Athletes Beyond Bartow: Updates from college football, cross country, golf, soccer, and pro baseball


The month of September not only brings the final few weeks of the professional baseball season, but it also launches the Fall collegiate sports scene. This edition of Athletes Beyond Bartow includes professional baseball along with college football, cross country, golf, and soccer updates.

 

PRO BASEBALL


Sam Howard

SAM HOWARD — Pittsburgh Pirates (8th-year pro; Cartersville HS) . . . Howard is back in the Pittsburgh bullpen after missing most of July and August recovering from a right oblique strain. Since returning to the Pirates August 28, the southpaw has made five relief appearances and accumulated 3-and-2/3 innings of work. In that same stretch he’s been touched for six runs (five earned) on six hits and four walks with four strikeouts. For the year, the 28-year-old has a 2-4 record with a 6.48 ERA in 43 appearances.


CONNOR JUSTUS — Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (6th-year pro; Miami Marlins organization; Cartersville HS)… the former Georgia Tech middle infielder started two games for the Shrimp last week against the Durham Bulls and finished 1-for-5 at the plate with a walk and one RBI. With time split this season between Triple-A Jacksonville and Double-A Pensacola, the 26-year-old has a .199 batting average in 216 official at-bats with two home runs and 23 RBIs.


LUKE SCHILTZ - ACL Rangers (Texas Rangers organization; 3rd year pro; Cartersville native; Stoneman Douglas HS, FL). . . made his tenth pitching appearance Sunday for the Arizona Complex League Rangers facing the Brewers Gold. The righthander pitched an inning and two-thirds in the sixth and seventh allowing three earned runs on three hits and two walks. He struck out three in the appearance. The 21-year-old has a 9.00 ERA in 14 innings with 18 strikeouts.


ANTHONY SEIGLER — Hudson Valley Renegades (4th-year pro; New York Yankees organization; Cartersville HS)… remains on the 7-day injured list and has not appeared in a game for the Renegades since August 5. Hudson Valley (64-43) leads the High A East-North Division by nine games over Aberdeen with two weeks remaining in the regular season. Seigler. 22, has appeared in 41 games with a .219 batting average in 151 official at-bats. He has four homers and 24 RBIs.

PRO FOOTBALL MILLER FORRISTALL -- Tennessee Titans (TE, 1st year pro; Cartersville HS) — After being among the final cuts last Tuesday, when the Titans trimmed their roster to 53 players, Forristall signed with Tennessee's practice squad.



COLLEGE FOOTBALL

NICK BAILEY — Shorter University (Fr., Woodland HS). . . saw action for the Hawks in their 38-14 win over Brevard College. Shorter (1-0) plays at Albany State this Saturday.

TERRY BERDIN — Reinhardt University (Jr., Cartersville HS). . . saw action in the Eagles 35-25 loss at Kennesaw State. Reinhardt (0-1) hosts Warner University in the Eagles’ home opener Saturday.

CHRIS BLACKSTON — University of West Georgia (Sr., Adairsville HS). . . had three solo tackles including one for a loss in the Wolves 45-7 win at Carson-Newman. UWG (1-0) entertains Morehouse College Saturday night.

TREY CREAMER — UNC-Charlotte (R-Sr., Cartersville HS). . . had three solo tackles in the 49ers 31-28 home win over Duke. Charlotte (1-0) hosts Gardner-Webb Saturday night.

JONATHAN CRUZ — UNC-Charlotte (Sr., Cartersville HS). . . made a 32-yard field goal, four PAT kicks, and booted three of six kickoffs as touchbacks in the 49ers win over visiting Duke. Charlotte (1-0) hosts Gardner-Webb Saturday night.


DYLAN FORMAN — Shorter University (R-Fr., Woodland HS). . . saw action in the Hawks 38-14 win over Brevard College. Shorter (1-0) plays at Albany State this Saturday.

JONAH GAMBILL — University of Memphis (R-Fr., Cartersville HS) . . . was listed as a participant in the Tigers’ 42-17 win over visiting Nichols State Saturday. Memphis (1-0) travels to Arkansas State Saturday night. ZAY JACKSON -- Missouri Baptist University (Fr., Cass HS) ... saw playing time on special teams in the Spartans second win of the season Saturday, a 31-7 road victory at Iowa Wesleyan. MBU (2-0) has a bye week before hosting Madonna University Saturday, September 18 at noon.

JaCOREY JOHNS — Wake Forest University (R-So., Cartersville HS) . . . had one quarterback hurry in the Demon Deacons 42-10 win Friday night over Old Dominion. Wake Forest (1-0) has a home game against Norfolk State this Saturday at noon.

MANNY JONES — Colorado State University (Grad Student, Woodland HS) . . . had a pair of solo tackles including one for a five-yard loss but the Rams lost Friday night to South Dakota State, 42-23. Colorado State (0-1) plays at Vanderbilt Saturday night.

BRADLEY KIRK — Shorter University (Sr., Cartersville HS). . . saw action as the Hawks beat Brevard College, 38-14. Shorter (1-0) plays at Albany State this Saturday.

JACOB POTTER — Kennesaw State University (Sr., Adairsville HS) . . . the Owls long snapper for extra points, field goals, and punts saw action in KSU’s 35-25 win over Reinhardt. KSU (1-0) plays at Georgia Tech Saturday at 12 noon.

NICK ROOT — Carson-Newman University (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . the starting center in a 45-7 home loss to West Georgia. The Eagles (0-1) have the weekend off before hosting Wingate on Saturday, September 18.

JOHN SCIFERS — University Incarnate Word (Grad Student, Woodland HS) . . . made both of his PAT kick attempts and had seven kickoffs, three for touchbacks, but the Cardinals lost 44-41 at Youngstown State. Incarnate Word (0-1) hosts Prairie View A&M Saturday night.

COURTNEY SLOCUM — Mars Hill University (Fr., Adairsville HS) . . . saw action in the Lions’ 30-24 overtime loss to Chowan last Thursday. Mars Hill (0-1) hosts Virginia-Lynchburg Thursday night.

EVAN SLOCUM — Wake Forest University (Fr., Cartersville HS) . . . made a solo tackle in the fourth quarter during the Demon Deacons’ 42-10 win last Friday night over Old Dominion. Wake Forest (1-0) entertains Norfolk State Saturday at noon.

MATTHEW SURRETT — Olivet Nazarene University (Fr., Cartersville HS)… the offensive lineman saw action in the Tigers’ 20-17 win Saturday over visiting Siena Heights. ONU (1-0) has a bye week before traveling to Indiana Wesleyan Saturday, September 18. BRANDON WADE -- University of West Florida (R-So., Cartersville HS) ... saw time on the defensive line and was credited with one tackle in the Argonauts' 42-36 win at McNeese State last Saturday. UWF (1-0) hosts Southwest Baptist this Saturday night.

BRYCE WILKINS — Reinhardt University (Jr., Cartersville HS)… a starter on the Eagles’ offensive line as RU lost 35-25 at Kennesaw State. Reinhardt (0-1) hosts Warner University in the Eagles’ home opener Saturday.



CROSS COUNTRY

Parker Breedlove

BILL ARCHER -- University of Montevallo (Fr., Cartersville HS) — Archer placed 75th overall (6th among the Falcons) as Montevallo finished eight out of 20 teams Saturday in the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic.


PARKER BREEDLOVE — Reinhardt University (So., Cartersville HS)… ran fifth for his team and 10th overall in the Battle at Flint Farm hosted by the Eagles last Friday. Reinhardt finished third in the tri-meet behind Tennessee Wesleyan and Brenau. Next for Reinhardt is the North Alabama Showcase September 17 in Huntsville.

McKENNA TRAPHEAGEN -- Georgia Tech (So., Woodland HS) — The two-time individual state champion finished 18th overall out of 87 competitors Friday in the Kennesaw State Opener.



GOLF

Buck Brumlow

BUCK BRUMLOW — University of Georgia (Fr., Cartersville HS)… not only qualified for the Bulldogs’ first tournament of the Fall schedule, but placed 31st individually at The Carmel Cup played on the famed Pebble Beach Golf Links last weekend. Brumlow, who had the fourth lowest total for UGA, shot rounds of 74-73-72 on the 6,828-yard par 72 course. Oklahoma State won the tournament at 18-under-par finishing one shot ahead of rival Oklahoma. Georgia shot a team total of even par and placed sixth of eight teams. Next for the Bulldogs is the Scenic City Collegiate played on The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee.


SOCCER

RUSSELL SHEALY — Syracuse University (R-Jr., Cartersville, GA, Darlington HS)… In three starts as goalkeeper this season, the Maryland transfer has a shutout over Drexel and five cumulative saves in losses at Penn State and at home against Georgetown. The Orange lost at Penn State 3-0 and to Georgetown 1-0. Shealy did not play in a Syracuse 2-0 win over Niagra Sunday night. Syracuse (2-2) travels to Charlottesville to open ACC play Friday night at Virginia.
