Athletes Beyond Bartow: Local college and pro athletes update for week ending March 21

The weekly update on athletes from Cartersville and Bartow County contributing to their collegiate and professional teams. The update includes competitions for the week ending Monday, March 21. This week's update includes more than 30 local competitors. A.J. Mosby has gotten off to a hot start in his second year in The Basketball League.
The former Cartersville High star posted a double-double in a recent win for the Albany Patroons, and Mosby averaged 19.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game over his first five appearances.
Elsewhere in the professional basketball ranks, Cartersville native Ashton Hagans and Raptors 905 only played once last week, but they certainly made the most of it. In a home rout of Fort Wayne, Hagans recorded 15 points and the same number of assists in 30 minutes of action.
Collegiately, Woodland graduate Bryce VanOrder went 3-0 for the Piedmont men's tennis team; Cartersville golf product Buck Brumlow helped Georgia capture the Linger Longer Invitational; and former Canes runner Bill Archer produced a top-three showing in a 1500-meter race at home.
SOFTBALL
BELLA CARNES — Georgia College (So., Woodland HS) … saw some action defensively in right field in last Tuesday’s 7-2 loss at Francis Marion. The Bobcats (9-20, 1-8) dropped all five games last week and will look to bounce back in a doubleheader at University of Montevallo Wednesday and in a doubleheader at Catawba Sunday.
PRESLEY EDWARDS — Wesleyan College (Jr., Cartersville HS) … splitting time at catcher, Edwards went 1-for-5 with two RBIs in a pair of wins Thursday and Sunday over LaGrange and Agnes Scott. The Wolves went 2-2 for the week and are 9-4 for the season. Wesleyan hosts Birmingham Southern Thursday and Berea College (Kentucky) Saturday.
ANSLEY EVANS — Reinhardt University (Fr., Woodland HS) … the Eagles’ third baseman went 3-for-6 with one RBI Saturday in a doubleheader sweep at Brevard College. Reinhardt (14-7, 4-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference) hosts Tennessee Wesleyan Tuesday and will play at Milligan University Saturday and Montreat College Sunday in conference doubleheaders.
BRIANNA HILL — Covenant College (So., Woodland HS) … made appearances as a pinch hitter and walked both times in a doubleheader sweep at Johnson University in Knoxville. The Scots (9-8) begin USA South Conference play with a doubleheader Friday at LaGrange College and Saturday at Huntingdon College.
SADYE JOHNSON — University of North Georgia (Fr., Adairsville HS) … started at catcher in the third game of a weekend Peach Belt Conference series sweep at Lander University She went 0-for-3 at the plate but had eight putouts and two assists defensively. One assist was when she successfully fielded and threw out a sacrifice. The other was when she threw out a would-be base stealer. UNG (23-8, 7-2) has won nine straight and is ranked No. 15 in the nation. The Nighthawks play at 16th-ranked Auburn-Montgomery Tuesday and host Young Harris in a PBC doubleheader Saturday.
LAUREN McELHANEY — University of West Georgia (So., Cartersville HS) … appeared defensively in both games of last Saturday’s home doubleheader with Delta State and was 0-for-1 in her only plate appearance. The Wolves (10-15, 4-10 Gulf South Conference) dropped all three games in the weekend conference series. They play at Eckerd College Tuesday, at Florida Southern Wednesday, and at West Alabama in a three-game GSC series Saturday and Sunday.
HANNAH TODD — University of Houston (Grad Student, Cartersville HS) … made appearances in losses to Iowa, Indiana, and No. 1-ranked Oklahoma last Saturday and Sunday in Oklahoma City at the Hall of Fame Classic. She surrendered ten runs (six earned) on six hits, eight walks, and three hit batsmen while recording four strikeouts. The Cougars (14-15) host Sam Houston Tuesday and play a three-game American Athletic Conference series at Tulsa Friday through Sunday.
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
SAM HOWARD — Pittsburgh Pirates (9th-year pro; Georgia Southern University; Cartersville HS) … made a one-inning pre-season appearance Sunday in the Pirates’ 10-4 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. In the sixth inning appearance, the lefty gave up a solo home run and a walk. He also struck out two of five batters faced.
BASEBALL
MASON BARNETT — Auburn University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … in a start against top-ranked Ole Miss last Thursday, the righty went three innings allowing five earned runs on six hits and two walks. He struck out six and was tagged with the loss. The Tigers won one of three games in the weekend series. Auburn (14-6, 1-2 SEC) hosts South Alabama Tuesday and plays a three-game series at Texas A&M Friday through Sunday.
JAKE GOOCH — Central Alabama CC (So., Cartersville HS) … went 2-for-6 with one double and one RBI in a home doubleheader Sunday against Snead State. He also scored one run. The Trojans (9-16, 1-7 Alabama Community College Conference) entertain USC Salkehatchie in a three-game series Friday and Saturday.
BLAINE INGRAM — Reinhardt University (So., Cass HS) … went 1-for-2 with one RBI in a doubleheader sweep of Toccoa Falls last Tuesday. Ingram made an appearance as a pinch hitter and made a defensive appearance at first base. The Eagles (18-12, 8-4 Appalachian Athletic Conference) have a home game Tuesday with Middle Georgia State and a three-game home series Friday and Saturday with Bluefield State.
BRYCEN JONES — University of West Georgia (Jr., Cartersville HS) … allowed an inherited runner to score on a wild pitch and got an infield pop up in the eleventh inning during a relief appearance Sunday against visiting Delta State. The Wolves lost 10-9 in twelve innings and won one of three in the weekend series. UWG (12-11, 5-9) plays a three-game Gulf South Conference series at West Alabama Friday and Saturday.
LOGAN MARTIN — Sewanee - University of the South (Jr., Cartersville HS) … tossed a complete game Sunday but was saddled with the pitching loss as the Tigers fell to Hendrix College (Arkansas) 4-2. The right-hander yielded four runs (two earned) on eight hits and two walks. He fanned eleven. Sewanee (2-17, 0-6 Southern Athletic Association) plays at Covenant College Tuesday and at Berry College Saturday and Sunday in a three-game conference series.
MASON McBEE — Coastal Alabama South (Fr., Cartersville HS) … in a two inning relief appearance Saturday against Coastal Alabama East, McBee allowed one earned run on three hits and one walk in the fifth and sixth innings. He struck out three in the 8-5 loss as the two teams split the four-game series. The Sun Chiefs (11-13-1, 4-4 Alabama Community College Conference) play a doubleheader at Chipola College Thursday.
TREY SCOTT — Cleveland State CC (Fr., Cass HS) … allowed a pair of unearned runs in a seventh inning relief appearance Saturday as the Cougars beat Roane State 11-4. The righty walked two and struck out one facing six batters. Cleveland State (18-8, 5-3 Tennessee Community College Athletic Association) hosts Kishwaukee CC (Illinois) Tuesday in a doubleheader and entertains Motlow State CC in a three-game conference series Friday and Saturday.
SCOTTY SMITH — Covenant College (Fr., Woodland HS) … made a relief appearance retiring five outs in the fifth and sixth innings Monday during a 10-6 loss at Huntingdon College. The Scots (7-10, 0-3 USA South Athletic Conference) host Sewanee Tuesday afternoon and entertain 12th-ranked LaGrange in a three-game conference series Frdiay and Saturday.
STEVEN SPELL — Young Harris College (Jr., Cass HS) … in a home game last Tuesday with Tusculum and a three-game home weekend series with Flagler College, Spell went 1-for-8 with three walks, a stolen base, and one RBI. He was also hit by a pitch twice. The Mountain Lions split their four games during the week. YHC (18-7, 7-2 Peach Belt Conference) hosts Mars Hill College Tuesday and returns to conference play Friday through Sunday in a series at Columbus State.
PRESTON WELCHEL — Coastal Alabama South (So., Cartersville HS) … went 5-for-12 with a home run, four walks, one stolen base, and four runs scored as the Sun Chiefs split a four-game, home-and-home series with Coastal Alabama East. Coastal South (11-13-1, 4-4 ACCC) plays a doubleheader Thursday at Chipola College.
DAVIS WILLIAMS — Birmingham-Southern College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … closed out the seventh inning on the mound Monday as the NCAA D-III 3rd-ranked Panthers defeated Carroll University (Wisconsin) 12-1 in Pensacola. BSC (15-4, 4-2 Southern Athletic Association) has a home game with 12th-ranked LaGrange College Wednesday night and will host a three-game conference series with Millsaps College Saturday and Sunday.
JORDAN WILKIE — Augusta University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … the second baseman finished 5-for-11 with a pair of doubles and scored twice but the Jaguars dropped all three games of a home Peach Belt series last Saturday and Sunday with 8th-ranked Columbus State. Augusta (7-16, 0-9 PBC) plays at Francis Marion Wednesday night and has a three-game series at Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina Friday and Saturday.
ZACH WILSON — Penn State Greater Allegheny (So., Woodland HS) … made a start at first base Sunday and was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored during an 8-6 home win over Point Park. PSUGA (4-9) plays a three-game conference series Friday and Sunday with Penn State Beaver.
PRO BASKETBALL
ASHTON HAGANS — Raptors 905 - NBA G League; Cartersville native; University of Kentucky; Newton HS) … racked up 15 points and 15 assists in 30 minutes off the bench in a 131-106 victory over Fort Wayne March 17 at home. The point guard added five rebounds and two steals in the impressive performance.
A.J. MOSBY — Albany Patroons - The Basketball League; (Cartersville HS) … In helping Albany to a 123-93 home win last Friday over Connecticut, Mosby produced a 15-point, 13-rebound double-double. He added four assists and a steal in the victory.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
JUSTICE HAYES — South Georgia Tech (So., Cass HS) .. contributed six points, one rebound and one block in 10 minutes, but South Georgia Tech fell 88-80 to South Plains College in the opening round of the NJCAA national championship March 15 in Hutchinson, Kansas.
GOLF
BUCK BRUMLOW — University of Georgia (Fr., Cartersville HS) … Brumlow overcame a rough first round to post back-to-back 1-under 71s as the Bulldogs won the Linger Longer Invitational at Great Waters Golf Course in Eatonton. Georgia shot an 836 over three rounds March 20-22 to finish ahead of 14 other schools, including edging runner-up Vanderbilt by four strokes after entering the day tied for the lead. No. 10 Georgia was one of eight ranked teams in the event, including No. 6 Vandy and No. 4 North Carolina. After an 11-over 83 in the opening round, Brumlow rebounded nicely to place tied for 53rd overall out of 90 competitors. His Round 2 showing didn't factor into the team score, as the talented Bulldogs managed four other scores between 68-70. However, Brumlow's final round 71 tied him for second on the team.
BLANE DAVIS — Georgia College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … playing as an independent and not counting among the team scores for the Bobcats, Davis shot rounds of 74-81-74 — 229 and placed 70th at the Bobcat Invitational Monday and Tuesday. The tournament, hosted by Georgia College, was played at the Par-70, 6730 yard Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee. Barry University won the 15-team tournament by six shots over Lander University. The host Bobcats were eleventh. The next tournament for Georgia College is the UNG Bracket Challenge April 4-5 at Chimney Oaks.
TENNIS
HOUSTON MEDLOCK — Piedmont College (Sr., Adairsville HS) … won his lone singles match and split his two doubles matches, as Piedmont finished 2-1 on the week. In a 6-3 win over Berry, the former Adairsville standout rallied for a thrilling 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory. He also paired with Alberto Nunez for an 8-5 triumph on Line 1 doubles. In a 5-2 defeat against Southern Wesleyan, Medlock and Nunez dropped a 6-4 decision.
EMILY SURCEY — Arkansas State University (Fr., Cass HS) … Surcey and her Line 3 doubles partner, Hunter Roper, earned wins in road Sun Belt Conference matchups with Louisiana last Saturday and Louisiana-Monroe Sunday. The duo picked up 6-1 and 6-3 victories, respectively. However, Surcey came up short in her Line 2 singles matches, and as a team, the Red Wolves fell in both meetings.
CHRISTY TURNER — Coppin State University (Sr., Woodland HS) … Turner and the Eagles dropped a trio of matchups last week in the MEAC Roundup in Cary, North Carolina. Coppin State fell to North Carolina Central (7-0, last Thursday), South Carolina State (6-1, last Friday) and Norfolk State (6-1, Saturday). Turner went 0-3 in both singles and doubles action, with her most competitive match being a 6-4, 7-5 defeat in Line 3 singles action against Norfolk State.
BRYCE VAN ORDER — Piedmont College (So., Woodland HS) … VanOrder went 3-0 overall, with a pair of singles wins and a doubles victory, across Piedmont's trio of home matchups last week. The southpaw emerged with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win in Line 2 singles play against Berry. He followed it up with a 7-5, 6-4 result on Line 2 versus Southern Wesleyan. In a 9-0 blowout victory over Johnson and Wales, VanOrder teamed with Kody Dills in an 8-0 rout on Line 2 doubles.
TRACK AND FIELD
BILL ARCHER — University of Montevallo (Fr., Cartersville HS) … Competing in the Falcon Track and Field Classic at home, Archer placed third overall in the men's 1500-meter race, with a time of 4 minutes, 6.70 seconds. Archer finished first among the Montevallo competitors in the 28-person event.
STEPHEN SMITH — Kennesaw State University (So., Cass HS) … finished tied for fourth in the men's pole vault, clearing 4.45 meters, during the Yellow Jacket Invitational last week at Georgia Tech.
