Athletes Beyond Bartow: Mosby, Patroons advance to The Basketball League's final four

PRO BASEBALL


SAM HOWARD — Toledo Mud Hens (9th yr. pro; Triple-A Detroit Tigers organization; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS) … in his only appearance last week, the southpaw struck out two but gave up a two-run home run in the sixth inning of an eventual 10-4 win at the Worcester Red Sox. Howard induced a pop out and struck out a batter before the third batter he faced in the inning reached on an error. The home run followed before fanning the next. As a result, both runs were unearned. Howard (0-1) has a 3.75 ERA in 13 MiLB games this season and 12 innings pitched. He has recorded 18 strikeouts. Toledo (34-30) is in fourth place in the International League’s West Division. The Mud Hens host the Scranton/Wilke-Barre RailRiders this week in a six game series.



CONNOR JUSTUS — Charleston (WV) Dirty Birds (7th yr. pro; Independent Atlantic League; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS) … in five games last week at the Gastonia Honey Hunters, the shortstop was 6-for-16 at the plate with a pair of walks, three runs scored, and five RBIs raising his season batting average to .305. The Dirty Birds (23-30) are currently 16-1/2 games behind Gastonia in the South Division of the Atlantic League.



ANTHONY SEIGLER — Hudson Valley Renegades (5th yr. pro; High Class-A New York Yankees organization; Cartersville HS) … playing in three games last week at the Greensboro Grasshoppers, the switch hitting catcher was 4-for-11 with a double, one home run, a pair of walks, and three RBIs. The 23-year-old is now hitting .316 in June and has lifted his season average to .277 with 7 home runs, 27 runs batted in, and a .451 on base percentage. Seigler has also stolen six bases. Hudson Valley (32-31) is currently in third place in the South Atlantic League’s North Division and trails Aberdeen by 11 games in the standings. The Renegades play a six game series this week at Winstron-Salem.



PRO BASKETBALL


A.J. MOSBY — Albany Patroons (5th yr. pro; The Basketball League; Alcorn State; Cartersville HS) … in the best-of-three East Conference finals of The Basketball League playoffs, the Patroons swept the visiting Huntsville Hurricanes last Thursday and Friday. Albany won 123-104 and 110-108 to capture the series and move on to face the Kokomo Bobkats in the league semifinals (East v. Midwest). Mosby totaled 36 points, 13 assists, 12 rebounds, and one assist in the two-game sweep.
