Canes and Colonels complete series sweeps

Cartersville and Cass baseball finished off region sweeps on Friday with doubleheader wins over Woodland and Southeast Whitfield, respectively.

The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes stayed unbeaten in Region 7-AAAA and completed a series sweep of the Woodland Wildcats by winning both games of a home doubleheader on Friday. The Canes won the two games on Friday, 6-0 and 14-4.


Pitchers Nolan Elrod and Wyatt Earwood combined for a shutout in the first game on Friday. Elrod struck out 10 and scattered three hits and one walk in the first six innings. Earwood struck out one and faced the minimum in the seventh inning.


The Canes’ Logan Buchanan started Game 2, picked up the pitching win, and struck out five in the first three innings. Collier Jordan (1R, 0ER, 1BB, 1K), J.B. Nichols (1ER, 3H, 1BB, 1K), and Cohen Tanner (2ER, 1H, 2BB) each worked one inning for Cartersville on the mound.


Grant Tidwell (5.1 IP, 6R, 5ER, 6H, 5BB, 1K) and Alfredo Romo (0.2 IP, 0R, 1H) pitched in Game 1 for the Wildcats. Zaylen Cochran (1 IP, 6ER, 3H, 3BB), Steven Tumlin (1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H), Blake Forstie (3 IP, 3R, 0ER, 1H, 3BB, 4K), Levi Wheeler (0.0 IP, 4ER, 1H, 2BB), and Kason Miller (0.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1K) shared pitching duties for Woodland in the nightcap.


Brayden Logan led the Cartersville offene in the doubleheader with four hits, including one home run, two doubles, and three RBI. Nolan Elrod (two RBI), Tyler Hickman (two RBI), and Clint Hosea (triple, RBI) each contributed two hits. David Vargas (RBI), Cole Crawford (double, RBI), James Manring, Parker Lively (double, two RBI), Cooper Reynolds (double, two RBI), and Harris Turner each had one hit. Cooper Adams added one RBI.


Jonathan Ryan (triple, double, two RBI) and Preston Sorrells each had two hits on the night for the Wildcats. Grant Tidwell (RBI), Tommy Risner, Kallen Reynolds, Alfredo Romo, and Tucker James each added one hit in the doubleheader.


Cartersville (14-7, 12-0) plays a three-game series with Cedartown next week, including a single road game on Tuesday and a home doubleheader with the Bulldogs on Friday.


Woodland (8-12, 3-9) hosts Hiram on Tuesday, and the Hornets will host a doubleheader on Friday.

The Cass Colonels swept a doubleheader at Southeast Whitfield on Friday night in Dalton behind strong pitching performances from Dustin Wallin in the first game, and a combined no-hitter by Noah Rogers and Andrew Ray in the nightcap.  Cass won both games by identical 12-0 final scores, and swept the week’s three games with the Raiders.


Wallin gave up just two hits and no walks in Friday’s opener. He struck out 13 of 21 Raiders batters faced. In Game 2 on Friday, Rogers struck out four and walked six without a hit in the first four innings. Ray walked one, but picked off the baserunner to retire the only three batters he faced to wrap up the no-hitter.


Maddox Koontz (RBI) and Rogers (double, four RBI) led the Colonels’ offense in the two games with four hits each. Aidan Castaneda and Wallin (three RBI) each finished with three hits. Kasey Jacobs (double, two RBI), Landon Lamb (two RBI), and Landon Farmer (double, RBI) contributed two hits in the doubleheader. Zach Stiles (two RBI) had one hit, and Dawson Warner added one RBI.


The losses dropped Southeast Whitfield to 2-19 overall and 1-11 in Region 7-AAAA.


Cass (7-14, 4-8) hosts Allatoona on Tuesday to begin their next region three-game series. The two teams will play a doubleheader at Allatoona on Friday.
