NFL
TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL, 2nd-yr. pro; Clemson; Cartersville HS) … completed 25 of 47 pass attempts for 286 yards but did not have a touchdown pass and was picked off twice in a 13-6 home loss to the Houston Texans. The 23-year-old quarterback added 29 yards rushing on four attempts and made one tackle following an interception. The Jags (2-3) play at Indianapolis on Sunday.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
BRYCE BURGESS — Reinhardt University (Sr., Adairsville HS) … had four carries for 16 yards Saturday in the Eagles’ 47-21 win at home over Kentucky Christian. Most of his total came on a 12-yard carry early in the third quarter. Reinhardt (4-1, 1-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference) travels to Bluefield State (WV) Saturday night.
HAYDEN CAGLE — Berry College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … as a starter on the Vikings’ offensive line, Cagle was part of an offense that produced 323 total yards (169 rushing / 154 passing) in a 34-0 conference win over Rhodes College last Saturday night. Berry (3-2, 1-1 Southern Athletic Association) travels to Danville, Kentucky Saturday to play at Centre College.
JONATHAN CRUZ — University of Mississippi (Sr., Cartersville HS) … made a 35-yard field goal and all seven PAT kicks last Saturday in Nashville as the Rebels beat Vanderbilt 52-28. Cruz averaged 63.2 yards on his nine kickoffs with three going for touchbacks. Ole Miss (6-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) hosts Auburn this Saturday.
JORDAN FERGUSON — Middle Tennessee State (Sr., Cartersville HS) … ran his season tackles total to 34 with four more stops Saturday in a 41-14 loss at UAB. Two of the tackles were for losses totaling two yards. Middle Tennessee State (3-3, 0-2 Conference USA) hosts Western Kentucky this Saturday afternoon.
GAVIN GEROS — Shorter University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … the Hawks’ linebacker had four tackles (three solo) in the Hawks’ 35-21 loss last Saturday at Mississippi College. Shorter (2-4, 0-3 Gulf South Conference) entertains West Florida Saturday in another conference matchup.
QUANTE JENNINGS — Presbyterian College (So., Cartersville HS) … saw action Saturday but did not record any stats in a Blue Hose 41-21 home loss to Valparaiso. Presbyterian (1-5, 0-3 Pioneer Football League) heads to the west coast to play at San Diego Saturday.
JaCOREY JOHNS — Wake Forest University (R-Jr., Cartersville HS) … was a starter at defensive end but recorded no stats in a Demon Deacons’ 45-10 victory at home over Army. Wake Forest (5-1, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) has a week off in the schedule to prepare for visiting Boston College October 22.
TITUS JONES — Colorado State University (R-Jr., Woodland HS) … made a solo tackle on the opening kickoff of the second half last Friday night as the Rams won at Nevada 17-14. CSU (1-4, 1-0 Mountain West Conference) hosts Utah State Saturday night.
La’KWAME JUPITER — North Carolina Wesleyan (So., Cartersville HS) … a starter at nose guard, Jupiter had four total tackles (one solo) but the Battling Bishops lost at Belhaven (MS) 24-0. North Carolina Wesleyan (2-4, 2-1 Conference USA South) hosts Methodist University (NC) Saturday night.
ANDREW NGUYEN — Berry College (Fr., Cass HS) … made two tackles and had one pass break up from his defensive back position last Saturday night as the Vikings blanked visiting Rhodes College 34-0. Berry (3-2, 1-1) plays at Centre College (KY) Saturday.
JACOB RAY — Berry College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … had three receptions for 46 yards including a 23-yard catch last Saturday in the Vikings’ 34-0 home win over Rhodes College. Berry (3-2, 1-1) plays at Centre College (KY) Saturday.
EVAN SLOCUM — Wake Forest University (So., Cartersville HS) … the Deacons’ defensive back made three solo tackles last Saturday in a 45-10 home win over Army. Wake Forest has a bye week before entertaining Boston College October 22.
KALEB SPEIGHTS — Shorter University (So., Cass HS) … kicked off four times last Saturday for a 64.5-yard average in the Hawks’ 35-21 loss at Mississippi College. One of his four kickoffs was a touchback. Shorter (2-4, 0-3 Gulf South Conference) hosts West Florida Saturday.
BRANDON WADE — University West Florida (Grad Student, Cartersville HS) … the Argonauts’ defensive lineman made one tackle in a 42-28 win last Saturday at West Georgia. UWF (4-1, 2-1 Gulf South Conference) plays at Shorter on Saturday.
VOLLEYBALL
MARIA PILIPOSYANS - (Fr., Cass HS) … totaled 15 kills, two solo blocks and six assisted blocks in a pair of wins over CIU (3-2) and Columbia (S.C.) (3-0) this past Friday and Saturday. The Lady Eagles (11-10, 9-3) will travel to Tennessee Southern on Tuesday, Oct. 11.
CROSS COUNTRY
BILL ARCHER — University of Montevallo (So., Cartersville HS) … Montevalo’s cross country team finished finished 27th in the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday, Oct. 1 in an event that included many NCAA Div. I runners. Archer finished in 213th place and posted a time of 26:30.7.
SOCCER
ABBIE CRAIG — Reinhardt University (Fr., Cartersville HS)… Abbie Craig played seven minutes in Reinhardt’s 5-0 win over Columbia (SC) on Saturday. She also logged 11 minutes with no statistics in a 4-0 win over Bryan last Wednesday.
BRADY CRAIG -- Reinhardt University (Fr., Cartersville HS) ... a starter as a defender for the Eagles who won twice last week and extended their current streak to 4-0-1. Craig played all 90 minutes of a 1-0 win over Bryan last Wednesday and saw 72 minutes of action and had one assist in a 7-0 win Saturday at Columbia University. Reinhardt (6-4-2, 5-1-2 Appalachian Athletic Conference) plays at Columbia International Wednesday afternoon.
CHLOE RAVISH — Shorter University (Fr., Woodland HS) …Ravish played as a reserve goalkeeper in Shorter’s 10-0 loss to West Florida on Sunday, Oct. 9. She recorded five saves and gave up six goals. Shorter will play at Auburn University Montgomery (Ala.) on Friday, Oct. 14.
RUSSELL SHEALY — Syracuse University (R-Sr., Cartersville resident; Darlington HS) … The starting goalie for Syracuse, Shealy made four saves and gave up two goals in a 2-1 loss to Cornell on Tuesday, Oct. 4. He then earned the shutout in a 2-0 win over Wake Forest last Friday. He made five saves in the win. The Orange also defeated Loyola 6-1 Monday.
