Canes and Colonels collect diamond victories
March 6, 2024
Strong pitching was the order of the day on Wednesday at Richard Bell Field as the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes outdueled the Rockmart Yellow Jackets, 2-0.
The Canes’ win snapped a three-game losing skid coming off their trip to the Hoover, Alabama Perfect Game Showdown.
Cartersville scored single runs in the first and fourth innings. Both runs came off the bat of Andrew Purdy. He tripled home a run in the first inning and smacked a solo home run to center field to lead off the fourth.
Canes’ starting pitcher Logan Shrewsbury completed six innings on the mound and picked up the win. He struck out five while scattering six hits and a walk. Purdy was credited with a save by facing the minimum in the seventh inning. He fanned two.
The Cartersville pitching performances spoiled a nice effort by Rockmart’s Hunter Atkins who allowed just two earned runs on five hits. Atkins recorded five strikeouts.
Caleb Daniel had two hits and scored the Canes’ first-inning run. Cole Crawford had the other Cartersville base hit.
Rockmart falls to 6-5 with their loss.
