Athletes Beyond Bartow: Mosby's triple-double highlights this week's performances

Former Cartersville High School basketball standout A.J. Mosby recorded a triple-double Saturday for his Shreveport Mavericks team in The Basketball League. Meanwhile, three local baseball professionals continue their work in Major League Baseball and the MiLB.



PRO BASEBALL

SAM HOWARD — Pittsburgh Pirates (8th-year pro; Cartersville HS)… suffered his roughest outing of the season Friday night, but the Pirates held on to beat the Cleveland Indians 11-10. Howard, who entered in the seventh inning with Pittsburgh leading 11-1, was charged with six earned runs on four hits that included a grand slam and two walks in two-thirds of an inning. The outing was far from the norm this season for the lefty who had held opponents scoreless in 26 of his last 33 appearances. For the season, Howard has a 2-2 record with a 4.44 ERA in 26-1/3 innings of work. He has 35 strikeouts and opponents have just a .165 batting average against him.

CONNOR JUSTUS — Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (6th-year pro; Miami Marlins organization; Cartersville HS)… starting in three of five games at home this week against Charlotte, Justus was 2-for-10 with a triple and three walks. He also scored two runs. Through 12 games with the Triple-A Shrimp, the infielder has a .222 batting average in 40 official at bats. Defensively, the 26-year-old has made only one error in 45 total chances at three different positions since moving up to Jacksonville. He has played shortstop, third base, and second base. The Jumbo Shrimp (23-17) are currently 4-1/2 games behind the Durham Bulls in the Triple A East, Southeast Division. Jacksonville hosts Durham in a six game series this week.

ANTHONY SEIGLER — Hudson Valley Renegades (4th-year pro; New York Yankees organization; Cartersville HS)… was 3-for-17 at the plate last week with a double and four walks in five starts at home against Jersey Shore. Through 13 games played this season, Seigler has a .156 batting average in 45 official at bats. The Renegades, who currently lead the High-A East, North Division with a 25-16 record, have a six game home series this week against the Wilmington Blue Rocks.


PRO BASKETBALL

A.J. MOSBYShreveport Mavericks (3rd year pro; Cartersville HS)… recorded a triple-double Saturday in the Mavericks 149-102 win over the Waco Royals. Mosby scored 24 points and had 13 assists and 11 rebounds in the win. He also added three steals and one blocked shot. In Thursday’s 116-110 loss to the Enid Outlaws, the 25-year-old scored 26 points and had five assists, five rebounds, and a pair of steals. Shreveport (15-7, third place in The Basketball League’s Central Division) has its final two games this week against Waco and the Midtown Prestige.
