Athletes Beyond Bartow: Phillips matches career day in win at Samford

Former Cartersville Hurricane wide receiver Sam Phillips tied his career high with eleven receptions (98 yards) in Chattanooga’s 47-24 win at 17th-ranked Samford this past Saturday. His previous high was set in the Mocs’ matchup last year with the Bulldogs. His two-game numbers against Samford are 22 catches for 261 yards. Meanwhile, on the NFL gridiron, Trevor Lawrence passed for 279 yards and one touchdown Sunday but the Jacksonville Jaguars lost to the visiting Houston Texans, 37-17.


NFL


TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL; 3rd-yr. pro; QB; Clemson; Cartersville HS) … was 27-for-40 passing for 279 yards and one touchdown but the Jaguars lost at home to the Houston Texans, 37-17 Sunday. He also threw one interception. The touchdown pass was a 26-yarder early in the fourth quarter to Christian Kirk. He added three rushing attempts for 12 yards. Jacksonville (1-2) plays the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. in London, England.





PGA SENIOR CHAMPIONS TOUR


JASON BOHN — PGA Tour Champions (Acworth resident; Cartersville Country Club member) … shot 4-over-par (77-71) and missed the cut at the PURE Insurance Championship this past weekend held at Spyglass Hill and Pebble Beach in Monterrey, California.



COLLEGE FOOTBALL



KOLBE BENHAM — Marist College (R-So., Cartersville HS) … had two tackles including one tackle for loss as the Red Foxes won Saturday at Valparaiso 36-30 in overtime. Marist (1-2, 1-1 Pioneer Football League) hosts Stetson University this Saturday afternoon.


CARLOS DEL RIO-WILSON — Syracuse University (R-So., Cartersville HS) … entered in the fourth quarter at quarterback and had one rushing attempt for four yards as the Orange defeated visiting Army, 29-16. Syracuse (4-0) hosts Clemson on Saturday afternoon to begin play in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

JONAH GAMBILL — University of Memphis (R-Jr., Cartersville HS) … a starter on the Tigers’ offensive line, Gambill was part of a unit that pro-duced 399 yards of total offense but lost to Missouri in St. Louis, 34-27. Memphis (3-1, 1-0) hosts Boise State on Saturday afternoon.





SHADRE HURST — Tulane University (R-Fr., Cartersville HS) … an offensive lineman, Hurst saw action in the Green Wave’s 36-7 home victory over Nicholls this past Saturday night. The Tulane offense rolled up 408 yards of total offense including 150 rushing yards. The Green Wave (3-1) host UAB on Saturday.


TYLER MARTIN — Berry College (So., Cass HS) … an offensive lineman for the Vikings, Martin saw action in this past Saturday’s 49-16 win at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. The Vikings rushed for 261 yards of their 495 total in the victory. Berry (3-0) entertains Trinity University (Texas) on Saturday afternoon.

SAM PHILLIPS — UT Chattanooga (R-So., Cartersville HS) … in a 47-24 win at Samford this past Saturday, Phillips had 11 receptions for 98 yards including a 31-yarder. He leads the Mocs with 27 catches this season totaling 273 yards and three touchdowns. Chattanooga (3-1, 2-0 Southern Conference) travels to Spartanburg, South Carolina this Saturday night to take on Wofford.

DEVONTE ROSS — Troy University (So., Cartersville HS) … had three receptions for 55 yards including one catch for 38 yards in the Trojans’ 27-24 win this past Saturday at home over Western Kentucky. Ross also had one kickoff return of 16 yards. Troy (2-2, 0-1 Sun Belt Conference) returns to conference play on Saturday night at Georgia State.

COURTNEY SLOCUM — Mars Hill University (Sr., Adairsville HS) … had one tackle this past Saturday in the Lions’ 16-14 home win over Barton College. MHU (3-0, 2-0 South Atlantic Conference) visits Limestone University on Saturday afternoon in another SAC matchup.

EVAN SLOCUM — Wake Forest University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … had four tackles including one tackle for a loss but the Demon Deacons lost at home to Georgia Tech this past Saturday 30-16. Wake Forest (3-1, 0-1 ACC) has a bye week before traveling to Clemson on Saturday, October 7.





COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL


MADELYN ORTON — LaGrange College (So., Rydal, GA resident, Cornerstone Prep) … contributed three digs in a straight sets loss last Monday at Belhaven University (Mississippi).

The Panthers also had a five-set victory at Wesleyan College Saturday and a straight-sets loss to Berea College (Kentucky) but stat lines were not available as of Monday afternoon. LaGrange (2-6, 1-2) plays at Coastal Georgia College on Wednesday before hosting Covenant College and Piedmont University on Saturday.


MEREDITH ORTON — LaGrange College (So., Rydal, GA resident, Cornerstone Prep) … had three kills, seven digs, and one block in a three-set loss last Monday at Belhaven (Mississippi).

She then had five kills and one ace against Berea (Kentucky) this past Saturday in a straight-sets loss. Also on Saturday, the Panthers defeated Wesleyan College in a five-set match but stat lines were not available as of Monday afternoon. LaGrange (2-6, 1-2) plays at Coastal Georgia College on Wednesday before hosting Covenant College and Piedmont University on Saturday.


MARIA PILIPOSYANS — Reinhardt University (So., Cass HS) … played in only one set as the Eagles won 25-11, 25-12, 25-19 last Tuesday at home against St. Andrews University (North Carolina). This past Saturday during a straight sets loss to Columbia International University (South Carolina) she finished with two kills, one block, and one dig playing in all three sets as a middle hitter. Reinhardt (11-3, 4-2 Appalachian Athletic Conference) plays at Brenau on Tuesday night before hosting Tennessee Wesleyan and Bryan College on Thursday and Saturday.

ABBEY CRAIG — Reinhardt University (So., Cartersville HS) … saw action off the Eagles’ bench last Wednesday in a 2-0 home win over Columbia International University. Reinhardt (4-4, 4-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference) plays at Montreat College on Wednesday and entertains Kentucky Christian University on Saturday.


BRADY CRAIG — Reinhardt University (So., Cartersville HS) … a starting defender, Craig played all 90 minutes of both wins this past week as the Eagles beat Columbia International University last Wednesday 3-1 and edged Georgia Gwinnett College this past Saturday, 1-0. RU (4-2-3, 2-2 AAC) visits Montreat College on Wednesday night at hosts Kentucky Christian University on Saturday.

Emily Bush

EMILY BUSH — Young Harris College (So., Cartersville HS) … partnered with Luciana Bejarano and won their first-round doubles match over opponents from Francis Marion University last Friday. The duo then lost in the Round of 32 to a team from Georgia College at the ITA Division II Southeast Regional Championships in Sumter, South Carolina. In the ITA singles tournament, Bush defeated Sophia Jaramillo of Lincoln Memorial University 6-4, 6-0 before falling to Nikoline Gullacksen of Columbus State University in the Round of 32. Young Harris will host its Fall Invitational this Saturday and Sunday.


BRYCE VAN ORDER — Piedmont University (Sr., Woodland HS) … lost his opening singles match this past Saturday at the South Regional ITA Championships, falling to Bernardo Messineo of North Carolina Wesleyan 6-3, 7-6. He then lost his consolation match 6-1, 6-3 to Jackson Davis of Sewanee. The Lions will return to action October 13-14 at the Belmont Abbey Hidden Duals.



COLLEGE GOLF


ANDERSON McCARY — Birmingham Southern College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … carded rounds of 98-91-90 (279) at the Rhodes College Fall Invitational held Sunday and Monday in Tunica, Mississippi. The 17-team NCAA D-III 54-hole event was won by Rhodes on the 6950-yard, par-72 Tunica National Golf Club course. BSC finished last in the tournament. The next event for the Panthers is the West Pines Collegiate on October 3-4 in Douglasville hosted by Oglethorpe University.
