fifth and sixth innings, issuing two walks with four strikeouts. This past Saturday, Billings earned his second save of the season with a scoreless seventh inning that included one strikeout. Trinity (12-17) plays a doubleheader on Tuesday against Florida Memorial University in Viera, Florida.


CURT BONNER — LaGrange College (Sr., Cartersville HS) … went 9-for-15, including one homer, one double, one walk, and 10 RBI in a three-game series this past weekend at Covenant College. The Panthers won two of three and improved to 15-12 overall and 4-5 in the Collegiate Conference of the South. LaGrange visits Belhaven University (MS) for three games on Friday and Saturday.


GAVIN DYSON — LaGrange College (Fr., Excel Christian Academy) … entered Friday’s 18-11 loss at Covenant College and retired the final out of the eighth inning. He allowed three hits and two unearned runs, facing four batters. The Panthers (15-12, 4-5 Collegiate Conference of the South) travel to Belhaven University (MS) for a three-game series on Friday and Saturday.


MICAH EARWOOD — Southeastern University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … collected a pitching victory in relief by retiring the final five outs across the eighth and ninth innings of a come-from-behind 10-8 home win last Saturday over 11th-ranked St. Thomas University (FL). Earwood struck out all four batters he faced. There was also a caught stealing for the fifth out. The Fire (25-9, 9-3 Sun Conference), ranked No. 5 in NAIA, visit 22nd-ranked Keiser University (FL) for four games this Thursday through Saturday.


ELLIOTT EASTIN — Covenant College (Jr., Cartersville HS) … hit safely in all four games last week and was 5-for-15 at the plate with two doubles, two walks, and five RBI. The Scots lost at Oglethorpe University and dropped two of three at home to LaGrange College. Covenant (10-15, 3-6 Collegiate Conference of the South) hosts Belhaven University (MS) for three games on Friday and Saturday.


COLIN EATON — East Tennessee State University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … faced three batters and allowed one earned run on two walks, but retired the final out of the sixth inning March 24 in a 9-4 home win over Virginia Tech. The Buccaneers (19-7, 4-2 Southern Conference) play a three-game conference series at Samford University (AL) on Thursday through Saturday.


RYAN FARR — Kentucky Christian University (So., Adairsville HS) … made a 2-⅔ innings relief appearance this past Saturday. He allowed seven earned runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out three in a 12-11 home loss to Indiana University Southeast. KCU (13-14, 6-9 River States Conference) welcomes Kent State Tuscarawas on Tuesday for a doubleheader and hosts a doubleheader with Brescia University (KY) on Thursday.


MADDOX FRAZIER — Southern Union State CC (Fr., Cartersville HS) … made a two inning relief appearance on March 21, allowing one earned run on two hits in an 11-10 home win over Chattahoochee Valley CC. SUSCC (18-14, 9-7) hosts Central Alabama CC on Tuesday and plays a four-game, home-and-home series with Calhoun CC on Thursday and Saturday.


DAVID JINKS — Bethany College (So., Excel Christian Academy) … entered as a pinch runner and made a defensive appearance at catcher in a Bison 6-3 home loss this past Saturday to Thiel College (PA). Bethany (13-8, 3-3 Presidents’ Athletic Conference) welcomes John Carroll University (OH) on Wednesday and hosts Hiram College (OH) for a doubleheader on Saturday.


HUNTER LOVETT — Oglethorpe University (Fr., Cass HS) … made a pair of home relief pitching appearances this past weekend against Trinity University (TX). He worked the seventh and eighth innings and allowed one earned run on three hits last Friday in a 7-4 loss. On Saturday, Lovett faced three batters and retired two outs to begin the eighth inning. He allowed no runs, hits, or walks and struck out one in the Stormy Petrels 11-10 win. OU (13-9, 4-2 Southern Athletic Association) visits Piedmont University on Tuesday night and hosts Millsaps College (MS) for three games on Friday and Saturday.


SAM MELTON — Guilford College (Sr., Cartersville HS) … made a pinch hitting appearance and entered defensively at first base in a 12-5 loss this past Saturday at Washington & Lee University (VA). The Quakers (10-13, 2-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) visit Southern Virginia University, host Roanoke College (VA) on Wednesday, and welcome Shenandoah University (VA) for games on Friday and Saturday.


LUKE MILLER — Columbus State University (So., Cartersville HS) … made two starts last week and went 0-for-7 with two walks and one RBI as the Cougars won at Albany State and lost a home game to USC Beaufort. Columbus State (20-10, 13-5 Peach Belt Conference) visits Auburn University Montgomery on Tuesday night and plays a three-game series at Middle Georgia State University on Thursday through Saturday.


JULEZ PRATT — Wabash Valley College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … went 2-for-2, scored one run and drove in one in a Warriors’ 20-1 win last Thursday at Shawnee CC (IL). Wabash Valley (26-10, 9-3 Great Rivers Athletic Conference) visits Vincennes University on Tuesday and plays a three-game, home-and-home series with Southeastern Illinois College on Thursday and Friday.


AYDEN RAY — USC Lancaster (So., Woodland HS) … hit safely in all four games he started and went 9-for-14, including three doubles, one home run, three runs scored, and 15 RBI. The Lancers lost at Rockingham CC, but swept three games at USC Salkehatchie. USC Lancaster (20-16, 7-10 NJCAA Region 10) welcomes Florence-Darlington Tech or three games on Friday and Saturday.


DREW ROTHSCHILD — Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (Sr., Cartersville HS) … went 1-for-13 with one walk and one RBI in four games last week. The Stallions lost a home game to Middle Georgia State, but won two of three at home with Faulkner University (AL). ABAC (25-11, 10-5 Southern States Athletic Conference) visits 2nd-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College on Tuesday and plays a three-game series at the University of Mobile on Friday and Saturday.


HANK SMITH — University of West Georgia (R-Jr., Cartersville HS) … appeared in three games and made one start last week as the Wolves lost to visiting Mercer and won two games at Queens University (NC). Smith was 0-for-5 at the plate in his start and had no official at-bats at Queens. West Georgia (8-20, 5-4 Atlantic Sun Conference) welcomes Samford University on Tuesday and hosts a three-game series with Florida Gulf Coast University on Thursday through Saturday.


DAVIS WILLIAMS — University of West Georgia (R-Jr., Cartersville HS) … closed out the ninth inning with no decision in a 7-1 Wolves’ win at Queens University of Charlotte last Saturday. He allowed no runs on one hit and one walk, facing five batters. West Georgia (8-20, 5-4 Atlantic Sun Conference) welcomes Samford University on Tuesday and hosts a three-game series with Florida Gulf Coast University on Thursday through Saturday.


SAWYER WILSON — Columbus State University (So., Cartersville HS) … gave up seven runs, six earned, on ten hits and two hit batters in a six-inning pitching start and eventual 10-9 loss last Friday to visiting USC Beaufort. Wilson received no decision. CSU (20-10, 13-5 Peach Belt Conference) visits Auburn University Montgomery on Tuesday and plays a three-game series at Middle Georgia State University on Thursday through Saturday.
