Canes advance to state quarterfinals with Sweet Sixteen win over Northview

Luke Gambill won his Line 2 singles match Thursday in three sets.

The Cartersville boys tennis team swept all three singles lines Thursday at Dellinger Park to defeat Northview 3-2 in the Sweet Sixteen round of the GHSA Class 5A state playoffs.


Luke Kottemann and Jackson Cline at Line 1 and Line 3 singles, respectively, won in straight sets. Kottemann won 6-2, 6-4 and Cline won by a 6-2, 7-5 score.


Luke Gambill won his Line 2 singles match in come-from-behind fashion. After falling 6-1 in the opening set, Gambill captured the next two sets 6-2, 6-2 to secure the Canes third point.


The two Cartersville doubles lines — Nate McDonald/Robert Novak and Banks Wilson/John Paul lost in straight sets. McDonald/Novak fell 6-2, 6-2 on Line 1. Wilson/Paul lost 6-3, 6-1.


Cartersville advances to the state quarterfinal round where they will square off with the Northgate / Coffee winner. The site and date will be determined with the match to be played by April 29.
