Athletes Beyond Bartow: Seigler and Brewers remain in first, Brumlow earns his first Top Ten finish

ANTHONY SEIGLER — Milwaukee Brewers (Major League Baseball; 8th-year pro; Cartersville HS) … had seven official at-bats last week and appeared in two games at Atlanta and two at home against the New York Mets. Seigler was 2-for-7 (both singles) with one walk. The Brewers’ third baseman/designated hitter is 3-for-12 in August after starting 5-for-27 in July — his first month after being called up from Triple-A Nashville. His MLB totals include a .205 average with three RBI and two stolen bases. Entering the week, Milwaukee (73-44) has a 5-½ game lead over the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central Division. The Brewers have three home games with the Pirates and three games at the Cincinnati Reds this week.

MASON BARNETT — Las Vegas Aviators (Oakland A’s Triple-A affiliate; 4th-year pro; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … made a six-inning start and picked up his sixth pitching victory of the season this past Saturday in a 3-2 win at the Salt Lake Bees. The 24-year-old righty allowed one earned run on three hits and two walks while recording nine strikeouts. Barnett is 6-2 this season in 23 appearances and 21 starts. He has a 5.63 ERA in 110-⅓ innings pitched with 116 strikeouts. Las Vegas (65-49 overall) has clinched a postseason berth by winning the first half of the West Division standings. The Aviators are 16-23 in the second half. They have a six-game home series this week against the Tacoma Rainiers.


LOGAN MARTIN — Quad Cities River Bandits (Kansas City Royals High-Class A affiliate; 3rd-year pro; Kentucky; Cartersville HS) … made a two-inning start at home this past Sunday against the Beloit Sky Carp and did not allow a run or a hit while striking out three. The 24-year-old received no decision. It was his first mound appearance since July 24, and his season ERA dropped to 3.87. Martin has an 8-4 record in 19 starts. He has 68 strikeouts in 81-⅓ innings with a 1.24 WHIP. The River Bandits (61-46,22-19 second-half standings) trail Beloit by two games. Quad Cities has a six-game series this week at the Cedar Rapids Kernels.



PGA TOUR AMERICAS


BUCK BRUMLOW — (1st year pro; University of Georgia; Cartersville HS) … had his best week as a professional with a top ten finish at the BioSteel Championship at Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, last Thursday through Sunday. Brumlow fired rounds of 65-66-68-66 (265, 15-under par) and finished ten shots behind tournament winner Michael Brennan on the par-70, 7,033-yard layout. Connor Howe was runner-up at 20-under par. For Brumlow, it was his second cut made in five events for the 22-year-old, and he earned a check for $5,625. He carded two eagles, 18 birdies, and just seven bogeys for the 72-hole event. The next tournament on the PGA Tour Americas circuit is the Manitoba Open at Breezy Bend Country Club, August 21-24.
