Athletes Beyond Bartow: Pro baseball reaches All-Star break, Weekley climbs Schwab Cup points list

MASON BARNETT — MLB Athletics (5th-year pro; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … the 25-year-old right-hand pitcher made two relief appearances last week in the Athletics’ losses at the Detroit Tigers and the Chicago White Sox. Barnett walked two at Detroit, but did not allow a run or a hit. In Chicago, he yielded three earned runs on three hits and one walk. At the All-Star break, he has a 1-0 record with two saves out of the Athletics’ bullpen. In 13 appearances, Barnett has a 4.64 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 21-1/3 innings. The Athletics (41-55) are in fourth place in the American League West, trailing the Texas Rangers by eight games. They are 6-1/2 games out of a Wild Card playoff berth. The A’s will be in Sacramento this weekend for a three-game series against the Washington Nationals.

LOGAN MARTIN — Richmond Flying Squirrels (San Francisco Giants Double-A affiliate; 4th-year pro; Kentucky; Cartersville HS) … made two relief appearances on July 6 and last Friday, and picked up two pitching wins in his rehab assignment with the Arizona Complex Giants. He totaled 3-1/3 innings in the two outings and allowed one earned run on three hits with no walks. The 24-year-old struck out five. Martin, who is 3-0 with a 3.41 ERA at Double-A Richmond, has spent several weeks on the injured list and was sent to the Arizona Complex on June 27 for his current rehab assignment.

ANTHONY SEIGLER — Boston Red Sox (MLB; 9th-year pro; Cartersville HS) … started all six games this week for the Red Sox and went 3-for-22, including two walks and three RBI. One of his hits was a two-run homer last Friday against the New York Mets at Citi Field. Since being recalled in late June from Triple-A Worcester, Seigler has a .257 batting average, including two homers and six RBI in 74 official at-bats. Boston (46-48) entered the All-Star break on a nine-game winning streak and in third place in the American League East. The Red Sox trail the Tampa Bay Rays by 10 games in the division, but are only 1/2 game behind the Seattle Mariners and the Minnesota Twins in the American League Wild Card race. Boston returns to action this weekend, hosting the Rays on Friday through Sunday at Fenway Park.

INDEPENDENT PRO BASEBALL

MICAH EARWOOD — Sussex County Miners (Frontier League; 1st year pro; Southeastern University; Cartersville HS) … entered in the sixth inning last Thursday for a 1-2/3 innings relief appearance at the Lake Erie Crushers, and allowed one earned run on two hits and one walk during a Miners’ 5-4 loss. Earwood is 0-1 with a 7.15 ERA in 11-1/3 innings at the All-Star break. He has 13 strikeouts and has faced 56 batters. Sussex County (28-27) trails the New York Boulders by 4-1/2 games in the Atlantic East Division. The Miners return to action this weekend with a three-game series at the Brockton Rox.

COHEN WILBANKS — Evansville Otters (Frontier League; 2nd year pro; Georgia Gwinnett College; Cartersville HS) …  saw action as the Otters’ catcher in three games last week and went 1-for-7 at the plate, including one walk and one run scored. Evansville went 2-4 for the week. Wilbanks has a .220 batting average, including one home run and six RBI in 74 plate appearances. The Otters are 33-22 at the All-Star break and in second place in the Midwest Central Division. Evansville returns to action this weekend with a three-game home series with the Windy City ThunderBolts.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS

BOO WEEKLEY — 29-year pro; Cartersville Country Club member; Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College; Jay, Florida resident — carded rounds of 68-67-70-66 (9-under par) to finish runner-up to Zach Johnson at the Kaulig Companies Championship last weekend at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. Weekley, who trains regularly with teaching professional Scott Hamilton at the Cartersville Country Club, has climbed to fourth place in the current Charles Schwab Cup rankings for PGA Tour Champions through 15 events. He won the Insperity Invitational earlier this season, three shots ahead of Ernie Els.  A 2008 Ryder Cup team member, Weekley has made 13 of 15 cuts in 2026 and has two runner-up finishes. His season includes four Top Tens and nine Top 25 finishes. The 52-year-old won three times on the PGA Tour, including the 2007 and 2008 Verizon Heritage and the 2013 Colonial Invitational.
