Athletes Beyond Bartow: Pro and college updates

This week's update for professional and college athletes from Bartow County.

 

PRO FOOTBALL

TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (Rookie season; Cartersville HS)… finished his fifth NFL start 23-for-33 passing for 273 yards with one touchdown and one interception. His short touchdown pass came on a fourth and one play with 9:55 remaining in the second quarter. The nifty touch pass to Jacob Hollister in the back left corner of the end zone capped a nine-play, 70-yard drive that took 5:01 off the clock and cut the Tennessee lead to 14-13 at the time. The 6-6 signal caller added a four-yard touchdown run one minute into the fourth quarter on a designed quarterback draw. His score narrowed the Titans’ lead to 31-19 at that point. Lawrence finished with 28 rushing yards on seven attempts. The 37-19 loss was the 20th consecutive for Jacksonville dating back to Week 2 of the 2020 season. The streak is the third-longest in NFL history and the longest since 1976. The Jaguars (0-5) play the Miami Dolphins this Sunday (9:30 a.m. EDT) in London.


COLLEGE FOOTBALL

TERRY BERDIN — Reinhardt University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … had just one carry for three yards Saturday in the Eagles’ 49-35 home win over Bluefield University (Virginia). Reinhardt (4-2, 1-0 Mid-South Conference) play at Point University this Saturday afternoon.

CHRIS BLACKSTON — University of West Georgia (Sr., Adairsville HS)… a regular starter in the Wolves’ secondary, Blackston did not record any stats in a 40-21 win Saturday night at Mississippi College. 13th-ranked UWG (5-1, 3-1) travels to Pensacola to challenge No. 1 West Florida this Saturday night.

BRYCE BURGESS — Reinhardt University (Jr., Adairsville HS) … rushed for 12 yards on six attempts in Saturday’s win in Waleska over Bluefield University. The Eagles (4-2, 1-0) continue Mid-South Conference play this Saturday at Point University.

TREY CREAMER — UNC Charlotte (R-Sr., Cartersville HS)… had two tackles and broke up one pass as the 49ers won at Florida International 45-33. Charlotte (4-2, 2-0 Conference-USA) hosts Florida Atlantic Thursday night in a nationally televised game on CBS Sports Network.

JONATHAN CRUZ — UNC Charlotte (Sr., Cartersville HS)… was true on a 42-yard field goal at the end of the second quarter, made all six of his extra point attempts, and booted six of eight kickoffs for touchbacks in Saturday’s 45-33 win in Miami over Florida International.

JORDAN FERGUSON — Middle Tennessee State University (R-Jr., Cartersville HS)… the Blue Raiders’ starting defensive lineman had three tackles including a pair of sacks in Saturday’s 41-13 loss at Liberty. MTSU (2-4, 1-2 Conference-USA) plays at UConn Friday night.

DYLAN FORMAN — Shorter University (R-So., Woodland HS)… made a tackle in the second quarter after his team’s field goal attempt was blocked and recovered by West Alabama. The Hawks went on the lose to the 10th-ranked Tigers 44-7 Saturday at Barron Stadium. Shorter (2-4, 0-3 Gulf South Conference) hosts Mississippi College Saturday.

JONAH GAMBILL — University of Memphis (Fr., Cartersville HS) … the Tigers’ left tackle contributed to his team’s 99-play, 614-yard offensive performance but Memphis lost Saturday at Tulsa 35-29. Memphis (3-3, 0-2 American Athletic Conference) hosts Navy Thursday night in the Liberty Bowl on ESPN.

ZAY JACKSON — Missouri Baptist University (Fr., Cass HS) … the Spartans’ free safety made a second quarter solo tackle in Saturday’s 34-17 home loss to Roosevelt Universitiy. MBU (3-3, 0-2 American Midwest Conference) hosts 18th-ranked Saint Xavier University Saturday.

JaCOREY JOHNS — Wake Forest University (R-So., Cartersville HS)… recorded one solo tackle and was credited with one quarterback hurry Saturday at Syracuse as the 16th-ranked Demon Deacons won 40-37 in overtime. Wake Forest (6-0, 4-0 ACC) has a bye week before traveling to West Point, New York October 23 to take on Army.

MANNY JONES — Colorado State University (Grad Student, Woodland HS) … made three total tackles including one solo, one sack, and one quarterback hurry in the Rams’ 32-14 win Saturday over visiting San Jose State. CSU (2-3, 1-0 Mountain West Conference) travels to Albuquerque Saturday evening to play New Mexico.

TITUS JONES — Colorado State University (R-So., Woodland HS) … had a tackle assist Saturday in the Rams’ first kickoff of the day after taking an early 7-0 lead. CSU went on to win 32-14. The Rams play at New Mexico Saturday.

LA’KWAYME JUPITER — North Carolina Wesleyan (Fr., Cartersville HS) … the Battling Bishops’ nose guard made two tackles for loss Saturday in a 21-0 win over Greensboro College. North Carolina Wesleyan (3-3, 3-1 USA South Athletic Conference) hosts Maryville College Saturday at noon.

JACOB POTTER — Kennesaw State University (Sr., Adairsville HS) … the Owls long snapper for field goals, extra points, and punts in a 34-15 Big South Conference win at Hampton University. 17th-ranked KSU (4-1, 1-0) entertains North Carolina A&T State in another conference game this Saturday evening.

NICK ROOT — Carson-Newman University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … a starter at left guard, Root was instrumental in an offense that produced 229 total yards in a 33-27 loss at Catawba. The Eagles (0-5, 0-3 Southern Athletic Conference) will seek their first win at home Saturday against Lenoir-Rhyne.

MATTHEW SURRETT — Olivet Nazarene University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … the Tigers’ starting center was part of an offensive unit that accumulated 486 yards of total offense in a 45-38 win at Saint Xavier. ONU (4-1, 2-0 Mid-States Football Association) hosts St. Ambrose Saturday afternoon.

BRANDON WADE — University West Florida (R-So., Cartersville HS) … the defensive lineman had one tackle as the top-ranked Argonauts won at North Greenville University, 52-10. UWF (5-0, 2-0 Gulf South Conference) hosts 13th-ranked West Georgia Saturday afternoon.

BRYCE WILKINS — Reinhardt University (So., Cartersville HS)… the Eagles’ starting guard was part of an offensive unit that compiled 484 yards of total offense in a 49-35 conference win Saturday over Bluefield University. NAIA 12th-ranked Reinhardt (4-2, 1-0) plays at Point University Saturday afternoon.


CROSS COUNTRY

BILL ARCHER — University of Montevallo (Fr., Cartersville HS) … finished 203rd of 340 runners Saturday as the Falcons placed 18th of 33 teams at the University of Alabama-Huntsville XC Invitational. Archer completed the 8K race in 27:18. The race was won by Pittsburg State followed by Lee University and UAH. Montevallo competes again Saturday at the University of Alabama-Birmingham Classic. It will be the Falcons’ final race before the Gulf South Conference Championship October 23.


SOCCER


COURTNEY RHEA — Berry College (Sr., Cartersville HS) … came off the bench and took one shot in the Vikings’ 2-0 win Sunday at Hendrix College (Arkansas). Berry (7-5, 2-2 Southern Athletic Association) hosts Birmingham-Southern College Friday night and Millsaps College (Mississippi) Sunday afternoon.

RUSSELL SHEALY — Syracuse University (R-Jr., Cartersville native, Darlington HS) … started in goal and made three saves as the Orange beat visiting Colgate last Tuesday 3-0. He then started in net Friday night and made a pair of saves in a scoreless tie with North Carolina State. Syracuse (6-5-2, 1-3-1 ACC) plays at Bucknell Monday night and at Boston College Friday night.

MADISON SHOOK — Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (Fr., Cass HS)… was a starting midfielder for the Fillies but had no recorded stats in a 8-0 loss Friday at Gordon State CC. ABAC (2-4-1, 1-4-1 GCAA) hosts Georgia Military College Tuesday and Gordon State Saturday.


GOLF

BUCK BRUMLOW — University of Georgia (Fr., Cartersville HS) … at the SEC Match Play

Championship, Brumlow defeated Kentucky’s Zach Norris 1-up Sunday as Georgia won 3.50 to 0.50. He then lost 3&1 to Vanderbilt’s Reid Davenport Monday as the Commodores edged the Bulldogs 3-2. In Tuesday's 3-1 consolation round win over LSU, Brumlow was leading LSU's Trey Winstead 1-up when three of his teammates sealed the Bulldogs' victory. Next up for UGA is the Eagle Point Intercollegiate October 25-26 in Wilmington, North Carolina.

CHANC WILLIS — Reinhardt University (So., Cartersville HS) … finished 33rd in a field of 59 players and fourth for his team at the Tennessee Wesleyan Bojangles Intercollegiate Invitational Saturday and Sunday. The 54-hole event was played on the par-72, 7,170 yard Links of Kahite Golf Club in Vonore, Tennessee. Reinhardt placed third of nine teams in the tournament behind winner Point University and runner-up Dalton State. The Eagles’ next tournament is the Appalachian Athletic Conference Preview October 18 at Barnsley Gardens Resort.
