This week’s edition of Athletes Beyond Bartow includes updates on MiLB and NFL pros, plus news from college football, cross country, volleyball, and soccer.
MiLB
MASON BARNETT — Midland RockHounds (3rd-yr. pro; Oakland A’s Double-A affiliate; Texas League; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … earned his eighth pitching victory of the year last Wednesday with a six-inning home start against the Amarillo Sod Poodles. The 23-year-old righty allowed just one earned run on three hits and three walks. He struck out nine. Barnett is now 8-8 in 24 starts and 25 appearances. He has 152 strikeouts in 126 innings with a 4.43 ERA. Midland (80-52 overall) is 40-23 and has clinched the second-half South Division race in the Texas League, earning a post-season berth. The RockHounds have six games this week at the Corpus Christi Hooks to conclude the regular season. They will then begin a best-of-three playoff series on September 17 at home against the Frisco RoughRiders.
LOGAN MARTIN — Columbia Fireflies (2nd-yr. pro; Kansas City Royals Single-A affiliate; Carolina League; Kentucky; Cartersville HS) … made a five-inning home start last Friday against the Charleston RiverDogs and did not receive a decision in an eventual 8-0 win. Martin gave up just two hits and two walks. He struck out three. The 23-year-old completed his second MiLB season with a 4-3 record in 25 appearances (17 starts). He struck out 97 in 102 innings and finished with a 3.62 ERA. Columbia missed the playoffs and finished the year with a 68-62 overall record.
ANTHONY SEIGLER — Somerset Patriots (7th-yr. pro; NY Yankees Double-A affiliate; Eastern League; Cartersville HS) … in seven games last week at the Binghampton Rumble Ponies, he was 6-for-23 at the plate with one home run, one double, four walks, six runs scored, and two RBI. He also stole one base. The 25-year-old second baseman has a .230 batting average in 348 official at-bats for the season. He has 12 homers, 45 RBI, and has swiped 26 bases. The Patriots have won six of their last eight games and trail the Portland Sea Dogs by 1-½ games in the Northeast Division second half race for the Eastern League’s final playoff spot. Somerset (38-24 second half / 70-61 overall) hosts the New Hampshire Fisher Cats for six games this week.
NFL
TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL, 4th-yr. pro; Clemson; Cartersville HS) … completed 12 of 21 passes on Sunday for 162 yards and one touchdown, but the Jaguars lost 20-17 at the Miami Dolphins in the 2024 season opener for both teams. Lawrence also had one rushing attempt for eight yards. His TD pass was a 14-yarder to B Thomas in the second quarter. Jacksonville (0-1) hosts the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
KOLBE BENHAM — Marist College (R-Jr., Cartersville HS) … a starter at safety, Benham made ten total tackles (four solo, six assisted) this past Saturday in a 31-10 home loss to Georgetown. The Red Foxes (0-1) play at Lafayette this Saturday.
HAYDEN CAGLE — Berry College (Sr., Cartersville HS) … the Vikings’ starting center helped lead an offense that produced 317 total yards (165 rushing) in a 43-7 win at Huntingdon College in Montgomery. Division-III, 25th-ranked Berry (1-0) plays its home opener on Saturday against DePauw University.
JONAH GAMBILL — University of Memphis (R-Sr., Cartersville HS) … a starter for the Tigers on the offensive line that helped produce 372 total yards (211 rushing) in a 38-10 home win over Troy. Memphis visits Florida State on Saturday afternoon.
SHADRE HURST — Tulane University (So., Cartersville HS) … started on the Green Wave’s offensive line that helped produce 491 yards of total yards and outgain Kansas State, but the visiting Wildcats won 34-27 on Saturday in New Orleans. 17th-ranked Kansas State outscored Tulane 24-7 in the second half for the comeback victory. Tulane (1-1) heads to Norman to challenge the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday afternoon.
QUANTE JENNINGS — Presbyterian College (Sr., Cartersville HS) … rushed for 43 yards on 11 attempts Saturday in a 31-14 win at Erskine College. The Blue Hose (1-1) host Virginia University-Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon.
TYLER MARTIN — Berry College (Jr., Cass HS) … a starter for the Vikings at offensive tackle, helped Berry’s offense produce 317 total yards (165 rushing) in a 43-7 win at Huntingdon College in Montgomery. The Vikings, ranked No. 25, host DePauw University on Saturday.
JAKE PARKER -- Judson University (So., Cartersville HS) ... the Eagles' starting quarterback was 16-for-27 passing this past Saturday for 236 yards and four touchdowns as Judson edged visiting Madonna, 28-27. He did throw one interception. His TD tosses were from 24-, 71-, 43-, and 3-yards. Judson (1-0) visits Taylor University (IN) on Saturday night.
SAM PHILLIPS — UT-Chattanooga (R-Jr., Cartersville HS) … caught eight passes for 195 yards and one touchdown this past Saturday in a 24-21 loss at Georgia State. His 84-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter gave the Mocs a 21-17 lead. Phillips added one punt return for 15 yards. Chattanooga (0-2) hosts Mercer on Saturday night in the Southern Conference opener for both teams.
DEVONTE ROSS — Troy University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … caught two passes for only four yards this past Saturday in a 38-17 loss at Memphis. The Trojans (0-2) play at the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday afternoon.
STEPHEN ROWSER — Morehouse College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … made one assisted tackle this past Saturday in the Maroon Tigers’ 37-13 home loss to Johnson C. Smith. Morehouse (0-2, 0-1 SIAC) travels to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Saturday to play Howard University in the HBCU New York Football Classic.
EVAN SLOCUM — Wake Forest University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … a starter in the Demon Deacons’ defensive backfield, Slocum made six tackles (four solo), including one tackle for loss in last Saturday’s 31-30 home loss to Virginia. Wake Forest (1-1) hosts Ole Miss this Saturday night.
SACOVIE WHITE — University of Georgia (Fr., Cass HS) … made two receptions this past Saturday for 22 yards in the top-ranked Bulldogs’ 48-3 home win over Tennessee Tech. It was the wide receiver’s college debut. Georgia (2-0) travels to Kentucky for a Southeastern Conference game on Saturday night.

McKINLEY CHAPPELL — Berry College (So., Woodland HS) … ran seventh for the Vikings this past Saturday in the Berry XC Equal Distance Meet at Clara Bowl. His time was 27:31.05. Berry will be back in action on Saturday, September 21, in the Rhodes Invitational in Memphis.
VOLLEYBALL
AILEE ENGLAND — Berry College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … saw action in four sets and had four kills and two digs in home losses this past Friday to Northwestern-St. Paul and Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Vikings (0-5) will host Oglethorpe, Transylvania, Wittenberg, and Piedmont this Friday and Saturday for the Berry Invitational.
MAKAYLA MALONE — Toccoa Falls College (Fr., Excel Christian Academy) … saw action in three matches between August 31 and this past Saturday, totaling 12 digs and three kills as a defensive specialist. The Screaming Eagles (3-4) host Truett-McConnel University on Tuesday, visit Agnes Scott College on Thursday, and host Lancaster Bible and Brevard on Saturday.
MADELYN ORTON — LaGrange College (Jr., Cartersville resident, Cornerstone Prep) … saw action in four sets — two each in a loss to Tennessee Wesleyan and a win over Tuskegee University — and totaled five digs as a defensive specialist. LaGrange (3-1) visits Clark Atlanta University on Wednesday and will travel to Lynchburg, Virginia, for matches against Lynchburg College, William Peace University, Greensboro College, and Randolph College on Friday and Saturday.

ABBEY CRAIG — Reinhardt University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … the Lady Eagles’ forward logged 45 minutes of pitch time this past Saturday in a 9-0 home win over St. Andrews (NC) University. Reinhardt (1-2) hosts Bryan College on Wednesday before traveling to Columbia University (SC) on Saturday.
