Athletes Beyond Bartow: Local Minor Leaguers reach the All-Star Break

This week's edition of 'Athletes Beyond Bartow' provides an update on the two local Minor League Baseball prospects.


MASON BARNETT — Quad Cities River Bandits (KC Royals High A affiliate; 2nd-yr. pro; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … made a start last Wednesday at the Cedar Rapids Kernels and pitched six innings in the Bandits’ 3-2 loss. The right handed hurler was the pitcher of record and gave up three earned runs on five hits with no walks. He did hit one batter and struck out eight. The loss leaves the 22-year-old with a 2-5 record for the season in 13 starts and 64 innings. Barnett has a 3.80 ERA with 76 strikeouts. Quad Cities (37-44 overall) was 2-4 last week in their series at Cedar Rapids. The River Bandits (5-10 in the second half of the Midwest League’s West Division standings) return to action Friday at home beginning a three-game series with the South Bend Cubs.



ANTHONY SEIGLER — Somerset Patriots (NY Yankees Double-A affiliate; 6th-yr. pro; Cartersville HS) … has been on the Patriots’ injured list since June 29. For the season, Seigler has a .173 batting average with one homer and 16 RBIs in 133 official at-bats. He has appeared in 41 games utilized as both catcher and designated hitter. The Patriots (47-32 overall) were 1-4 last week in a home series against the Reading Fightin’ Phils. They also had a suspended game this past Sunday with Reading that will be completed on August 15. The score was tied 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth when it was halted. Somerset (5-6 second half; Eastern League Northeast Division) returns to action Friday at the Binghamton Rumble Ponies playing a three-game series through Sunday.
