This week’s edition of Athlete’s Beyond Bartow includes updates on more than two dozen pro and collegiate athletes contributing in the NFL, MiLB, and PGA Champions Tour golf, plus collegiate football, soccer, volleyball, cross country, and golf.
TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL; 3rd-yr. pro; QB; Clemson; Cartersville HS) … was 22-for-41 passing Sunday for 216 yards but no touchdowns in the Jaguars 17-9 loss at home to the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs. He had no interceptions although he did lose one fumble. Lawrence rushed for 26 yards on five attempts. Jacksonville (1-1) hosts the Houston Texans on Sunday.
MASON BARNETT — Northwest Arkansas Naturals (KC Royals Double-A affiliate; 2nd-yr. pro; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … closed out his 2023 campaign with a five-inning performance and a pitching win last Thursday as the Naturals beat the visiting Arkansas Travelers 12-3. The right-handed pitcher allowed three earned runs on five hits and two walks while fanning eight. The 22-year-old finished the year with a 6-7 record (2-1 in Double-A). He made 23 starts combined at Quad Cities and Northwest Arkansas and worked 114-⅔ innings. He finished the year with a 3.30 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 137 strikeouts.
ANTHONY SEIGLER — Somerset Patriots (NY Yankees Double-A affiliate; 6th-yr. pro; Cartersville HS) … saw action in three games this past week (two starts) at the New Hampshire Fisher Cats going 2-for-7 at the plate with a home run, two walks, and three runs scored. Seigler, who lost about a month of his 2023 season to injury, finished the regular season with a .166 average, a .333 on-base percentage, five home runs, 27 RBIs, and seven stolen bases in 205 official at-bats. Somerset begins a best-of-three Eastern League playoff series Tuesday night at the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.
PGA CHAMPIONS TOUR
JASON BOHN — PGA Tour Champions (Acworth resident; Cartersville Country Club member) … carded rounds of 69-71-68 (208, 2-under par) this past weekend to finish T46 at the Sanford International at Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The tournament was won by Steve Stricker at 16-under-par.
KOLBE BENHAM — Marist College (R-So., Cartersville HS) … made two tackles in the Red Foxes' 49-21 home loss to Davidson College this past Saturday. Marist (0-2) plays at Valparaiso on Saturday afternoon.
COLLIN FLETCHER — Reinhardt University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … made a pair of receptions for a 28-yard total in the Eagles’ 20-19 loss this past Saturday at the University of Cumberlands (Kentucky). RU (1-2) hosts Georgetown (Kentucky) this Saturday in Waleska.
JONAH GAMBILL — University of Memphis (R-Jr., Cartersville HS) … a starter on the Tigers’ offensive line last Thursday night in a 28-24 home victory over Navy. The Memphis offense produced 408 total yards as the Tigers improved to 3-0. They square off against Missouri this Saturday night in St. Louis.
TYWUN GORDON — College of Sequoias (So., Adairsville HS) … had one tackle in the second quarter from his defensive line position as the Giants beat visiting San Joaquin Delta this past Saturday, 42-7. COS (1-2) visits Shasta CC on Saturday.
SHADRE HURST — Tulane University (So., Cartersville HS) … saw action in the Green Wave’s 21-3 Saturday night win at Southern Miss. Tulane (2-1) hosts Nicholls University this Saturday night in New Orleans.
QUANTE JENNINGS — Presbyterian College (So., Cartersville HS) … had one carry for five yards this past Saturday night in a 23-20 Blue Hose victory at Wofford. Presbyterian (2-1) has a bye week before visiting Butler University on September 30 in Indianapolis.
SAM PHILLIPS — UT-Chattanooga (R-So., Cartersville HS) … had two receptions for 23 yards during a 48-3 home conference win over The Citadel this past Saturday night. The Mocs (2-1, 1-0 Southern Conference) visit Birmingham on Saturday to play at Samford.
DEVONTE ROSS — Troy University (So., Cartersville HS) … caught six passes for 69 yards including a second-quarter 14-yard touchdown pass but the Trojans lost Saturday night to visiting James Madison University, 16-14. Troy (1-2) entertains Western Kentucky on Saturday afternoon.
COURTNEY SLOCUM — Mars Hill University (Sr., Adairsville HS) … had two tackles and broke up one pass this past Saturday as the Lions won their South Atlantic Conference opener at Catawba, 35-20. MHU (2-0, 1-0) hosts Barton College (North Carolina) on Saturday afternoon.
EVAN SLOCUM — Wake Forest University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … made three tackles and had a second-quarter interception that he returned 56 yards as the Demon Deacons outlasted Old Dominion in Norfolk, 27-24. Wake Forest (3-0) hosts Georgia Tech this Saturday night.
ABBEY CRAIG — Reinhardt University (So., Cartersville HS) … was on the pitch for 60 minutes this past Saturday as the Eagles won 3-0 at home over Columbia College. Reinhardt also won at Bryan College earlier in the week improving to 3-4 on the season and 3-0 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. RU hosts Columbia International University on Wednesday night.
BRADY CRAIG — Reinhardt University (So., Cartersville HS) … took four shots on goal in 40 minutes last Wednesday but the Eagles failed to score in a 1-0 loss at Bryan College. He then played all 90 minutes and took one shot Saturday at home during a 2-1 win over Columbia College. Reinhardt (2-2-3, 1-2 AAC) hosts Columbia International University Wednesday night and visits Georgia Gwinnett College this Saturday night.
MADELYN ORTON — LaGrange College (So., Rydal resident, Cornerstone Prep) … a setter and defensive specialist, Orton had one ace and six digs in a five-set loss last Thursday at Pensacola Christian. She then had one kill and three digs in a straight-sets loss at home this past Saturday to Oglethorpe University. The Panthers (1-4) play at Bellhaven (Mississippi) Monday night and will face Berea College (Kentucky) and Wesleyan College on Saturday in Macon.
MEREDITH ORTON — LaGrange College (So., Rydal resident, Cornerstone Prep) … totaled 11 kills, 16 digs, and one block last Thursday in a 3-2 loss at Pensacola Christian. She followed with one kill, five aces, and two digs last Saturday in a straight-sets loss at home to Oglethorpe. The Panthers (1-4) play at Bellhaven (Mississippi) Monday night and will square off with Berea College (Kentucky) and Wesleyan College on Saturday in Macon.
MARIA PILIPOSYANS — Reinhardt University (So., Cass HS) … a starting middle hitter, Piliposyans totaled eight kills and four blocks in a pair of straight sets wins last Friday and Saturday at Bluefield University (Virginia) and Kentucky Christian University. The Eagles (10-2, 3-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference) host conference matches Tuesday night against St. Andrews University (North Carolina) and Saturday with Columbia International University (South Carolina).
BILL ARCHER — University of Montevallo (Jr., Cartersville HS) … finished 13th of 182 runners at the 8K Montevallo Falcon Classic last Friday as his team placed third of 20 teams. The Falcons finished behind winner Alabama-Huntsville and runner-up West Georgia. Archer’s time of 26:12 was the second-best on his team. The next meet for Montevallo is the UAH Invitational on October 7.
RYLEE EVANS — Western Kentucky University (So., Woodland HS) … placed 22nd of 38 runners last Friday evening as the Hilltoppers hosted the WKU 6K Invitational. Evans completed the course at 26:15 and was fourth on her team. Murray State won the meet followed by Western Kentucky, Cumberland (Tenn.), Campbellsville, and Kentucky Wesleyan.
TYLER JONES — Carson Newman University (Fr., Woodland HS) … ran to a 69th place individual finish as the Eagles placed fourth of eight teams last Friday at the University of North Georgia Cross Country Invitational in Oakwood. The meet was won by Catawba followed by UNC Pembroke, and Piedmont. Jones finished the 8K race in 30:17.
DREW THAYER — University of Montevallo (Fr., Woodland HS) … ran sixth for the Falcons last Friday and was 51st overall of 182 runners at the 20-team Montevallo Falcon Classic 8K. Montevallo finished fourth as a team. Thayer completed the course at 27:48. The next meet for Montevallo is the UAH Invitational on October 7.
CHANC WILLIS — Reinhardt University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … fired rounds of 70-70 September 10-11 as the Eagles won the Point University Fall Invitational in Lanett, Alabama at par-72, 6,359-yard Point University Golf Club. Willis had the second lowest score for Reinhardt who defeated runner-up Faulkner for the title. RU plays in the Dalton State Invitational in Palm Harbor, Florida starting on Monday, September 25.
DALTON HENSON — Reinhardt University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … carded rounds of 69-80 September 10-11 to help the Eagles win the Point University Fall Invitational in Lanett, Alabama. RU plays in the Dalton State Invitational in Palm Harbor, Florida starting Monday, September 25.
