The NCAA Division I baseball regionals begin this weekend, while MiLB schedules enter the final month of their first-half schedules. MiLB Double-A leagues reset team records to 0-0 on June 23, and Triple-A resets the next day. First-half division winners secure playoff berths.

MASON BARNETT — Las Vegas Aviators (MLB Athletics Triple-A affiliate; 5th-year pro; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … was tagged with his first pitching loss of the season last Friday night in a home start against the Albuquerque Isotopes. The 25-year-old went just 2-1/3 innings, giving up seven earned runs on six hits and six walks as the Aviators fell 7-2. Barnett had one strikeout. In eight starts in Triple-A, he is 2-1 with 36 strikeouts in 36-2/3 innings with a 4.91 ERA. Las Vegas started this week with a 26-23 record, trailing Sacramento by three games in the Pacific Coast League West. The Aviators play a six-game series at the Tacoma Rainiers this week.

LOGAN MARTIN — Richmond Flying Squirrels (San Francisco Giants Double-A affiliate; 4th-year pro; Kentucky; Cartersville HS) … made a 3-1/3 innings home start this past Saturday with no decision and four strikeouts in a 5-1 win over the Binghampton Rumble Ponies. The 24-year-old allowed one earned run on three hits and two walks. Richmond entered the week with a 31-13 record, leading Akron in the Eastern League Southwest Division by 6-1/2 games. The Flying Squirrels are on the road through Sunday for six games at the Akron RubberDucks.

ANTHONY SEIGLER — Worcester Woo Sox (Boston Red Sox Triple-A affiliate; 9th-year pro; Cartersville HS) … went 3-for-15 in four home starts last week against the Rochester Red Wings. He had one double, four walks, scored one run, was hit by one pitch, and drove in three runs. The 26-year-old began the week with a .262 batting average in 84 official at-bats. Seigler has one home run and 15 RBIs. The Woo Sox (23-25) lost five of six last week and began the week six games behind the Red Wings in the International League East. Worcester visits the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders for a six-game series on Tuesday through Sunday. 




PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS


JASON BOHN — — 34-year pro; Acworth resident; Cartersville CC; Alabama … tied for 62nd with rounds of 78-79-77 (+15) at the Trophy Hassan II held at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Rabat, Morocco. Australian Scott Hend shot 66-69-69 to win the event. Bohn is currently 87th in the senior tour’s Schwab Cup standings. The next event on the PGA Tour Champions is the American Family Insurance Championship at TPC Wisconsin in Madison.

CALEB DANIEL — Georgia Tech (So., Cartersville HS) … did not appear in the Yellow Jackets’ three-game sweep through the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament last weekend. Tech defeated Virginia, Miami, and North Carolina to win the tournament in Charlotte. Daniel is hitting .290 in 124 at-bats and 32 games this season with nine homers and 27 RBIs. Georgia Tech (48-9) will host the four-team, double-elimination Atlanta Regional on Friday through Monday. The Yellow Jackets play the University of Illinois-Chicago on Friday at noon. Oklahoma and The Citadel face off in the other first-round game.
