This week's update includes contributions made by more than two dozen local athletes for their professional and college teams.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL, 5th-year pro; Clemson; Cartersville HS) … completed 25 of 43 passes for three touchdowns this past Sunday in the Jaguars’ 31-27 loss at the Cincinnati Bengals. He rushed twice for four yards and also threw two interceptions in the loss. Jacksonville (1-1) entertains the Houston Texans on Sunday.
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
MASON BARNETT — Oakland Athletics (Major League Baseball; 4th-year pro; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … received no decision in a 3-⅔ innings start September 10 at home against the Boston Red Sox. The right-handed pitcher allowed three earned runs on seven hits and one walk, striking out four. He is 1-1 at the MLB level with an 8.53 ERA in three starts covering 12-⅔ innings. He has 13 strikeouts. Oakland entered the week with a 70-80 record, trailing Seattle by 12 games in the American League West.
PGA TOUR AMERICAS
BUCK BRUMLOW — (1st year pro; University of Georgia; Cartersville HS) … carded rounds of 72 and 68 (4-under par) but missed the 36-hole cut last week at the ATB Classic held at Northern Bear Golf Club in Alberta, Canada. Brumlow is currently 68th in the Fortinet Cup standings entering this week’s Victoria Open held at Uplands Golf Club in Victoria, British Columbia. The top 120 players are eligible for the Fortinet Cup Championship in Surrey, British Columbia, on September 25-28.
FOOTBALL
JOHNATHAN CLINE — East Tennessee State University (R-So., Cartersville HS) … was part of an offensive line rotation that helped produce 457 total yards of offense during a 35-31 loss this past Saturday at the University of West Georgia. The Buccaneers (1-2) host Elon on Saturday.
CARLOS DEL RIO-WILSON — Marshall University (R-Jr., Cartersville HS) … completed seven of nine passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed 13 times for 58 yards and one touchdown as the Thundering Herd beat visiting Eastern Kentucky 38-7 this past Saturday. Marshall (1-2) visits Middle Tennessee on Saturday night.
MYLES FORRISTALL — Georgia Tech (R-So., Cartersville HS) … saw action on special teams Saturday as the Yellow Jackets stunned visiting Clemson 24-21. Georgia Tech (3-0, 1-0 ACC) , currently ranked No. 18, hosts Temple on Saturday.
DEVIN HENDERSON — Liberty University (R-Fr., Cass HS) … saw action but did not have a stat line from his safety position in the Flames’ 23-13 loss last Saturday at Bowling Green. Liberty (1-2, 0-1 Conference USA) hosts James Madison on Saturday.
KEVIN HENDERSON — University of Findlay (So., Cass HS) … was credited with four total tackles, including three solo this past Saturday in the Oilers’ 7-3 home win over Wayne State (MI). Findlay (2-0) travels to Painesville, Ohio, on Saturday to face Lake Erie College.
SHADRE HURST — Tulane University (R-Jr., Cartersville HS) … was a starter on the Green Wave’s offensive line that helped produce 426 total yards in a 34-27 home win over Duke. Tulane (3-0) plays at Ole Miss on Saturday.
KHRISTIAN LANDO — Jacksonville State University (R-Fr., Cartersville HS) … carried five times for a total of eight yards, including one six-yard run in the Gamecocks’ 41-34 loss at Georgia Southern this past Saturday. Jax State (1-2, 1-0 Conference USA) hosts Murray State on Saturday night.
TYLER MARTIN — Berry College (Sr., Cass HS) … was a starter on the Vikings’ offensive line that helped generate 480 total yards of offense and scored touchdowns on six of its first eight possessions of a 48-0 win at LaGrange College. Berry (2-0) travels to Pittsburgh to play at Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday afternoon.
JAKE PARKER — Cumblerland University (R-Jr., Cartersville HS) … had one, fourth-quarter keeper for two yards in a 55-7 home win for the Phoenix over Ave Maria University this past Saturday. Cumberland (2-1) travels to the University of Pikeville (KY) on Saturday.
SAM PHILLIPS — University of Iowa (R-Jr., Cartersville HS) … had three receptions for 75 yards, including a 45-yarder in a 47-7 home win this past Saturday over UMass. The Hawkeyes return to action Friday night at Rutgers.
DEVONTE ROSS — Penn State University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … had one catch for 12 yards in the Nittany Lions’ 52-6 home win last Saturday over Villanova. Second-ranked Penn State (3-0) has a bye week before hosting Oregon on September 27.
STEPHEN ROWSER — Morehouse College (So., Cartersville HS) … made five total tackles (three solo), including one for a seven-yard loss in a 38-10 loss to Howard University this past Saturday in East Rutherford, New Jersey. He was also credited with one quarterback hurry. The Maroon Tigers (0-2) host Kentucky State University on Saturday in their conference opener.
SACOVIE WHITE-HELTON — University of Georgia (R-Fr., Cass HS) … had one reception for 17 yards and returned one punt 12 yards in the Bulldogs’ 44-41 overtime win this past Saturday over 15th-ranked Tennessee in Knoxville. Fifth-ranked Georgia (3-0, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) has a bye week before hosting 14th-ranked Alabama on September 27.
IAN WILLIAMS -- University of Memphis (Fr., Cass HS) ... saw action in his third straight game for the Tigers and has one tackle on the kickoff coverage team. Memphis (3-0) has started the season with wins over Chattanooga, Georgia State, and Troy. The Tigers visit Arkansas on Saturday.
CROSS COUNTRY
TYLER JONES — University of West Georgia (Jr., Woodland HS) … finished 379th of 460 runners in 28:03 last Friday at the Jacksonville State Southern Showcase 8K. UWG was 31st of 48 participating schools. Next for the Wolves is Twilight at PR’ville in Huntsville on September 26.
DANIELLE THAYER — Augusta University (Jr., Woodland HS) … finished 77th of 228 runners as the Lady Jaguars placed 7th at the Queen City 5K last Friday in Charlotte, North Carolina. Augusta runs next in Milledgeville at the Bobcat Invitational on Friday, September 26.
VOLLEYBALL
AILEE ENGLAND — Berry College (So., Cartersville HS) … totaled nine points with four kills, five aces, and one dig across eight sets played in home wins last Friday and Saturday over LaGrange College, Texas Lutheran, and Emory University. The Vikings (8-1) head to San Antonio, Texas, this weekend to conference matches against Trinity University (TX), Rhodes College (TN), and Centre College (KY).
MADELYN ORTON — LaGrange College (Sr., Cartersville resident, Cornerstone Prep) … the Panthers’ defensive specialist/setter saw action in three sets this past weekend in Rome during losses to Berry, Emory, and Texas Lutheran. She had one ace and one dig. LaGrange (2-10) hosts Point University on Tuesday and plays a tri-match in Jackson, Mississippi, on Saturday against host Belhaven University and LeTourneau University (TX).
MEREDITH ORTON — LaGrange College (Sr., Cartersville resident, Cornerstone Prep) … saw action in five sets across four matches last week and totaled one kill and three digs during losses to Fort Valley State, Berry, Emory, and Texas Lutheran. The Panthers (2-10) host Point University on Tuesday and play a tri-match in Jackson, Mississippi, on Saturday against host Belhaven University and LeTourneau University (TX).
SOCCER
ABBEY CRAIG — Reinhardt University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … started both matches for the Eagles last week and played all 180 minutes of a 1-0 home loss to Dalton State and a 2-2 draw against visiting Milligan University (TN). Reinhardt has road matches on Wednesday at Spartanburg Methodist and Saturday at Bryan College (TN).
LIBBY MORGAN — Shorter University (Fr., Woodland HS) … started at forward in two matches and registered 153 minutes on the pitch last Wednesday (Sept. 10) and Saturday in home losses to Newberry College (2-0) and King University (3-0). The Hawks (1-2, 0-1 Conference Carolinas) visit Erskine College (SC) on Wednesday and Barton College (NC) on Saturday.
MACI NICKLAUS — Truett McConnell University (So., Cartersville HS) … entered as a reserve and logged seven minutes on the pitch last Wednesday (Sept. 10) in a 3-0 win at Columbia College (SC). The Bears (4-0-1, 2-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference) host Tennessee Wesleyan on Wednesday before visiting Union Commonwealth University (KY) on Saturday.
GOLF
ANDREW LUTJENS — Georgia College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … shot 72-77-76 (9-over) and tied for 42nd place (96 players) September 8-9 as the Bobcats placed 8th of 15 teams at the Savannah Lakes Fall Invitational played at the 7,032-yard, par-72 Monticello Golf Club in McCormick, South Carolina. Georgia College plays in the Mizuno Invitational in Gainesville, Georgia, on Monday and Tuesday, September 15-16, and the Hurricane Invitational at Doublegate Country Club in Albany on September 22-23.
CHRISTINA SURCEY — Lipscomb University (So., Cartersville resident, North Cobb Christian School) … shot 81-71-71 (10-over par) and tied for 56th place (108 players) as the Bisons finished 11th of 20 teams at the Golfweek Fall Challenge held at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club September 6-9 in Pawley’s Island, South Carolina. Lipscomb tees it up Friday through Sunday at the Mason Rudolph Championship hosted by Vanderbilt University in Franklin, Tennessee.
BRODY TIDWELL — Georgia State University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … fired rounds of 66-71-71 (8-under par), tied for 11th, and helped the Panthers to an eighth-place finish at the Whirlwind Golf Club Invitational in Chandler, Arizona. Host USC won the tournament. The next event for Georgia State is the Ironwood Collegiate Classic in Greenville, North Carolina, on September 29-30.
TENNIS
SYDNEY COPPOLA — Berry College (Jr., Cass HS) … lost her Line 5 singles match 2-6, 0-6 as the Vikings fell to Wallace State CC last Thursday. Berry will host its Fall Invitational on September 26-28.
