Athletes Beyond Bartow: Shealy records two shutouts, Cruz nails his first FG for Ole Miss

In MiLB action this past week, Cartersville product Sam Howard made a pair of scoreless appearances for the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens while fellow former Hurricane Anthony Seigler and the Hudson Valley Renegades wrapped up their 2022 campaign in the High Class A South Atlantic League.


Toledo is facing an elimination number of 10 games with just 16 to play in the International League West playoff race. Hudson Valley missed the playoffs by finishing two games behind the Brooklyn Cyclones in the SAL North's second half race.


In college football this past Saturday, Jonathan Cruz made his first field goal as an Ole Miss Rebel to headline performances of a dozen former Hurricanes and sixteen local college football contributors.


On the soccer pitch, Cartersville resident and Syracuse goalkeeper Russell Shealy recorded a pair of shutouts in net for the 24th-ranked Orange as they beat UConn and Notre Dame.




PRO BASEBALL


SAM HOWARD — Toledo Mud Hens (9th yr. pro; Triple-A Detroit Tigers organization; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS) … made a pair of scoreless appearances last Thursday and Friday at home against St. Paul. The lefty had a walk and a strikeout Thursday facing three batters and earned his eighth hold of the season in a 5-2 Mud Hens victory. On Friday, Howard allowed a leadoff triple but got out of the inning facing the minimum when a fly out to left field turned into a double play at home plate when left fielder Brendon Davis gunned down a runner tagging up from third. The Mud Hens held on to win the game 3-2. Toledo (74-60) is in third place and 7.5 games behind division leading Nashville in the International League West. The Mud Hens play a six game series Tuesday through Sunday at Indianapolis.


ANTHONY SEIGLER — Hudson Valley Renegades (5th yr. pro; High Class-A New York Yankees organization; Cartersville HS) … appeared in five games this past week at Wilmington to close out the Renegades regular season slate as Hudson Valley missed the playoffs by finishing two games behind the Brooklyn Cyclones in the second half standings. Seigler was 6-for-17 for the week with four walks, a double, and two RBIs. The switch hitter completed the season with a .236 batting average, seven homers, 45 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases. The Renegades full season record was 71-59.



PRO FOOTBALL


TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL, 2nd-yr. pro; Clemson; Cartersville HS) … was 24-for-42 passing Sunday for 275 yards and one touchdown in the season opener. He was intercepted once and also ran twice for four yards in the Jaguars 28-22 loss at the Washington Commanders. His third quarter touchdown pass was a three-yarder to James Robinson with 8:50 remaining in the period. The TD pass cut the Washington lead to 14-9 at the time. His ensuing two-point conversion pass failed. The Jags built a 22-14 lead early in the fourth quarter before giving up a pair of touchdowns in the final nine minutes. Jacksonville (0-1) hosts the Indianapolis Colts Sunday.


COLLEGE FOOTBALL

HAYDEN CAGLE — Berry College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … a starter on the Vikings’ offensive line that powered past LaGrange College with 540 yards of total offense in a 56-10 home win. Berry rolled up 195 yards rushing on 38 attempts. The unranked Vikings (2-0) host D-III 6th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Saturday at 1 p.m.


JONATHAN CRUZ — Ole Miss (Sr., Cartersville HS) … made his first field goal as a Rebel and was true on all six PAT kicks Saturday as Mississippi cruised by visiting Central Arkansas 59-3.

His 41-yard field goal finished off a 7-play drive and came on the final play of the second quarter sending the Rebels to the intermission up 31-0. Cruz also handled kickoff duties with two of his six kicks going for touchbacks. Ole Miss (2-0) travels to Atlanta Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff at Georgia Tech.


JORDAN FERGUSON — Middle Tennessee State (R-Sr., Cartersville HS) … forced a fumble and had five total tackles including one tackle for loss as the Blue Raiders won 34-19 at Colorado State. Ferguson, who played his high school football at Norcross and St. Francis Academy, graduated from Cartersville High School. The 6-2, 271-pound defensive lineman was preseason All Conference USA and is on the watch list in 2022 for the Rotary Lombardi (nation’s best offensive or defensive lineman) and Bednarik Awards (nation’s top defensive player). MTSU (1-1) hosts Tennessee State Saturday night at 6 p.m.


DYLAN FORMAN — Shorter University (Sr., Woodland HS) … saw action in the Hawks’ 34-21 win at home this past Saturday over Catawba College but did not collect a stat line. Shorter (2-0) hosts Albany State this Saturday in a 12 noon kickoff.

JONAH GAMBILL — University of Memphis (R-So., Cartersville HS) … was a starter at offensive guard as the Tigers sank Navy 37-13 this past Saturday in Annapolis. Memphis accumulated 506 yards of total offense (415 passing) and evened their season mark at 1-1. The Tigers host Arkansas State Saturday night in Liberty Bowl Stadium.


GAVIN GEROS — Shorter University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … saw action against Catawba College but did not crack the boxscore in the Hawks’ 34-21 home win. Shorter (2-0) hosts Albany State this Saturday.


SHADRE HURST — Tulane University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … recorded no stats, but saw his first collegiate action this past Saturday for the Green Wave in their 52-0 home win over Alcorn State. Tulane (2-0) travels to Manhattan this Saturday for a 2 p.m. kickoff at Kansas State.


QUANTE JENNINGS — Presbyterian College (So., Cartersville HS) … was credited with a solo tackle on the opening kickoff in the Blue Hose’ 21-13 home win over Virginia-Lynchburg Saturday. Presyterian (1-1) travels to Cullowhee, North Carolina this Saturday afternoon to play at Western Carolina.


JACOREY JOHNS — Wake Forest University (R-Jr., Cartersville HS) … made three tackles and forced one fumble this past Saturday in a 45-25 win at Vanderbilt in Nashville. The 23rd-ranked Demon Deacons (2-0) host Liberty University this Saturday for their annual homecoming game.


TITUS JONES — Colorado State University (R-Jr., Woodland HS) … saw action but recorded no stat line in a 34-19 home loss to Middle Tennessee. The Rams (0-2) travel to Pullman to challenge Washington State this Saturday afternoon.


LA’KWAYME JUPITER — North Carolina Wesleyan (So., Cartersville HS) … a starter on the Battling Bishops’ defensive line, Jupiter had five tackle assists and recovered one fumble this past Saturday in a 45-0 loss at Shenandoah University. North Carolina Wesleyan (0-2) has its home opener this Saturday at noon against Bridgewater State University (Massachusetts).


SAM PHILLIPS — UT-Chattanooga (So., Cartersville HS) … started at wide receiver, made a solo tackle on a third quarter kickoff, and was targeted for passes twice in the second half without a reception in the FCS 10th-ranked Mocs’ 38-20 win last Saturday at Eastern Illinois. Chattanooga (2-0) hosts North Alabama this Saturday night for homecoming.


JACOB RAY — Berry College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … caught a 61-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter this past Saturday during the Vikings’ 56-10 home victory over LaGrange College. The unranked Vikings (2-0) host D-III 6th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Saturday at 1 p.m.


EVAN SLOCUM — Wake Forest University (So., Cartersville HS) … made a fourth quarter tackle on kickoff coverage in the Demon Deacons’ 45-25 win at Vanderbilt. 23rd-ranked Wake Forest hosts Liberty this Saturday evening.


KALEB SPEIGHTS — Shorter University (So., Cass HS) … in the Hawks’ 34-21 home win over Catawba College, Speights kicked off six times for a 48.3 yard average. Shorter (2-0) entertains Albany State this Saturday at Barron Stadium in Rome.


BRANDON WADE — University of West Florida (R-Jr., Cartersville HS) … made a solo tackle from his defensive line position in the third quarter this past Saturday during the Argonauts’ 49-10 win at Southwest Baptist (Missouri). NCAA D-II 6th-ranked UWF (2-0) has a bye week prior to opening Gulf South Conference play September 24 at home against Delta State.


CROSS COUNTRY

BILL ARCHER — University of Montevallo (So., Cartersville HS) … ran third for the Falcons and eighth overall individually as Montevallo finished second of nine teams at the University of North Alabama 8K on Saturday. The race included 113 runners. Archer finished in 25:56.99. Montevallo will host the Falcon Classic Friday morning.


VOLLEYBALL

MARIA PILIPOSYANS — Reinhardt University (Fr., Cass HS) … made a pair of starts and totaled 10 kills, one dig, and four blocks as the Eagles won in three straight sets last Thursday at home over Point University and Saturday at Columbia (SC) University. Reinhardt (4-7, 2-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference) hosts conference matches Friday night and Saturday afternoon against Bluefield State (WV) and Kentucky Christian.



SOCCER

ABBIE CRAIG — Reinhardt University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … did not score, but took three shots including one shot on goal in the Eagles’ 10-0 win Saturday over Bluefield State (WV). Reinhardt (1-3, 1-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference) travels to Tennessee Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon and will host Union College (KY) Saturday afternoon.


HAVYN ISAAC — Young Harris College (Jr., Adairsville HS) … yielded three goals and had three saves in a 3-0 loss and start in net last Monday at University of Montevallo. The Mountain Lions also suffered a 1-0 loss Saturday at home to Georgia College. YHC (0-5, 0-1 Peach Belt Conference) plays at nearby University of North Georgia Wednesday night and hosts Albany State Saturday. Both matches are againt PBC opponents.


CHLOE RAVISH — Shorter University (Fr., Woodland HS) … the goalkeeper faced no shots but entered in a reserve role last Tuesday during a 5-0 home loss to South Carolina-Beaufort. She then started and made eight saves in a 5-0 loss Saturday at Christian Brothers University in Memphis. The Hawks (0-6-1, 0-2 Gulf South Conference) also lost Sunday at Union University. Shorter hosts Delta State University Friday night and Mississippi College Sunday.


MIA SCOTT — Reinhardt University (Fr., Adairsville HS) … saw action in a reserve role this past Saturday as the Eagles blanked Bluefield State (WV) 10-0. Reinhardt (1-3, 1-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference) travels to Tennessee Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon and will host Union College (KY) Saturday afternoon.


RUSSELL SHEALY — Syracuse University (R-Sr., Cartersville resident, Darlington HS) … in a pair of starts last Monday and Saturday, Shealy made six saves at UConn in a 5-0 win and made one save in a 1-0 shutout of 22nd-ranked Notre Dame. The 24th-ranked Orange (4-0-1, 1-0 ACC) host Niagra Tuesday night and return to Atlantic Coast Conference play Friday night at Clemson.


GOLF

BUCK BRUMLOW — University of Georgia (So., Cartersville HS) … fired rounds of 66-71-71 for a 208, 8-under-par total last Wednesday and Thursday at The Frederica Cup hosted by the par-72, 7,309-yard layout at Frederica Golf Club on St. Simons Island. The Bulldogs finished fourth of eight teams and Brumlow tied for 17th place of 48 players. Vanderbilt (69-under) won the 54-hole event followed by Oklahoma (-66), Texas Tech (-46), and Georgia (-44). Georgia finished ahead of Mississippi State, Ohio State, Arkansas, and TCU. Next for the Bulldogs will be the SEC Match Play Championship September 25-27 at Old Overton Club in Vestavia Hills, Alabama.
