Athletes Beyond Bartow: Weekly update on local athletes in the pros and in collegiate athletics




This week's edition of 'Athletes Beyond Bartow' includes updates for locals in pro baseball, pro basketball, college baseball, and college golf.

 



PRO BASEBALL


SAM HOWARD — Toledo Mud Hens (9th-yr. pro; Triple-A Detroit Tigers affiliate; Georgia Southern University; Cartersville HS) … made a pair of scoreless relief appearances last Thursday and Saturday at home against Nashville. The southpaw faced four batters in the top of the ninth Thursday allowing a hit and two walks. He struck out one in a 9-4 win. Saturday, Howard retired the first two outs of the seventh inning in an eventual 5-0 loss. He again faced four batters surrendered one hit and one walk. The 29-year-old now has five appearances for Toledo totaling 3-2/3 innings with a 1.42 ERA. The Mud Hens (24-23) are currently fourth in the International League West Division and play a five game series at the Columbus Clippers Tuesday through Sunday.


CONNOR JUSTUS — Charleston (WV) Dirty Birds (7th-yr. pro; Independent Atlantic League; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS) … in four starts last week, the shortstop was 4-for-16 at the plate with a pair of doubles, a walk, and two runs scored. The Dirty Birds (15-19) are in fourth place in the Atlantic League’s South Division with three game series this week at the High Point Rockers and at the Lexington Legends.


ANTHONY SEIGLER — Hudson Valley Renegades (5th-yr. pro; High Class A New York Yankees affiliate; Cartersville HS) … in four home games last week against the Rome Braves, the switch hitting catcher hit safely in each game going 5-for-16 with a home run, two RBIs, and three walks. His two-run homer in the fourth inning Sunday was the difference in a 2-1 victory. Hudson Valley (20-24) is currently tied for third in the South Atlantic League’s North Division. The Renegades play six games this week at the Aberdeen IronBirds.



COLLEGE BASEBALL


DAVIS WILLIAMS — Birmingham-Southern College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … appeared in both games of the Panthers’ NCAA Division III Super Regional last Friday and Saturday in Birmingham as BSC was swept by Trinity (Texas). The reliever faced five batters and gave up one, unearned run on one hit in a 9-8 loss Friday. He was then tagged with the pitcing loss Saturday in a 14-8 defeat. He entered in the eighth inning with the game tied 8-8 and was touched for a run on two hits. He later surrendered two more runs in the ninth on a hit batsman, a walk, and three hits before being lifted. Williams (5-2) made 24 relief appearances this season with a 3.94 ERA and 7 saves. He fanned 35 in 48 innings pitched. Birmingham-Southern finished the season 41-10.



PRO BASKETBALL



AJ MOSBY — Albany Patroons (4th-yr. pro; The Basketball League, Cartersville HS) … was one of eight Patroons to score in double figures last Friday in a 171-106 win over the Connecticut Cobras. Mosby scored 19 points with six rebounds and six assists. Albany completed the regular season with a 20-3 record and earned a first round bye in the TBL playoffs.




GOLF


BUCK BRUMLOW — University of Georgia (Fr., Cartersville HS) … Georgia made the final 15-team cut and tied for 12th at the NCAA Men’s Division I Golf Championship at the 7,289-yard, par-70 Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Bulldogs failed, however, to reach the final eight teams of match play — missing that cut by 18 shots. Brumlow shot rounds of 76 and 81 in the first 36 holes of the championship, but was scratched from the five-man starting lineup for the final 36 holes of stroke play. Brumlow played 30 competitive rounds for UGA in 2021-22 with his score counting in 22 of those rounds. His scoring average was 72.93 with 14 rounds at par or better with a low round of 66.
